Let’s hit the Hollywood hills, at least in song. Here’s another song that tells the reality of the failures in the city of dreams. We have to remember that, for every success, there’s a million people who didn’t succeed. So crank up the volume and let’s rock!
Hollywood (Down on Your Luck) - Thin Lizzy
It’s not unique to Hollywood. There are a million songs about failing in country music (as Robbie Fulks put it in the song I can’t mention the title of, “Shook a lot of hands, ate a lot of lunch, wrote a bunch of dumb (butt) songs”). There are a million stories about failing on Broadway. About the only thing you can say about the failures is that we get a lot of great songs (and movies and plays) about them.
Here Thin Lizzy, late in their career, sang of the pitfalls of not being on top. “Nobody gives a damn when you’re down on your luck.” That’s sadly as true in Hollywood, California as it is in Hollywood, South Carolina.
Hollywood (Down on Your Luck)
Written by Phil Lynott and Scott Gorham
Recorded by Thin Lizzy
From Renegade, 1981

Yay! Any Thin Lizzy is good Thin Lizzy, as far as I'm concerned. Maybe I'll pull out my copy of Live and Dangerous today and give it a listen!

I certainly liked them. Very happy that I got to see them live in 1978.

Another way of saying Hollywood is a land of broken dreams.

As is Nashville, New York, and any other center of hopes of stardom.

Although both hubby and I know who Thin Lizzy is, we did not guess them or this song. Hubby said it sounded like kiss.

Thhis was one of their final singles. Obviously it didn’t get a lot of airplay.

Just now
People wonder where I get all these songs from. These are the 99% who aren’t Madonna or U2 or Taylor Swift.

It’s true of the famous and the unknown. Who cares when you’re down? Very sad.
