Do you like to see a movie after you have read the book?

Once I know the story it kind of does it for me because you know everything that is coming. Or worse, they don't stay true to the book or you have already imagined a certain way things are going in your own mind, so then the movie disappoints. What about you?

I always like to see the movies based on books I've read. I think it's interesting to see how other people interpret the story and the characters, and sometimes the visual effects can be amazing. I don't tend to get annoyed when they leave out bits as I realise that the movie could never be the same as the books. The movie needs to be able to stand alone on its own merits, so that people who haven't read the book can understand everything that is going on. I am excited about the enxt Harry Potter movie coming out shortly, as it is the biggest book in the series so will be interesting to see what they have managed to cram into the movie!

Great point! I guess that is a different way to look at it.

Oh I love reading the books then watching the movies. Because then I can toss popcorn at the screen and say boo. Or just eat the popcorn and roll my eyes whenever they have left something out then talk about it later. BUT sometimes the movies are actually pretty good not exactly book story line but they are good. I also like to see the differences between the two and see if what they had invisioned about the characters is the same as what I saw in my mind.

I haven't read the Eragon books. What are they about?

Hey, I actually like that idea. That's the way I watch soaps! HaHa. Folfs laugh at me about my soap operas because they are so predictable and depressing, but I say I watch them for exactly those things. I love to see when something goes like I expected and love it when I want to yell at the screen. They can't be taken too seriously. Love your outlook!

Well it's the truth, I used to watch soaps but I don't watch much T.V anymore because well I'm not that interested. Have you read the Eragon Books? Or seen the movie? If you haven't seen the movie yet and have read the books I would strongly urge you not to watch the movie, it a recap I could tell you all that happens in the two hours of the movie. They did half the first book and cut out half of the stuff that happened in the first half. It will leave you p'd off beyond anything in your wildest dreams.

I'll often seen the movie after reading the book and sometimes vice versa. There have been times I've seen the movie first and then I'll read the book. Some times the movies disappoint and some times the books do. Other times it's just they are too different and each are unique in their own right.

I read so much that I want to get tangled up in the story and that is the impression that I am left with But you are right, the more technical the book is the more a movie might bring it to life.

I read a lot as well but some books I find transfer quite well to the screen and also some do better there. I've seen a few that way. Others though you are right the books are far superior. Each one is unique and I like to judge them one at a time.

I do specially when the book is so interesting you can almost see the scenes come to life in your mind. There's nothing more satisfying than recognizing the faces and the scenes that you have already formed in your imagination. It can get disappointing at times, I agree because most of the time it does not even come close to what you have imagined it to be. Still, I'm always interested to see how other people interpret the book.

It is great to see how they will do it, it is just usually disappointing to me. Thanks for posting!

I havn't really done this. I usually see a film, if i like it and a book is available, i read it. It's then that i notice the differences. Some films lead so far away from the original book it is unreal!

I like watching the movie version of the books I read, just to see what they did with it. and sometimes, there's a passage in the book that I just couldn't picture, so I'd like to see it fleshed-out. about 99% of the time, the book is better than the movie but there are some that I'd rather just watch than read. Like the Lord of the Rings books, I tried reading the first one but I just had a really hard time with the language used. The movies were great though. Although it is disappointing when the movie doesn't live up to the book, or come close to it. Like the Da Vinci Code movie. I waited for it for a long time. I loved the book. But the movie was like...it made me go, "What happened?"

Great point. When it comes to some of the deeper stuff like magic, the movie is better. Like, Harry Potter, my son devoured the books, but I just could not get into them, but the movies are ok.

I think I have only seen a couple of movies where I have read the book previously. I guess sometimes I feel like it's reading the book again, which I never do. I don't expect the movie to be the same as the book. They have to jam a whole book into 2-3 hours (gone are the days of mini-series like Roots). Sometimes books are written after the movie has been produced and released. The book written AFTER is usually pretty badly done because they are throwing together a book based on a screenplay and a screenplay doesn't have description written in, just dialogue. There have been some movies I've seen come out and said, "Oh, I want to see that. I read the book." But then I never do see the movie. Probably because I'd rather see a movie that I haven't seen. Seeing a movie of a book I've read is almost like seeing a movie twice. Of course I do see movies more than once but they have to be great like The Sound of Music, Grease, or Speed. What I find weird is the making of movies of movies that have already been made. There are some movies that have been made 3 and 4 times. Why? Are they running out of good material? They must be if they are taking books and making movies that don't stand up to the quality of the books.

