Discussion of Glade Plug In Air Freshener Warning.

Glade Plug Ins - hoax
United States
April 2, 2007 7:00pm CST
A few days ago someone posted a well meaning warning about Glade Plug In Fresheners being a fire hazard. I responded to the discussion and said that I used them all the time in every room of my home but I was going to throw them all out. This I did and they were expensive. Just an hour or so ago I was telling my friend about and she said she didn't believe it so we googled it. Well she was right. It was a HOAX and it quotes the exact same email of warning that was in the discussion. So one again I fell for believing something I read and throwing out about 6 double plug ins and four boxes of refills. Did anyone else get caught in the Hoax?Full Story http://www.hoax-slayer.com/glade-plug-in-fire.html Photo Glade Plug Ins

I was getting really worried as I was reading your discussion because I also use Glade Fresheners. I was also about to go around the house unplugging them and then I decided I would do it after I read the remainder of your post. I am glad now that I did, because I would have done like you and thrown them our. I can't understand why people will start these stupid hoaxes or what they hope to gain by them. Thanks for the warning.

No ****! I'm so glad that I didn't get caught up in that one. I use them in my home (I've got a smoker and cats) and I'm always checking them to make sure tht they are full and that the bulbs are not blown out. Often I've criticised my Hubby for not checking them and replacing the oil/gel quick enough, leaving the unit to just warm the plastic! I might seem overly careful, but I don't trust things that get plugged into an outlet and "get warm"...at least, I wouldn't ignore them for very long. It just scares me too much. Hmmm. maybe I should check the dumpsters here...I might score a few because of this! ;)

I remember the story out about Glade and we have used the product in the past.We seem to live in a time where there is so much stuff being recalled we react to it without second thought.I figure if there is something wrong with what I bought, then I will expect my money back so I hold onto it.

I'm sorry whiteheather. I know about snopes but I never thought to check it. I have seen these things in my own home where they dry right up and get pretty brown so I figured it could happen... I'm VERY sorry.

I didn't hear about this hoax involving Glade Plug In Air Fresheners....although I don't use them in my house. I am always cleaning my house, and I find that the best scent your home can have comes from keeping it clean. I do like scented candles every now and then, but only when I feel like smelling something yummy.

I am so glad that you reposted this. I had not seen the original post that you posted, but I most certainly would have probably did as you and thrown all my plug ins away! I only have one or two left and do not intend to replace them when they are used but it isn't due to a 'fire hazard.' I am trying to stop using so many scented products as there is some 'real' research about the health issues associated with all the chemicals. I also didn't know about snopes.com that another posted mentioned in this thread. I have that site bookmarked now!

Oh dear I am sorry. If this is any consolation, you are better off without them anyways. I don't think it is too healthy to be smelling that fragrence on a steady basis daily anyway. That is just my opinion. Sending you a ((HUG)).

I always go directly to Snopes.com when I receive warnings like that. It is an incredible source of information about all kinds of urban myths and misinformation. I am so sorry that you had this expensive experience.

Thanks for the information on Glade Plug In Rresheners, Whitheather. Even thought I don't use them anymore because they were too strong for my nose. If anyone else asked me about it I'll surely tell them.

No. I haven't heard anything about it until now. However, it does sound like it could of been an late April Fools joke or at least used as one.

Well I guess we all learned didn't we? LOL I believed it too and didn't even remotely question it, simply because it did sound very logical. I normally will check snopes before I believe most anything but this was a case of "sounds too realistic to not be true". LOL Thanks for posting that it was a hoax indeed. And no harm done.

What a dumb hoax, why do they do it? I don't actually use the Glade plug-in fresheners in the house, I generally open the windows and doors for a few moments, get some fresh air into the house, a lot of the air fresheners are far too expensive and don't always smell that good really.

I read something similar about a year ago and threw all my plug ins away. I haven't bought any since, hoax or not with my luck it would come true! I switched to the Oust fan, and I absolutely love them! They aren't as strong smelling as the plug ins, but they get the job done.

Wow, I'm actually surprised that this was a hoax because I heard it quite a few years ago and refused to use them from that moment. Now I know it was a hoax, I think I shall start bugging my partner to start buying them lol. I always like the different fragrances they have but with me thinking they were a fire hazard, we never bought any.
