Which languages do you speak?

Languages are a primary interest of mine, so I was wondering what languages people here speak? And with what level of proficiency? Myself, my native language is English. I speak French well enough to get by, though I wouldn't say fluently at all. My Spanish and American Sign Language are conversational. I have learned a little bit of Esperanto, Mandarin, and Arabic, among others, but definitely cannot converse in them.

I love language. I used to be more passionate about it - but now I don't have very much time. I do try to remember words or phrases when I do hear them. My native langauge is English. I can speak some French, Spanish, Italian, and German. I know enough ASL to get by. I have learned words and phrases in Russian, Turkish, Chinese, and Vietnemese but not enough to carry on a conversation. I plan to become fluent in Italian in the next two years. Did you know there is a school in Colorado that focuses only on languages and teaches you how to break them down so that once you learn one you can pretty much learn them all? Someone told me about it before- but I don't know the name of the school.

This user does not understand english or understands it with great difficulty. I really want to learn Irish, German, and French. But I doubt I'll ever be able to completely immerse myself in anything other than French which is somewhat discouraging.

My native language is Afrikaans. English was compulsory in our schools. I understand German to an extent, I used to work for a company with many Germans - you learn as you go. Other than that, only the odd word here and there. I still want be make the effort and learn a third language, preferably an African language, as I am a Namibian.

I don't know very much about Afrikaans, but I have heard from people that it's absolutely beautiful. They offer it as a language taught at my college, so perhaps someday I'll take a class in it :)

My first language is english and I'm currently in French in college, I took 3 years in HS so I know quite a bit already but I'm not confident enough to try to have a conversation yet. I'm applying to get my daughter in the French Emmersion program here, I really hope she gets in because I think it would be wonderful for her :)

Bon courage pour vos classes français :) I hope your daughter gets in, too. As I said a few posts up, immersion is an amazing experience for young people to have.

Besides English, I also speak a bit of Russian and fluently understand it. However, I cannot read or write it even thougth I did once learn how. I also did learn a bit of hebrew, including reading and writing, but most of it has been forgotten since I don't really have a chance to use it. I did take spanish in school and university and still understand a good amount. However, I'm not really proficient in speaking it.

My high school started a brand new Russian class this year, and I can't even fathom how difficult it must be to learn to read and write for people familiar with the Latin alphabet. However, I have heard it spoken by the teacher, and it sounds beautiful. I'm a little regretful that I didn't sign up for the class.

The only language I know is English . I put my children in the french emersion program when they started school , so they would have more advantages in life then myself and they also say the younger you are the easier it is to pick up on new languages .

I've heard that immersion programs from a young age are absolutely the best way to go regarding language learning. Big props to you for giving your children that excellent opportunity!

Hi Faerieingrey, compliments for all the languages you know.... you are really a fairy!!!! I'm Italian, so my native language is Italian, I speak English a little and I studied French alone. I love French culture, so I bought some grammar books and I started to learn it. When I have time I like doing exercises of Latin and I'd like to learn Ancient Greek in future, to me my roots are Roman-Greek and so I'd like to speak these languages too.

I really wish I spoke more languages! I speak English, but really, the extent of my foreign lanuage skills is being able to say "hello," "goodbye," "please," and "thank you" in Hebrew, Arabic, Italian, German, French, and Spanish. I want to learn more, because I would really like to travel abroad and be able to converse with the locals and not seem like a dumb tourist.

My native language is English, but I also speak Spanish. I used to speak some Hebrew as well. This fall I'm going to either re-learn Hebrew or learn Arabic.

My native language is English. I could probably get by speaking French too (thanks to taking six years of it in school). I understand quite a bit of Vietnamese too. My mom is from Vietnam.. she and my grandmother used to speak Vietnamese in the house.
