Are You Guilty of.......

Lettuce Brutality?!?! Do you bang your head of lettuce onto the counter with a sharp THWAT!? to loosen the core enough to pull it out? Do you then slice the lettuce up with a sharp knife? I find that cutting lettuce with sharp knives or scissors hastens them turning that bruised rusty color and limp leaved. I have found that tearing the lettuce into eating sized pieces with your hands actually makes the salad to stay fresher longer. Mostly we eat leaf lettuces anymore so I am no longer guilty of banging ice burg lettuce onto the kitchen counter...shplatt!

You are so BRUTAL!! How can you bear to commit such atrocity to a lettuce? Aren't you afraid of being haunted by the ghosts of the vegetable kingdom? Let me tell you, I think they are so cute that I can't even bear to eat them (unless they insist on finding their way in between my burgers)! Yea, I don't eat vegetables. HAHAHA!:PP

yep, me too! now I mostly eat Romaine, and sometimes red leaf lettuce. I find that the Romaine will last much longer, and I just tear off a few leaves as needed. Another thing that helps a prepared salad to stay crisper longer is to store it in a glass bowl. To leave all "wet" veggies such as tomatoes and cucumbers and olives, in a separate container till ready to serve.

Yes I do. Be gentle when you handcuff me..lol I also vcut it with a knife. I didn't know that it would last longer and stay fresher if I did it by tearing the leaves. I will have to start doing that I buy alot of lettuce monthly so I will start doing it your way because nobody liked wilted lettuce. Thanks for the great tips and I will gladly use them..

Yes I do band the lettuce to loosen the core, it doesn't go bad so fast that way. I also agree with you it is much better to tear the lettuce with your hands, that's the way I do it. I have a tupperware lettuce bowl and I use it to store my lettuce and it sure keeps the lettuce good.

Dang right I am guilty!! That lettuce had it coming!! lol. I just find it easier and to be honest, it wouldn't matter if I tryed to make it stay fresher for longer. Seems vegetables freeze in my frig :P o well... maybe ill get a new frig and try this method :)

I am still guilty of banding the head on the counter but, I do not use a knife. I heard long ago that cutting it with a knife made it bitter and I believe it does. The other things you mentioned seem plausible.

I bang the lettuce. I find that it is faster to do it this way.

Iceberg I bang on the counter to loosen the core. Romain I use a knife for, but it doesn't turn brown from the metal knife because I don't chop it up until shortly before we eat it. Other lettuces I buy loose leaf and if the leaves are too big, I'll tear by hand.

i usually rip out the core, then put it in one of those "keepers".most of the time i just take pieces off as i need it,but if it's a salad and i'm using it all at once for the family,i'll take the time to cut it with a knife. it does seem like it discolors quickly if you cut it and save it-like it's trying to heal the edge or something.

I am proud to say I am not a batterer of lettuce, iceburg or otherwise. I was told when I was a child to tear it to prevent it browning and spoiling. I guess the knowledge stuck because that is the way I have always dealt with my letuce and it's true. It doesn't go brown and yucky.

I also like to tear myh leaf lettuce, as its nicer that way and doesnt wilt so much.I do not use iceburg anymore as its so low in nutrition compared to other lettuces.

I learned a long time ago to never ever abuse lettuce. lol I've tried to teach others that cutting lettuce with a life actually does speed up spoilage. Have also tried to teach how to keep a head of lettuce fresh for as long as two weeks in the fridge. It IS possible. Tongue in cheek here, but all of my lettuce is happy lettuce.

Lol! What a cute thread. I am pretty happy and relieved to say that I do NOT eat that much lettuce. I just can't take much of it. I can have a bit on some tacos or something, but not much at all. I have a VERY low tolerance for lettuce. lol. So to all those guilty 'bangers' hit it a few extra times for me *wink*

I am SO guilty of the banging part lol. I usually tear the lettuce, unless I'm using it for tacos, then I use a knife. Lettuce doesn't last long enough in my house to worry about it going bad lol.

Working as a grill cook in a restaraunt, I do bang the poor head of lettuce on the counter to loosen the core. But I have always tore the lettuce up with my hands because the metal of the knife makes the lettuce turn brown faster. LOL I think beating on the lettuce helps relieve stress from a busy day anyhow. It would be nice if the same worked for cabbage, I get tired of cutting the core out of that.

I never thought to bang it to loosen the lettuce. I may try that. I have done both slicing and ripping. If I am using the whole thing then I will slice as it will all get eaten in a short amount of time and not get brown. But if I am only using a portion then I will tear it as I also find that the knife does brown it fast.
