One Night, I Took A Jeepney Ride On My Way Home And I Overheard The Driver Say..

that he did not notice the woman walking at the side of the road because she was wearing a dark outfit. It is good though that we missed her somehow. Immediately I recall that instance when the traffic people placed a call on television and over the radio, for people to wear light colored clothes at night to be highly visible to the motorists when darkness sets in. Do you observe this wearing of light colored clothes when you go out in the evenings? I do this all the time.

It is a good thing to wear light colored clothing so the car or jeepney's head light will reflect from the clothing. Something else that would be a good idea is to wear something with reflective tape somewhere on it. In areas where a lot of people walk beside the road it would be a great safety precaution. We have a road not far from us where someone is getting hit by cars on a regular basis You would think that they would learn to be more cautious.

If people would put some on their shoes or down the side of there pants or on a shirt they would show up better too.

wearing some reflective is a good thing that is being practiced in your area. the idea of doing this, must be be introduced in the philippines, too.

that is what we call as a danger area. people would best avoid being in such a spot for long. putting some reflectors therein will help the drivers in identifying that dangerous spot in the evenings.

Hi Trinidad! Lucky the woman didn't got hit by a the jeep. I usually wear light clothes when I go out. Especially if I know I might be going home late. I mean I think the trick for people who loves to wear dark color; is not to overdo it at night. Match a dark top to a light bottom. At least the light will reflect on your light clothes. And you can still enjoy wearing a dark top or vice versa. Fluorescent bracelets are also useful. I have seen some with my brother, light color at day and fluorescent at night. It helps too. Or things that are mettalic on pants, shoes...etc. They are many clothes who have been acessorized and in fashion which will still give you some glow/reflection in the night.(^^,)

oh, sure, aphroditei, those flourescent bracelets will be perfect in making us more visible in the evenings. it is also a good idea to match light and dark colored clothing.

I think this are good tips to follow and they won't harm your sense of fashion. And of course, you can still enjoy your nightlife. Thank you for the BR mark Trinidad! Have a great day! (^^,)

I was never fond of black neither do I go out often at night. From where I live its safer if you're not out in the streets at night even in broad daylight. Drivers are quite reckless and add to it the thugs in the streets.

even if i were in your place, i will surely adopt the kind of attitude that you have about preferring to stay home rather than going anywhere else.

I usually wear light-colored outfit during night so that I am very visible to the drivers. This avoid the accident and also, I would not be suspected as criminals who are roaming around at night wearing dark outfit.

definitely, that is a wise move, senses. you remind me that authorities will not run after persons in light outfits at night, in cases where there will be a crime commtted.

Hello mamtrinidad. Thank you so much for this post. I have never heard about it nor even thought about such a sensible thing to do. But then Im not always thinking about such things since I don't go out at night that often. Maybe I should just bring with me a neon orange/white jacket when I am out at night. I would have to spread this bit of info to all I know who also haven't heard about this. A pleasant day to you.

I bike to work. My schedule is from 3 pm to 12 midnight. You can imagine what I go through every time I set out to go home after midnight. One rule that I aim not to break is to have lights in front and at the rear of my bike. I have them, I always make it a point to turn them on before I ride them at night. These lights make me visible, even if there are no street lights. Lately, I have also installed wheel lights that attached at the valve of the wheel and turns on when you hit a bump on the road. The illusion of having a big round light on wheels is quite attractive and indeed they attract attention. These lights are there in lieu of bright colored clothes that I should be wearing at night.

yes, i agree with you that this is a perfect way of making yourself visible at nights whenever, you are out on the road biking.

