then asked for it back? My ex MIL at one time gave me two Hallart vases, just small ones, but valuable. She had quite a collection of them, and when she got remarried and moved she decided to split them up between the family, so she gave me two, my two sisters-in-laws some, and spread them out. A couple years down the road, she asked for them back. Personally, I felt kind of mixed up about it, since they were a gift, I felt that if she hadn't wanted to give them away to begin with, she shouldn't have, but on the other hand, I thought they were hideously ugly and was glad to give them back.

that's awful. i agree that when something's given to you out of goodwill, they shouldn't take it back, unless you give it back for some reasons. hmmmm...this is tricky...probably if she wanted it back for a good reason, like a helpful one, then it's ok. but if she just wanted it back with no reason at all, that's really tacky. people do things for a reason, unless we know what it is, we will never understand.

Don't ya just love that! My ex MIL gave us a beautiful antique desk as a wedding gift. Later on, she said she was giving us something else. She asked if I would be terribly upset if she were to not give the desk to us afterall. I was dumbfounded by this. I said that it was a beautiful piece and that I would love to have it in our home. She then got nasty over it. Her son was really angry over it but didn't say a word.
