Hi All, I'm new here. In fact I just joined myLot 10 minutes ago! I've been suffering from insomnia for years. No one, including many doctors could help me besides giving me sleeping pills and xanax. I've also tried the supposedly herbal preparation called "Great Night Sleep" which I purchase online but to no avail. I hope somebody here could come to my rescue. John

I'm trying very hard not to take sleeping pills and xanax as far as possible. It is easier said than done unless I don't mind behaving like a zombie the next day. Usually if I need to do something important the next day, I'd resort to the pills. I've stopped taking caffeine of all natures for the last 3 or 4 years. Exercise could help sometimes but not all the time."Don't think too much"? Well, that's what the doctors told me. It's like saying "Don't worry too much" to somebody who had just lost his job! Any more ideas?

Increasing exercise will help decrease the mind activity. The endorphins released help create a balance in your body.

The following are self-help ways of ensuring good sleep practice: If you cannot fall asleep after 30 minutes, get up and do something - don't lie there and worry Keep active during the day Avoid working just before going to sleep, and give time to wind down Avoid stimulants late at night e.g. coffee Ensure the environment is conducive to sleep (quiet, dark, ventilated, not excessively hot or cold) Try relaxation techniques Get into the routine of sleep and wakefulness hours Ensure you have been exposed to natural light during the day Try to avoid napping during the day, as you are less ready for sleep at night Adopt a comfortable sleeping position that keeps the spine aligned - this can prevent further health problems such as backache.

Hi, Welcome to mylot.I guess that since you have insomnia you will be on here alot.Ah!Just kidding.Did you ever use those soothing sound at night.Like the ocean sound? I also heard that drinking warm milk at night helps. But yuk!Lavender smell also helps you relax.Try maybe a lavender air freshener or some lavender essential oils. You can add the essential oil to some baking soda then spread on your mattress, rub it in,then put your sheets on top. Also keeps you matress fresh..I love doing this,it relaxes me.Maybe coming here will help releive stress and that might help.

Hi all,Many thanks for your suggestions and advice. I've tried them all....no coffee, no tea, ocean sound, soothing music, lavender oil.... I could not take milk or any other drinks because this might make me get up to pee in the middle of the night. I have not tried lavender oil/baking soda on mattress though. My wife might kill me for doing this. But if this could really work, I might try to do it without her knowledge!Has anybody tried the herbal pill called GreatNightSleep? Please check it out at http://www.GreatNightSleep2.com and advise me if what is claimed is true. Like I said I tried this but it did not work! I always try to sleep without the help of sleeping pills and I normally end up loosing sleep for 2 nights before I've to resort to sleeping pills otherwise I'd get sick with fever, flu and the likes. I badly need some serious input from all!!

Hi! I suffer from insomnia most of the time. I have found that medications really didn't help me. I have found that taking a hot bath at night and then getting the house quite cool (about 65 degrees F) does seem to help me sleep. A doctor once told me that optimal sleep required a cool room. I always set the thermostat at 70...but lowering to 65 has helped tremendously. Most people refer to my house as the igloo, but I am feeling much better and sleeping much better too!

Hello johnwoon!(",) Welcome to mylot! Hope you are having a nice time here. Since you said that you have difficulty sleeping, this site will be of great help. You can spend your sleeplessless nights here answering and making discussions.(",) I think I'm not helping you relieve your problem not falling asleep. I understand that you already tried many methods but, I must say stop taking pills. There are many ways to induce sleep. Try having a massage, I think you would dozed off. Don't think too much of your problem and release your stress through sports. Avoid caffeinated drinks and start to drink lot of water everyday.(",) Lastly, always smile and live a happy live!(",) Great day!

Have you given yoga a try? It is amazing the things yoga can help with in a person's life. I highly recommend it.

HI FELLOW INSOMNIAC!!! Here is what helps me: 1. Do not watch t.v. an hour or two before bed, it makes your mind race and be active. 2. Do not read the last half hour it also keeps your mind active. 3. Have a cup of herbal tea. 4. IF you can see your hand in front of your face in your roomit is not dark enough for a good nights sleep (learned this froma study on sleep). So through a blanket over the window, by something to cover your eyes. 5. Make sure you are not hot or cold, this will mess anyone up. 6. Listen to soothing music or sounds befopre bed. 7. If you can't get you mind to shut off, write down everything that is racing through it and promise to take care of it later. 8. NEVER go over tomorrow or the future in your head before bed, just don't go there!! 9. If you have been lying there for 30 minutes get up, do whats bothering you, try to mellow back out. 10. Do yoga. 11. Try meditation it will clear your mind before bed. If you start thinking, just breathe and notice nothing but your breathing, "In" "out" is all you allow yourself to notice, if you have a thought you just let it go and return back to breathing. 12. If you really can't sleep try melatonin, low 300 mcg dose, just to help you relax or stay asleep. Good luck hope some of these help.

Hi okn0tok, Thanks! But isn't tea a herb? What tea were you talking about? Most teas contain caffeine. Melatonin is not approved in my country! John http://stopinsomnia.blogspot.com http://healthysite.blogspot.com

Hello John. I don't have your problem, but I do want to welcome you to myLot. Occasionally, when I couldn't fall asleep, I got into the habit of chanting the same phrase over and over again in my head to the exclusion of everything else. Something like "I will fall asleep, I will fall asleep, I will fall asleep...." You get the idea. After several times doing this, I would fall asleep faster and faster. Pretty simple, but it might work. Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Hi mizrae, What you've just suggested is very interesting. It's something like Transcendental Meditation. I shall try it tonight. With the hot bath/shower, prayer and your technique, it might just work? http://healthysite.blogspot.com

Yes, please pray hard for me!Having tried almost everything, seeing many doctors, I think the only think I have not tried seriously is praying. If all members here could all pray for me, the unseen "force" might very well be my last workable resort! I've heard of success stories about distant telephatic curing. I hope God is reading this appeal of mine! http://stopinsomnia.blogspot.com
