Hurricane Check In #8

Defuniak Springs, Florida
October 9, 2026 9:41pm CST
The hurricane has been downgraded to a category one or maybe even a tropical storm at this point. At least I think. It has blown through and we have gotten over the worst of it. We might get a little more rain and a little more wind, but for the most part all we’ll have to deal with is the lack of power and any cleanup we have to do tomorrow we do not have power and power company so they wouldn’t be out tonight to fix it or restore it so it’ll be at least tomorrow before power is back on. But we do have a generator going. We have friends that live about 40 miles closer to where it is, and I just saw a picture of a tree that landed on his truck and the camper that they were living in. They are both OK but that is still a pretty big hit to have to take. I will check in again when I can.

Sorry to hear what happened to your friend's truck and camper. Fear of falling trees is the exact reason why I move our vehicles to open fields or parking lots when hurricanes are approaching. I can't move my house, obviously, so I have to make sure I have something still intact if a hurricane ever destroys where I live.

@thislittlepennyearns In that 400 acres of trees, you should create yourself a little clearing where it would be safe from trees falling from any direction.

@moffittjc We were just fine in the last storm. They say there are some intense winds this weekend. But there is also a storm in the gulf. So we will see. Are the Gators going to play better tomorrow?

That's not good news about your friend. I can't imagine how scary that would have been.
