Well This Was Surprising!

Last weekend when my daughter and I went to Disney World for the final culmination of her birthday celebrations, we stayed at the Coronado Springs Resort, a massive Disney resort complex on the southwestern side of the Disney property. The resort backs up to protected conservation lands that are mostly wetland habitat, but also contains some dense upland forest. For reference, of all the land that Disney owns at Walt Disney World, only about 25% is currently developed; 25% is for future development; and about 50% is for conservation. So there is a lot of natural undeveloped land. The Coronado Springs Resort has a 13-story tower, as well as many outlying hotel buildings. There is also a large convention center on the property, so most of the time the outlying hotel buildings are where convention guests stay, while the tower is where theme park guests normally stay. There was no convention in town this particular weekend, so Disney was offering some great discounts to stay in the outlying hotel buildings versus being in the tower. So, we ended up in one of the buildings in the back of the property. On the morning of checkout, when I was loading our bags into the car, I glanced across the small pond that separated our building from the wetland conservation area, and lo and behold a cougar was leisurely strolling along! I have never seen a cougar in Florida before, although experts say they do still exist in small numbers, so I was not sure if my eyes were deceiving me! But there it was! I knew it was a cougar versus a bobcat for a couple of reasons. One, it was too large to be a bobcat. Second, bobcats have pointy ears and nubs for a tail. Although it's hard to tell in the photo, this cat had a full length tail and rounded ears. I just couldn't believe my luck, being in the right place at the right time! I'm still giddy with excitement while writing this discussion a couple of days later! Of all the years I've camped and backpacked and explored the wildernesses of Florida, I have never come across a cougar before. And yet, here in the middle of the world's largest theme park, I spot a cougar just casually strolling along. Have you ever encountered wildlife in a place you least expected it?

That is amazing, you were in the right place at the right time. Now stay out of the way of those huge snakes you have living down there, and if you see one, please don't take a photo of it. Besides deer, which in a city the size of ours is crazy in itself, we do not see much else.

@moffittjc We actually have a few blue heron living in the shallow areas of the Thames River and in some of the conservation areas in the city-forgot about those.

@Juliaacv I didn't think blue heron lived that far north! When I lived in south Florida, they were everywhere. There's even a major highway named Blue Heron Boulevard!

Luckily, I live too far north of where those big snakes live. But I keep reading that they are slowly adapting to the climate and slowly moving northward out of the Everglades. I don't look forward to that day when they end up in north Florida where I live. We surprisingly have a lot of deer in our urban areas as well. I guess they are just getting more acclimated to people as their natural habitat continues to slowly disappear.

@RasmaSandra You just about gave me a heart attack there! I don't do frogs very well. Even looking at the photo scares me into thinking it's going to jump out at me!

Wow, that is cool. There was one time when two Canadian Geese landed in our backyard and sat there for a few minutes. I was shocked to see them. I took a picture through the window. That was years ago, I would have to hunt through my pictures to find it.

@moffittjc No, I was afraid if I did go out to see them up close, they would fly away and I would miss taking any kind of picture of them.

Canadian Geese are beautiful, until you get too close to them; then they become mean little bass-turds! I hope you didn't try to go outside to get closer to them!

That must have been scary! We have pythons (an invasive species to Florida) that are taking over our local ecosystems. I can't believe how big those snakes get!

@nawala123 You are correct, there are no predators to stop the pythons here.

@moffittjc i read they are burmese phyton and they breed so fast in Florida because no predator to control them naturally. We have some issue too about snakes like cobra and phyton entering residential area for hunting prey

I will not say totally unexpected, as we have wildlife everywhere here. Hubby was doing crop inspections and was stalked by a cougar/wildcat/mountain lion . . . although they supposedly do not live in this state, but the farmer confirmed it. I have had coyote, fox, snakes, possums, armadillo, squirrels, cotton tail bunnies, raccoons, deer, both doe and buck in my yard. Plus birds of course. However, your sighting and image are fantastic. You can tell the ears are rounded in the picture.

I guess a coyote ran by me when I least expected it, where I didn’t anticipate it, but that’s not a cougar! A cougar is much cooler!

@moffittjc The cougar was not hurting anything and an idiot got out of his car and started to chase it. Which scared the cougar and it turned around and went back up on the mountains.

I’m pretty sure you wouldn’t want a cougar showing up at your place. Your barn kitties might not be able to put up a good fight. Lol

That's amazing! I would have been giddy with excitement too. I remember reading Zane Grey's The Lion Hunter where they'd tree cougars with dogs then climb the trees and rope/capture the cougars to relocate them. There are photos of the cougars chained to trees in their camp. I still have the book.
