Does anyone do NaNoWriMo? (National Novel Writing Month) I've done it several years, but I've never "won" (reaching 50,000 words in one month.) Has anyone doing it? Are you planning to do it this year? Do you think you can reach 50k words in one month?

I've done it twice. Got closer to 50,000 the second time, but still only about a third of the way. I'm not really a fiction writer and don't think I'll try it again, but I'm still adding to last year's novel now and then. Just don't have the time to concentrate on it. It's a fun time, though, and I'll miss it. Plenty of people do hit the mark and even go way over it, so there's hope for you yet. Are you going to try it again this year?

I've learned from it that fiction isn't my genre, but I may try again anyway. It's hard not to get caught up in the excitement! Last year I wrote about half of it within the first 3 days, but then I ran out of steam and ended up at around 40,000 words.

I have not participated in NaNoWriMo but a writing board that I frequent has the same challenge in July. There is no prize except that the organizer emails you a certificate you can print out. I did it the last two years and both times I reached the 50,000 mark. We are kind of lax on what is considered writing. I included journal entries. Hard to write when you are focusing on editing. I do not, however, include posts on message boards. I don't have a blog or that would count. So basically it is any writing I do at writing group, any journal writing I do and any poetry and short stories I write. Lately, I have done a whole lot of nothing. Not sure whether I will participate this year. It is good though because I keep track of my daily word count on a calendar and it motivates me. I don't think it's much help if it motivates me to write in my journal though. So, to answer your question, yes I have written 50,000 words in a month in July 2006 and July 2005.
