Let's Talk Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

I used to be 'the' pickest eater in the world. My parents were always complaining, and my husband's family couldn't understand. Actually very few could. But over the past couple of decades (I love being old enough to talk about my life in decades ) I have been enjoying fresh fruit and vegetables. For the vegetables, most of them I still preferred steamed or baked. But I also enjoy a cold salad, but with very limited items in it. I absolutely love baked squash. We picked up a few butternut squash this morning out at the farmer's market. I will bake them tomorrow morning when its cool, and after I cut them into squares, I will freeze them. There is nothing better in my mind than freshly baked squash in the dead of winter. We also picked up a couple of very large bags of apples. I prefer golden delicious, and I always count them when I take them out to wash them. My bag held 23 of them, all good sized. My husband got his large sized apples, they are a premium apple, so we get him seconds. Even with seconds his bag, which is full of very large apples, held 5 less than my bag did. At least 1 apple a day is what we enjoy around here. I also like some fresh blueberries or raspberries on my cereal in the mornings. And what do you get a craving for when it comes from the garden or orchard? ~Photo is mine of a haul after a trip to the market last summer

@juliaacv Nothing can beat fresh produce. I too was a very picky eater as a child. Very picky. And during my childhood we lived in such a remote place that supermarket shop was done twice I year, so we grew our own veg, hens, ducks and eggs. At this time of year I love buying up a bunch of apples to make apple crumble or just to stew them down and feed myself on them.

I grew up on a family farm quite a way from the nearest town. There were several times when my mother took me to the doctor worried that I wasn't eating. I would drink alot of milk, and not eat things that I didn't like. The doctor did not seem concerned until I was hospitalized in my teens for severe anemia.

@Juliaacv Oh dear. I never got sick from being picky. I’ll eat anything now except rice pudding and porridge.

Good for you for expanding your palate. I find it absurd when adults won't eat fruit/vegetables.

Thanks, you know, I still cannot eat from a veggie tray, I only like the cucumbers, but I continue to try to eat broccoli, I just need it slightly steamed.

I’ve written about these before: Bixby tomatoes. Grown by a family in Bixby, Oklahoma, where my late grandparents used to live. They had a roadside stand, and every year, my mom would go with my grandmother, and they would stock up on them. They were the freshest and best tasting tomatoes by far. My dad raved about them, and he’s not particularly fond of any vegetables other than beans. Of course, a tomato is a fruit, but you get my point.

We had tomatoes everywhere in the kitchen when I was growing up because Dad grew them for Campbell's soup. But even stewed, I would not eat them until probably 25 years ago. I am learning from my mistakes in my food choices.

I basically like all fruits and vegetables..although some I enjoy more than others. I absolutely love butternut squash and corn. Fruits pears and peaches. I was never a picky eater..very few things I don't like.

I do love squash, but I like steamed cauliflower and broccoli more than I do corn. I love corn on the cob when it comes into season, but after that it is further down on my list of favorites. Apples I love fresh over baked.

@wolfgirl569 They don't ship them in anymore because they would rot on the shelves. Most of us boycotted stuff from the US, so the stores all got the message, and you cannot buy them, unless you want to buy them from Mexico and they are expensive.

hmm...baked squash in the middle of winter sounds so good, I never thought about freezing it like that. 23 golden delicious in one bag is a great haul too. For me it's fresh tomatoes straight from the garden, nothing in the store comes close.

My bag of apples always has more than his does. I grew up on a family farm and my Dad grew tomatoes, so there was always tomatoes everywhere you looked during the season. As a result I never liked them. But I will eat them cold on bruschetta, which is a start.

I've never been one for canned vegetables, but frozen, out of necessity, those I am familiar with.

Fresh plums are the food of the gods and nothing like those horrid things you get in supermarkets!
