Would you give someone a negative if you don't agree?

I am just so surprised on here. First I must say that I saw one poster on here say if he doesn't agree with someone or they only write one sentence then he gives the writer a negative -. I was in shock. I have seen so may posts on here that I don't agree with and I respect the posters opinion and even give a positive +. I believe if someone doesn't agree then don't give anything, right? Or if it is a vulgar or nasty post then report it by clicking on the exclamation mark!.
So, what do you all think? Do you give a negative if you don't agree with the poster? Do you give negatives for short answers? Anyone that answers with a thoughtful and good answer will earn a positive (+). Thank you for reading. Have a nice day.

I don't negative rate for those that don't agree with me - more often than not they get a postive as they are able to explain their reasons well and while they might not change my personal point of view on whatever the subject is - at least they usually give me something to think about.
I will however negative rate those that just post a one line answer for the sake of posting something, post spam or a totally off topic response - or those that are excessively rude or nasty etc in their replies.
But this is a discussion site - so it's only natural there are going to be opposing view points - it's what makes it a good discussion after all - it's be no fun if we all agreed :-)

Yes, you are right. If I think the person said something very rude or I don't agree I don't rate his/her comments at all. I am glad that we all think in different ways because we can learn from each other.

I could not agree with you more re08dz. A good dicussion repersents both the negative and postive views on that subject.
Deversity is what makes life interesting. If we all viewed a subject in the same way what a boring world this would be.
Our right to disagree with the opinion of another is a freedom we all cherish. So lets respect this right and not give someone a negative just because we disagree with them.

no, i never give negative rating.
i respect others opinion, right or wrong that's theirs.
iw ant to make friends here not enemies.
i guess we have to create a friendly environment here in mylot, to have a smooth and good discussion.

Could you imagine how boring this site would be if everyone agreed with everyone? There would be no point of discussions because we would all be following the 'sheep syndrome' If someone disagrees with me then it opens up a 'great' discussion and I take on board their points and appreciate they have their own point of view, I would never ever (-) because of that. I find that terrible people can do this? The fact that they have bothered to reply. I will endeavour to give a (+) but only on good, informative responses.

I think this is a really good comment. I try to find reasons to give the + rating. Our diversity is part of what I love about being able to post here.

Wolfie, thank you for your words. Well I do think the plus is intended for the better posts. Sometimes I wonder why people do what they do ;). Yes, I wouldn't give a negative either for something I didn't agree. Have a nice day and god bless.

I do not believe in giving negatives unless it was downright way off topic. For instance the topic is about Making money and someone posts facts about fish. That would result in a negative.
I actually encourage people not to agree with me as I then get to learn their side of the story.

I will never give negative just because I don't agree with someone. But I may give negative if someone is trying to be rude, or trying to insult the one who started the discussion or use vulgar language. For all decent people I have been giving positive (+) all the time, as they deserve it. Till today I did not come across anyone for whom I had to give negative (-) and I hope I will never have to do that.
How can we see who gave us + and who gave us -. where to look.

The reason I know because the person posted his discussion and I posted my answer then I looked back at his thread later--he replied to the poster and said basically "I'm giving you a negative because I don't agree." and he continued to say that "I give negatives if I don't agree or if people post one liners". I was shocked and since my opinion didn't match his I am sure he gave me a negative, too. Therefore I won't be posting in anymore of his discussions :S.

That is terrible...aren't we here to give our opinions and talk with others? Not to be rude and all if we don't agree with them. I don't give negatives if I don't agree with someone. They are willing to post a comment I will read it and if it is rude or whatever I won't rate it at all, but if it is good and nnormal I give them a positive.

Thank you for your comments. I have to agree with you, I am just so surprised that someone would do that. I can understand how some people can think differently, but since we are here to discuss it is going to be obvious that not everyone will agree, right?

I just wanted to add from the myLot Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):
What if I disagree with someone? Should I give that post a negative rating?
Absolutely not! In fact, if you disagree with a post, but still feel it positively contributes to the discussion, you should rate it positively. Rating quality content negatively will hurt your ratings overall. Remember differing opinions and viewpoints tend to make for the most interesting discussions.

i dont agree with giving anyone a negative because i believe everyone is entitled to their own opion whether it is a short or long responce it doesn't matter.it does not matter if i don't agree with the responce because everyone has their own thoughts and opions about things.i think if you dont agree with a respnce then do not rate it because i dont think my lot should be judging people for their opions or responces we are here for discussions not to be judged.

I could never understand why some give negatives just for opinions they don't agree with. That seems petty and childish to me. This is a place to discuss and express our opinions. Now I will give a negative if it's a one word type reply or something that breaks with the quidelines. If it's really off topic, gibberish, foreign language type things I'll report it. Other then that if I like the post, whether I agree or not, I'll give a positive. Now if I don't like the post I might not rate it at all but I won't give it a negative.

I didn't know we weren't allowed to post things in other languages? There has been some threads to speak in Italian and such and I responded in Italian as I learnt it at the university. Thank you for your post and a big positive for you :)

The only time I give a negative is if someone gives a short one or two word answer or if they have responded and have obviously not read the entire post. I don't mind if people disagree with my opinions at all.

I never rate down people just a matter I disagree.
Usually rate down people if their answer is not related with the question, or just Yes/No answer.
And I rate up people who answers exactly related to the question, not too long. Short is ok, as long as the answer is clear.

its amazing for me that someone can think in this way.this website is based on personal opinions and thoughts.u can say or express opinion without someone's liking/disliking's concern.

No way! I've never given someone a negative yet. I'm a pretty open minded person, and respectful of the views of others - but I'm also not afraid to call someone out if I think they are trying to cheat on mylot, or are just being plain stupid. What can I say? I speak my mind.
I don't give negative marks out. I wouldn't like someone to give me one for something I said that they didn't agree with - why would I do it to someone else?

"You don't agree with me. You fail as a person. I'm marking you negative?"
Screw that. Part of what makes a community a community is people that have differing views on different subjects.
what a boring place the world would be if we all agreed.

I would not be giving a "Negative Rating" to a topic or a response that I dont agree with. That is not the way around in here. You are not a judje here. You are here to voice your thoughts.
I have seen my rating drop from 87/100 to 86/100. I am here not for money, but for the fun and satisfaction that Mylot gives me. I know giving a negative can bring down the "Rating" of a Mylotter and this would also affect his/her earning potential here.
But, If I see a message that is being abusive or something that is anti for the good of Mylot, I would defiantly "Report" it as an "Abuse".

Everyone has their own opinion and I firmly respect that. If someone has the wrong opinion, I won't rate them negatively about it...however, if someone made some kind of rude, mean comment, or something offensive that doesn't pertain to their opinion, I give them a negative rating.

Although I don't agree with it, I know that alot of people do it, I personally don't. I think that the + & - should be used for rating quality not opinion. We are entitled to have our own opinions. However I will give a - if the response to the discussion does not have anything to do with the topic or is of no quality, like yes or no responses on a discussion that requires more of a response.

this is a forum so anyone can rate anybody's posts with a negative or positive rating. anyway, for me, i don't usually give negative ratings not unless that discussion is very bias, judgmental, intolerable, racist and very offensive. i usually give a positive rating especially when a comment or a discussion sounds good for me because not everybody can appreciate somebody's post or comment.
