My husband is not happy living where we live and would love to move elsewhere. We are looking for a place with decent employment opportunities, reasonably low crime, reasonable cost of living, lower housing cost (120,000 or less for average 3 bedroom house), and decent weather, but preferably 4 seasons. Can you tell me about the city you live in and whether it meets any or all of these things? Thank you in advance.

Try southern cities of 10 - 20 thousand people. Low crime and $120,000 will buy a nice house with some land just outside of town. I live even further out in the boonies in an unincorporated area. When I moved here in 1981, I had to drive 50 miles to see a traffic light. Now, there 4 within 20 miles and the closest is only 8 miles away. Even still, houses are reasonable and crime is low. If you shoot a criminal caught in the act you are very unlikely to be prosecuted. The result? Crime is very low. Here where I live employment opportunity is very low. That's why I recommend the town of 10 - 20 thousand people. There are 2 of those within 50 miles of here and both have reasonable employment opportunity. Where am I? Northern Arkansas. Now, don't everybody come, we have almost too many already!

Thanks for responding. I would love to live in an area where the closest traffic light was ONLY 8 miles away, but I think that I am a country girl at heart. My husband, is quite the opposite and barely likes living in the sburbs (though that is the compromise we have made). I love the south and will add Arkansas to our list of possibilities.

I live near philadelphia, pa, but I was posting here about the upstate in South Carolina, and Western North Carolina. Along I-85 is a growing area. actually from Atlanta, Ga to Charlotte, NC, though I don't know a lot about Georgie. I used to live in Spartanburg, SC and know that the area there is good. The cost of living is not high, they have had some of the lowest gas prices in the past years. It is nice country side and is a small city and country atmosphere. The one problem is there is very little winter, but if you want to see the snow you can head up I-26 to North Carolina. Being at the foothills of the Appelachians, the bad weather is either to the east along the coast, or go up the mountains to the west and north. Being in the south it is hot during the summer. The hurrican season can get rainy but most of the hurricanes themself seem to pass by and you only get the rainy edges and not the brunt of the storms. Spartanburg and Greenville are in the center of the area and there are some other small cities and towns that would be good places to consider.

The Carolinas are two states that have come up often in our discussions. We actually met at Fort Jackson outside of Columbia, SC. We have also lived in Florida and have experienced a full blown hurricane (Wilma 2005). That is an experience I would rather not go through again. I definitely think North Carolina would be a great place for us to settle and will research Charlotte and nearby areas. I will also look into Greenville and Spartanburg (we stayed there on our move back from FL). Thanks so much for your insight.
