Combating trafficking of young girls in Nepal

We attended a talk at the clubhouse today given by a representative of ‘Every Daughter Matters’, a not-for-profit registered charity which aims to intercept young girls who are being trafficked from Nepal to India. The girls are lured by offers of employment or marriage but once across the border mostly find themselves in brothels. Some become forced labour in construction or sweatshops, others are tricked into sham marriages and some are harvested for their organs, in particular kidneys. Between 100-150 girls are intercepted each month and taken to safe houses before being returned home. Some learn hospitality or sewing skills while others become paid employees of the organisation. It was a sobering event and we could only admire the work that the charity does. We were all able to contribute something towards their funds. The photo was taken at the Rose Show and the class was entitled Portrait of a Rose. Aren't they beautiful?
