Yesterday was report card day for the girls. Yes, I realize it is only JK, but you've got to start somewhere. It was interesting to what the teacher had to say about each of the girls. Willow really struggled and disliked school during the first month. She wanted to be anywhere but school, she wanted to be at home. Things have changed. She received alot of praise for her confidence. She even mentioned at the Thanksgiving service that she was thankful for Grandpa and Nanny--yeah that's me! Harper is doing well in her Mathematics. Who knew that they even worked on such skills at such a young age. She does however, have to work on her printing. She is getting a bit lazy I believe as she either just puts an H for her name or she spells it Harpr. Basically like it sounds, but she knows how to spell it. I gave them each a kindergarten printing skills workbook tonight. They have Paw Patrol characters on them, which is pretty important in their eyes, so I know that they will work on them. How old were you when you were writing your own name independently or recognizing and being thankful for your grandparents?

Dad had to move us around from the time I was 4 about every 3 years so mostly I just remember the hassles mom had to go through with first packing us up then unpacking then doing all that again. I don't remember much about my early school years

She must have been a really strong woman. Moving is such hard work.

I only watched her @Juliaacv I only remember how frustrated she was doing all that and raising me and my sibling who is 3 and a half years younger than I am. I'm sure it was a tremendous strain on her.

I do remember learning my letters and numbers, and from there phonics in first grade. But honestly addition and subtraction were easy, we had laying hens and my Grandpa would get me to help him when he cleaned the eggs by putting them onto the flats. I would have to put 6 here and then move some of them to another row, and that seemed easy to learn. I don't remember 'working' until grade 3 when they taught us multiplication. Today they probably teach that much earlier.

@wolfgirl569 The teachers seemed to have me pegged as a good reader with a high level of comprehension. I always liked reading. Our son was the same, he had a high level of comprehension and read by the time he was a month or so older than the girls are. But I worked one-on-one with him every single day from the time he was about two and a half until he read, and then I continued with reading more advanced books and with him.

@Juliaacv I know Adeline started reading in kindergarten. I was like you. Numbers and letters. Most of the writing was our name

You're actually the only person on here that I know that tells me that they did not attend kindergarten. I learned how to print my own name once I was in grade 1. The poor twins, our last name is 10 letters long, they haven't learned that yet. My DIL's maiden name was even longer, and she joked when she was pregnant that she wanted to give the babies hyphenated last names, and I didn't dare want to edge her on.

@Juliaacv I used to have a roomie here who had a long polish name. I always wondered how he ever learned to spell that when he was little...It seemed like it had every letter in the alphabet in it..

@snowy22315 Yep, that is my DIL, Polish and so many letters in it. And truth be told, I still cannot pronounce it. Even Bubcha, that is the name for grandmother, I always manage to say that incorrectly.

I can't remember when I could first write my name. I always liked math and music, though. I started Horse Jr. on math pretty early.

I started to school in grade 1 as there was no kindergarten for the rural country school houses. I learnt everything from then and did alright.

My paternal grandmother worked with my sister and I on learning before we went to kindergarten. I do remember I knew the alphabet, how to write my own name, and some basic number skills. But she was relentless, she didn't want us to be behind in any way. Kindergarten was not really popular when I was really little. There were not many of them, I was sent to a Catholic school kindergarten that was very strict and they required a lot of learning. It sounds like Harper and Willow are doing wonderfully well!

Thank you, they have been spending a few hours 5 days a week at the playgroup, where they worked on both fine as well as gross motor skills. They were ready for a challenge as far as formal learning was concerned. It is just JK, but it is the foundation of their formal education.
