This topic came on Dr. Phil today making me think about it. Would you tell a waitress that she gave you too much money back, say she gave you a $20 when she was supposed to give you $10?? How honest are you?? If I notice, I always give the money back, most of the time it is me giving them more money and them not giving me enough money in return, don't you hate that?? Please share your thoughts ....

I personally have always given the money back, except one time a few months ago, and i let my temper get the best of me there. The woman forgot to scan an item and the whole time i was there she was really horrible to all the customers, including myself. I told her that she didn't have to take her temper out on the customers when they aren't the reason she was having such a bad day (Or life) and that one day her attitude was going to get her fired. She was constantly spewing at the mouth, calling down customers, giving odd eyes, and all that, so when she forgot to scan the item, i was like whatever, and then she gave me more money back in her rant i guess, and i said fine, this can come out of her pocket, because no one treats their customers like that.. I don't know why but i never felt bad for it, but there have been times when i got more back than i should have and went back to the store just to give it back, a good worker shouldn't have to have anything paid out of their pockets.

Well hopefully she is not still working there, I have had that happen when I was raising my children and would have alot of groceries and they would always forget to scan the items in the bottom of the basket and sometimes I would get home and see that they had not been scanned. Nowdays, I watch it and make sure they get everything from the basket.

I've done this on a number of occassions. Waiters/waitresses depend heavily on tips and if they give back to much money and there is a shortage on their cashout, then that money comes out of their earnings. Not only that, it's just the right thing to do regardless of the situation.

Yes I would, absolutely. Because of tips, waitresses are usually dealing in cash. They only reconcile with the till about once a night. If she comes up short, there's a good chance that money is coming straight out of her pocket. To take that money is theft from someone who can probably ill-afford it.

Yes, I have actually had this happen and I informed the waitress.

I always make sure I give the money back. I feel they work hard enough and sometimes mistakes happen. Why should they pay if they have made an honest mistake.

Once I went back to tell a shop they'd given me £10 too much in change. They insisted they'd given me the right money, but I was worried so I had to wait while they checked. I felt like a right fool when we realised I HAD given them a £20 and the change was right. At least I was being honest!

I have returned money, even down to returning a nickel at a dairy store, with my son, to make the point, when he was little. It was a lesson in counting change, which he was learning in school, and a lesson in honesty, which I was hoping he was learning everywhere. I think honesty is the best policy in big and little things alike. You can set an example by being honest yourself.

I saw that too and if I caught it I wouldn't hesitate to give it back right away. As I sat and watched that, I wondered if it had ever happened to me. I always have my kids with me when I go out and I'm always stressed and in a rush. Unless it was a ridiculously blatant mistake like a $20 bill back instead of a $1 bill, I probably wouldn't catch it! On the flip side I know I should pay more attention because the opposite could happen just as easily but I really don't care. I hope I've never accepted too much change before!

I missed his show today on ethics. I wanted to see it. Actually I think it airs again here in 15 minutes so I might run up to watch it. I would definitely tell the waitress and I'm not just saying that. I have in many cases done that and everytime they are so surprised. I have had cashiers give me too much money back. I tell them too because it has to come out of their pocket at the end of the night if they are short cash. I would like to think most people would do the right thing.

I would tell her she gave me to much money. I recently purchase an item at a store, and I place the money in my pocket not counting it bad mistake. I should of gotten back $2.00, but when I check I had $12.00. I called the store and took it back to the cashier. I would not feel right knowing I took money from someone. I would feel like a stole it.

Whenever we get the bill at a restaurant, I made it a habit to check if what's listed is really what we ordered. Sometimes they put in an additional meal or sometimes they forget to put something that we ordered. Either way I tell them right away. I question the initials if I don't understand. Yes I would definitely give back any excess of change. At the end of the day, the waitress who made the booboo might get fired or somethign that she would have to pay for it from her own pocket and that sucks coz waitering job doesn't pay that much. In fact they are usually dependent on tips.

We got a whole free meal once at Marie Callanders because they first took too long with the meal (we think they dropped it on the way out of the kitchen because we heard a loud crash.) Then they gave us a WAY WRONG ticket - we suspected we knew who's ticket it was & hoped they didn't pay for ours!!! Even took home 3 pies which was the only thing on the ticket that was correct! We were a party of about 8 or 10 - we left the gal a BIG tip.

Yes I would, and I have done so a couple of times I can think of. These people work for practically nothing, and deal with difficult and abusive people on a regular basis-- yet are expected to remain cheerful through it all. Most likely, when there's a shortage, it'll come out of their pay, in the end. And yes, I have also been shorted a couple of times, but have managed to get things set straight without too much trouble.

It's happened to me a few times. I always tell a waitress if she gave me the wrong change. If she's a bad waitress, I'll show it by giving a bad tip, not by stealing.

Yes I would tell the waitress. I try to be honest. I don't try to be, I am honest. I have told a person several times that they gave me to much money. +

Ok.,.Im gonna be totally honest with you..If the waitress was mean,rude..and the service was totally bad..Iwould keep the money and not feel bad what so ever about it..I know it sounds immature..but i dont care lol..But if he or she was a great server..I would without a doubt tell them they made a mistake and give back the money..

If i noticed that what was given back to me was more than what it should be, i will give it back. Restaurant staff makes this mistake sometimes especially if they are dealing with a lot of customers and i don't want to take advantage & burden them by spilling their hard-earned money. It's my common practice to give tip especially if the service is good rather than to get something from them out of their honest mistake.

Yes, I would give it back. Did you know that if a waitress or waiter gives back too much change that it will come out of their pay? And most of the time it isn't even their fault. They only return the amount that the cashier gives them when they pay for you. They expect the waitress/waiter to count it before they return it to you. I would think it would come from the cashiers pay , but not so. The little man is always responsible and makes the less. Even with tips they barley make minimum wage. Honesty is the best policy.

Yes. I always return extra change. I don't want the employee to get in trouble for being short of money.

To me I would give the change back because it is similiar to stealing and I do not want her to lose her job because she came up $10.00 short. But that would depend on if she was nice I would give it back and if she was mean then I would keep it. I would also give her a bigger tip next time that i went to eat there.
