Well we live in an average sized house with a large mortgage - so I don't know where that leaves me!! But - seriously - our mortgage will be totally paid off in 3 years' time, and we have no wish to upgrade to a larger house and get into debt again, so I guess having everything paid off is best!

I'd prefer to live in a small, well-planned house than a large one, regardless of the financial benefits. A lot of the big houses around here lack character, and have a useless formal living room that no one ever goes into. People put their nice furniture in the living room, and end up spending most of their time sitting on their worn out furniture in the family room off the kitchen. Big houses are also a much bigger chore to clean, especially when they have features like two-story entrances full of windows that are too high to reach. I'm in a medium sized house right now, but I sometimes miss the apartment I used to live in. The rooms flowed into one another better, it had lots of appealing architectural features, and I could get the whole place clean in 45 minutes or less.

Yes, I live in a flat with only 3 rooms that I won outright but I do miss being able to walk straight out into the garden all the best urban

well as you know, houses are very expensive here in Rome, so mortgages are very common. I call myself lucky two times then..because i have a place of my own and because I have no mortgage to afford!!! i have never been deeply linked to a particular house in my life. maybe this is because we changed many houses during my past life. I have always been linked to people mainly than to places but now I am so happy I have a place I can call mine and little by little my house is becoming my home and I feel at home here and it is a sort of little nest where I can feel comfortable and peaceful..a beautiful sensation, indeed. Of course i wish I had a bigger one or there are so many things to change and to improve it..but this is a good thing..having something new to do and to project each time, isn't it???

I would rather prefer to live in my own small place than in a large mortgaged place. I actually live in my own house. There is a saying in my ethenic mother tongue, Malayalam, which says "it is better to be the head of a small organism, than to be the tail of a large organism".

Perhaps, this expression is somewhat similar. A big fish in a little pool or a little fish in a big pool. all the best urban

i live in a large house. my dad paid the house 5 years ago and the mortgage was really high. i'd rather live in a small place i own right away rather than having a large one with a large mortgage. its okay if my salary would be high, but im still a student so...;p

We live in a large house - with a small mortgage. But we only live in a large house because we added a whole floor onto it when my mother came to live with us over twenty years ago, and we already had five children. Now that everyone bar my wife and I have gone, we have a large house with only two people. But it's great for family occasions!

I have a small place that is mine but I want a larger one now...the problem is I cannot get one without having mortgage, as I cannot afford it otherwise. So, while I hate financial obligations, especially the long terms ones, I have to get a morgage for the house of my dreams :( - unless, I win the lottery ;)!

Hello urbandekay, I think I would choose to live in a place where it is free from any financial obligation. If I were to live in a small place, I want to make sure that it has a big area for future expansion.
