Today my computer has been running for almost 9 hours. The longest i have left it on was for one day. On that occasion i did a backup of my data. How long do you usually leave yours on for?? Do you think leaving it on can affect its performance such as heat taking its toll??

I usually only leave my computer on for the duration of time I am using it. My husband likes to leave it on "sleep" mode, but I don't, it bothers me for some reason. I don't think that we have to worry anymore about it going kaput from letting it run because of the hibernation mechanism that uses far less energy. I just think it's just as well to turn it off and give it a rest. But that's my opinion. :)

I usually have mine on all day and I'm using it all the time. A couple of weeks ago it broke and I hadn't realised but I had been blocking the vents with paper. My computer was exactly 3 years old to the month when it broke but luckily I took out a 5 yr warrenty when I bought it so they fixed it for free, I needed a new mother board and some thing else important. My brother said the 2 things I had to have replaced where the main parts of the computer and if it hadn't been under guarantee it would have worked out cheaper to buy a new computer than to get mine fixed. I don't have anything near the computer nw so hopefully it won't happen again (touch wood). I hadn't thought about it overheating just from being on but I might spend less time on it just to be on the safe side.

I generally leave my computer on unless I plan not to be using it for at least 4 hours. I, then, shut it off. But, lately, I've been putting it in sleep mode where it will shut itself down in about 45 minutes but keeps the setting so I don't have to reload the pages. I do this during times where I will be using it off and on all day. I don't believe in running it all day unless you're using it. It can use a lot of electricity, especially if the monitor is on. Also, that computer fan can wear down, too.

Oops, I mean leaving it in sleep mode keeps me from having to restart programs, not reload pages.

I leave my computer 24x7. i leave it on since the day i bought it. the reason is that i am constantly downloading torrents from different sources and i am running a website which requires me to monitor it from time to time. well. my electric bill seems to be fine anyways.

Normally i would not leave my home computer running for too long, i will shut it down once dont need to use, because my house seldom switch on Air-Conditioner during day time (save some money :)) But since my company office is running 24 hours and fully air-cond , so i never shutdown my computer unless there is a need or im away for leave for few days.

My computer is always on, but it has an automatic sleep mode, so it doesn't use much power. The only time I shut it down is when I need to do a general reset and do hard drive house cleaning.

My computer is never turned off. I have a habit of leaving it on because I am always on the computer.

Usually my computer is always on, at least for 16 hours, and I shut down when I want to sleep, but I can leave it if I still downloading files and not finished yet, or some programes still continue in my pc. I think no correlation within running your pc 24 hours with heat and computer performance. You only need to restart / reset, defrag, and using suitable cooler to your pc if you want the pc on every day. If people said that pc will be heat, how about big companies servers ? They always on every day and still ok, it just depend on the room, the cooling system, and reload system.

When I had my desktop computer I left it on 24/7/365 and it was always really warm in my room. This is one negative side of leaving on the computer. Now I have a laptop and I turn it off when I am not using it because it tends to heat up really fast. I am not really sure how the heat tolls on the computer. A lot of my friends have really nice liquid cooled and like 10 fans which is rediculuos but when you are running your computer alot it helps a lot. But im not going to spend the money on all that jazz.

I only leave mine on while I use it of course. I have never forgotten to turn it off - not once. That's damaging to it. Computers need their sleep too! And I have a laptop, so it's definitely more vulnerable when it's left on. It overheats pretty easily, and of course it uses up electricity and energy. Its lifespan will also be decreased the more it's on, so yes, I do turn it off if I don't use it. However, if I'm leaving my computer to go eat supper for half an hour to an hour or so, I don't usually turn it off (unless we're going out to eat or if I know I won't get back on it). If when I'm done eating I will resume being on the computer, I just leave it. My cousin never turns hers off. Once she didn't turn it off for two whole weeks! That really irritates me and she shouldn't have even gotten a laptop if she wasn't going to be responsible with it, I think. She hardly uses it and when she's not using it she never turns it off.

Well my laptop is on almost the whole day everyday except when I sleep. Just one thing we have to remember is that never sleep when its on since many thing may happen than could screw up your computer or you.
