Amanda Young was just 19 when she died from amoebic meningococcal disease. She was an only child who arrived when her parents had given up expecting a child and was the apple of their eye. She did really well at school and was enjoying her studies at university. It was devastating when they lost her, as it would be for any parent. Siince that heart-breaking event, they’ve established the Amanda Young Foundation and have raised thousands of dollars for research by opening their garden to the public each year. A few years ago, they also bought a car for a young man with the disease. He was at the open garden party in a wheelchair. He has lost both legs well above the knee and both arms above the elbows. The gift of a car has been a life-saver for him. The photo is mine taken in the garden yesterday. I’ll write more about it later. Upper left shows one of the ‘rooms’ in the garden, I don’t know the name of the plant in the upper right, lower left are nerines and lower right one of the many roses.

It’s amazing to me how some people can channel their grief into something beautiful.

@judyev Out of heartache comes beauty and generosity, but how awful.

That is so sad about Amanda, I cant imagine what her parents went through. Its really kind that they turned it into something that helps other people, and the car for that young man is such a lovely thing to do. The garden looks beautiful too, those nerines are gorgeous.

What a lovely way to honor the life of someone who was so loved, but oh, that has to be hard, too.