I have had some close calls where I live. I am right off a highway and many people ride their bicycles at night and do not use tail or head lights. No reflectors are visable and the rider is wearing dark clothes with no reflective tape. When I walk my dog at night I carry a flash light that I swing naturally while I walk. It is visable for the drivers. I use a flashing light attachment on my dog's collar to protect him. I wear shoes with reflector material on them. You can never be too careful in the dark.

it is true that we cannot rely fully on the street lights and the headlights of cars at night. there are times when people will appear to be just shadows in the evenings. this is among the reasons which most offending drivers give when they get into some sort of evening accident/s. i can see that you are are an extra careful person, my friend, to be taking all these precautions whenever going out in the evening.

enrironmentalists will tell you that white is best to wear during hot days because that will reflect almost all of the heat back to the atmosphere. then the traffic guys will tell you that it is good to wear at night because, it will reflect so much of the light that strikes you at night. this may be the reason why many of us prefer to wear white against all other colors.

Well, since I hardly ever WALK outside, except to my car, I don't pay much attention to this. But my roomie has heard me complain about people wearing dark clothes plenty of times. Frankly its a wonder that I ever saw some of them! When I'm lucky they might have relective shoes on!

you are confirming now that it is really advantageous if people wear light coloered get ups in the evenings. i have been into the habit because, as i have said, i heard the traffic enforcers campaign for it on tv. now, i have more reason for doing so because, of this comment that you have given me now.

This is a very good tip, to avoid ccidents due to darkness. Why be the part of accidents knowingly. Light clothes would definitely avoid accidents.

yes, i do this also all the time because i'm driving a motorcycle from home all the way to the office and i work on a graveyard shift so it's really dark outside and the only light that i can see was from the headlight of my motorcycle.

I know, it is scary that so many people are walking around on the streets or riding bikes on the streets and they are wearing dark clothing. I always wear light clothing when I go out for an evening walk, but living in the country I make sure I am home before dark. I sometimes wonder if they just don't think about it. If you do wear dark clothing at least wear some sort of reflector so that people can see you. I always keep an eye out on the sides of the road when we are driving in the evening, you just can't be too careful.

how right you are, my friend. it is always best that we stay home as dark sets in unless, there is something important that we have to do in the evenings somehwere else.

i don't think alot of people give it any thought to the concern of whether or not they should were dark colors during the night. they'd me more concern on what would look good on me today or what do i feel like wearing. it's understandable, some of them might be leaving the house during the day so why concern yourself then at the off chance that you might get caught up going home or traveling in the evening. i'm actually a little bit more concern about the driver almost hitting the pedestrian. was she jaywalking? aren't crossings or pedestrian lanes usually well lit areas? don't vehicles usually slow down at an intersection or in areas of pedestrian crossings because of signs telling them to slow down or yield? i'm actually curious because i don't drive and don't know all the rules in driving.

we have to admit the fact that drivers are responsible for the lives they have with them in their vehicles, as well as, for those lives of the people on the road. the people on the road will have to help the drivers see them on a much easier level, though. if we are wearing dark clothing, then we can hold something white when we are out in the road in the evening. a white plastic bag is good enough help. another problem with pedestrians is their habit of crossing the streets without much care when, it appears to be quite deserted of traffic. they tend to forget that this is also the time when, drivers become careless, thinking that there are no more people walking on the deserted road. pedestrians must instead take extra care if on the streets in the evenings, on roads devoid of traffic as reckless drivers abound in the evenings. us, pedestrians, will have to think of being on the safer side at all times because, vehicles can kill us but there is no way that we can kill vehicles.

yes, you'd better start wearing those lighter tops whenever you go out in the evenings or in the afternoons wherein there is a possibilty that the night will catch up with you.

Hello,I would say sometimes it may be a bit hard to see someone who is walking at the side of a dark street, that is it is safer for people to wear sharp colour clothes so that other drivers can see them and reduce the chance of accident to happen.
• Philippines

this is true. i believe that by now it is common knowledge that, the color which is easiest to identify, even in the dark,is orange. but it is sufficient that light colored tops shall be worn when out in the streets at night.

well, it appears that it is better for us to wear light colored clothes always. when the sun is hot, it reflects the heat, when the evening comes, it makes us more visible.

this is a good advice to wear light colored shirts in the evening to avoid being hit by cars and jeepneys. colored shirts worn by people along the streets may serve as reflectors against the headlights of most cars and jeepneys so they can easily see you.
