Hand-me-downs

Do you accept hand-me-downs from siblings, cousins or other relatives? In my case, I got used to getting hand-me-downs from cousins. There were 6 of us in the family and my parents could only afford the basic necessities. So my relatives gave us some of their things like clothes, shoes, toys, etc. I didn't like this situation much but I learned to accept the facts of life early on. What about you?

I am an only child so I never had to wear hand me downs. My girlfriends family however does something like this. They get together and trade clothing. The save all of the clothes that their children no longer wear. The all meet up at one place and everyone rummages through through the other peoples stuff to see what their children might wear. Whatever anyone doesn't want gets set aside to sell at a yard sale. This is a wonderful way to save money.

Well, trading clothes is rather different because you get to give as well as receive.

I love second hand clothes. My friends and I did the best thing one night. First I must back up. It started because I lost 80lbs and cleaned out my closet so I invited a friend over for dinner to see if she wanted to take some of the clothes. Then I invited a few other friends and we all cleaned out our closets and traded our clothes. We had clothes we did not want or fit us any more. I lost weight and gave my clothes to two friends who had gained weight and they gave me some of their colthes they could not fit in to any longer. There was four of us all together. Then we had dinner. We really enjoyed the evening. We still talk about our shopping trip at my home when ever we wear someone elses hand me downs. The clothes no one wanted was donated to a hospice house to make money. Being 48 I am not to old for handme downs and not to proud to accept free clothes. I love new clothes when ever I can get them.

I buy used clothes a lot for all of us. As long as it is in good condition I don't see anything wrong with it. I think it is fine to reuse.

I did when I was little and still do now. I just love it. The best part is that I'm a size just about everyone grows out of so I get awesome cloths that didn't really get much wear at all. I only wish more people had my small feet. But I'll take just about anything that's still good. I really love getting furniture and then I refinish it myself and it looks like new.

I never thought much of it as a kid because being the fourth of five children, almost everything I owned was previously owned. The only time I ever got anything new was at the beginning of the school year, and then only what I absolutely had to have. My kids had a lot of hand me downs too, mostly from their cousins who were a little older than they were. I bought them just the things they needed to supplement the hand-me-downs. The way I see it, as long as the clothes are still in good shape and still in style, there is not any reason not to make good use of them.

That's what I thought too. Most of the clothes I received were fairly new, as in, used only once or twice so they were still "in".

I still see it the same way, although my kids are growing too mast and since they outgrow the clothes before they get them, I have to buy mostly new clothes now. I still love to go through hand me downs when I get a chance though. I have a couple of friends who pass clothes around every now and then. When I lost weight, I put several pairs of practically new jeans that I could not wear anymore in a box. Then I added in some extra things that I did not wear anymore and passed them along to a friend. Another friend did the same for me. This way we all get something new and different to wear, and do not have to wear the same boring clothes all of the time. Besides, I really hate throwing out perfectly good clothes.

Rummage sales and thrift stores are a great way to supplement your wardrobe too. I find many gently worn clothes there too. Thanks for the best response.

i always got hand me downs from other kids that I knew, they were younger, but bigger than me. My daughter gets hand me downs allthe time from her friends, and now I am getting them from her, she is growing so much that she is outgrowing me rapidly. When she outgrows something that is timeless like a t-shirt or a pair of jeans, i try them on to see how they fit, I am enjoying this, because I cannot afford to go get myself new clothes, we also often buy her clothes from a resale shop where they look like new and are about half the price, sometimes, the clothing will still have the store pricetags on them. here a while back my daughter was collecting soda cans so she could buy herself a new bathing suit and we took the money from the cans anbd put it in the bank. Later that same evening, we saw a garage sale at a church and stopped in. There was a brand new swimsuit, with the tags still on it, the price on the tag was 42.99. She tried it on and itit fit her perfectly. I paid fifty cents for the thing. Was that a lucky break or what? She spent the money she had saved on some other new clothes she had been wanting, so everything worked out OK.

my mother never was the type to accept hand me downs from anybody for us..she said she worked everyday to make sure we got what we needed...not to say anything is wrong with accepting hand me downs..but I never really had to experience that..I'm just now finding out she didn't take them from anyone, she was more like the giver..I don't mind handing things down now, but I guess I get it from her when I say I don't get them...

I certainly would accept hand me downs from family or friends who had things that they did not want anymore that I could use. Some of the furniture in my home is from my parents who got new furniture. I try not to take too many things as I would like to choose my own belongings and house items. I do not accept hand me down clothes though as I would prefer having brand new clothes. There is nothing wrong with taking hand me downs, especially if you can not afford to get certain items.

I didn't have too many hand-me-downs, but I was also aware from a young age that my mother had very little spare money. I think it makes you appreciate things more when you get older and can buy what you like.

My thought has always been if it's in good condition and free then it's for me :) I don't care if it's a hand me down or anything like that. So long as I can use it and it's in decent shape I'll take it. I love freecycle because of this. I can get things I need that others don't need any more and I can get rid of things I don't need that others might want. It works out great. Why buy something new when you can get something that is almost new for free?

As the youngest of nine children I always got to wear hand me downs. I very seldom got anything new bought for me. My children however don't get hand me downs from any of their family memebers. I have the smallest children. My sons wear about the same size so they share clothing. I do however pick some of my childrens clothing up at yard sales and thrift stores to save money. I also will by the some brand new pieces to go with them.

i also have some experiences with hand me downs. my elder sister is 13 years older than me so i always get her hand me downs. i dont mind it because my elder sister is a great dresser and we have the same sizes. even the shoe size is the same! it saves us a lot of money and sometimes, we just share our stuffs. :)

I am the fourth-child of my family and I can't say "NO" with the hand-me down garments from my cousins and sisters. It even get me excited that I have a new clothes on my own though it's a hand-me down garment. I could even help my parents to save some money for my schooling and among other things.

Yes , I do use hand-me-downs from siblings and relatives. My kids too. If I do not like the style even if it fits me I do not wear it,and I hand it down to my daughter. But if it's a nice shirt that fits me well, why not. I even ask my relatives from other countries, that if they have clothes that they are not using anymore just bring it over and we'll use it. In the case of my kids, almost all their clothes are hand-me-down. They have no complains. Sometimes they are eager to get hand-me-downs..

I didn't mind hand me downs at all. Some times there are gold nuggets in the piles. When you live in an RV park and someone has to move, at today's gas prices, moving tonnage costs money. Something of worth just isn't worth it to drag across the nation. Giving it to a neighbor who can use it is a great idea and keeps the item out of the land fill. I got a very nice vaccum out of an RV that was moving to another state.

I have 3 older sisters and I would not hesitate when my parents just give me their grew-up clothes. I am even excited when my cousins would left me some hand-me-down garments.