Exactly. Like a great move toward the almighty dollar. Sometimes (most) the original just cannot be beat.

I have reached the point in life where I just no longer even go to a movie if I have read the book. So much gets lost in the filming, and very often, as in the case of "love comes softly" films, it is almost unrecognizable when you know the plot. I am almost always disappointed in the movies. I think that may in part be because with books you have to use your own imagination to fill in some of the details. Even if a movie comes on tv I hardly ever watch them.

I know. The Nora Robert's movie "Angel Falls" did ok in my book, but the romance was lost because it seemed so quick. That kind of passion and love should grow, not be in two hours.

It really depends on the book. Sometimes, I enjoy watching the movie only to see the differences, other times it annoys me that they leave so much out of the movies. I will not watch the movie of a book that I really, really enjoyed. I prefer to keep the print version in memory instead. Great question.

Thanks. I feel the same way. I love the story itself and how I imagine it in my own mind. Then to see someone take it and chop it up into a "selling" movie disappoints.

I would prefer to go for it if it is a history flick. Or even it is not then also I would 90% prefer to go for the movie. The movie gives you real time adventure. Although you can know what would be the next scene but you can't imagine how would it be picturized. The reading of story does creates fantasies but can't give you the real taste. This is what I have to say. Please don't take it personal but I would prefer to do that and I am not agree with you at all.

There are times I will watch the movie for the cinematic aspect of it. Then there are movies I refuse to watch perfect example is "Queen of the Damned" I read the entire series and all the books associated with it, I can't see taking 2 books and making one movie out of it. You are going to lose a lot of the actual story that way. I hadn't read any of the vampire cronicle books until I had seen Interview with a Vampire. I read that after seeing the movie and found they did a really great job keeping it close to the book. I quit watching Stephen King Movies for a long time becasue of the way the Stand was butchered when it was made into a movie. There are books that I think would be interesting as movies, however when you look at how much they will prolly cut out it is saddening.

No, I dont like to see a movie after i have read the book. Once, I see a movie after reading the book, and i dont't think it is still a good story. There is a popular idol teleplay named as 'meteor garden'.It is about the love between a poor girl and a rich boy.I read the cartoon book first. So when the teleplay turns out,I am very excited. In the cartoon book, the characters of the roles are vividly. The boy is very cool and handsome ;the girl is very beautiful. But the actor and the actress are both very common. Then I lose my interest in the story at once. There is a popular cartoon book that now has been filmed. It has the same problem that the actors can't understand and show the characters of the roles. When you read a story ,you can image the apperance and the character of the role in you own way.So the movie cant satisfied you.

I have found it that the books are usually better and if I have read it i am usually disapointed.. There are some that are still good though. I think i prefer the other way around, see the movie and then read the book.. That way there will be things that surprises me in the story =)

Yes in all instances that i have watched movie adaptations of popular books, I made it a point to read the book first. Reading the book first will give me the complete story and the real things. Movie adaptations are notorious for cutting scenes and changing some things in the story.

Sometimes I do enjoy watching the movie after reading a book, but, for example, my favourite author is Agatha Christie and many of her books have been made into films and the characters are changed or additional ones are added or some major ones are ommitted which I find a bit frustrating. Many books have been ruined by them being made into films but I think it's a case of personal opinion at the end of the day. Many people would rather just watch the film than spend hours or days reading a book when they can watch the film in a couple of hours. I guess I'm going to sit on the fence as I've been guilty myself of watching the film sometimes rather than reading the book :)

books into movies - harry potter book 6
yep, i often watch the movie even after i read the book. i just want to know what it would look in the screen compared to what i always imagine. i want to see how the character looks like and the setting resembles what i have in mind. sometimes, the movie is really disapointing cause they would leave something that is in the book. but movies are like that, its different from the book on some points. anyway, im dying to see the new movie of harry potter and also the last installment of the book. i hope that the movie would be as great as i imagined it would be and that the book would really offer a great ending.
