In the winter of 1969 I was 18 and had gone across town to stay with my aunt. She was home after a automobile accident she was in. Her, my uncle and a friend of the family that was paralyzed on one side of his body had been riding in a truck just driving on Hiway 55 when the truck's axle broke and they went into the reservoir at Lucky Peak. My uncle drowned trying to help his paralyzed friend and my aunt had injured her legs badly climbing up a 100-foot bank out of the reservoir.
So I had gone over to help my aunt with her two kids and getting around after such a traumatizing experience.
I had made friends with the two young girls next door and one day they came over to ask me if I would help them bake a spice cake for their mother whose birthday it was that day.
First thing I did was gather all the needed ingredients. I found that all the ingredients were available but one of the spices was not in ground form. I knew I could grind it well but worried that it might make it taste funny or be a weird consistency. It's best we could do so I showed them how to grind the nuts, and we just had to hope it would be okay.
I was happy to see how well it came out and their mother was surprised and it was a nice celebration with the spice cake and some homemade gifts. A fun time was had by all.
