My opinion of slavery is that it should not even be allowed, especially these days. I don't think it is right to make anyone do things against their own will. I really don't think it is slavery if someone is willing to pay someone to work.

Yes. It is very sad to know that. I feel sorry for those people who are made to do things against their will.

Having the fear of the lord is surely going to solve most of the problems. If u have the fear of the lord and you love your neighbour ,you wont have the mind of enslaving anyone

Asking if slavery (of any kind) is okay is rediculous. What year is this? I think that slaves should be repaid for their forced labor. Just like I feel Germany should repay Holocaust victims.

Slavery is not cool. Abraham Lincoln will come back and fight you if you disagree.

It depends on what type of slavery you are talking about. It was not just the Africans who were enslaved. Before that it was common that if one won a battle, all the survivors were forced to work for the victors as slaves. The victors rushed at the city or town and took as many captives as possible who were forced to work for them for nothing. If a man gambled away his money or goods and could not pay, he or and his family were enslaved to pay for the debt. Although one could inherit slaves "born in my own house" and a soldier could capture an enemy and raid a village and get a girl to be his wife's maidservant, most of the time they had to pay considerable lots of money for buying a slave and the slave had work off his payment. If he was honest and decent, the master might free him in which he became a patron. This was the type that continued and eventually faded until the modern or racial form of slavery appeared. That is where you enslaved a certain race, or religion and the worse as it was not because of war or inability to pay, but because of the person's looks and beliefs. All right, should Africans be paid for slavery or not? No. The ones who should have been paid were the ones that were slaves. Children should not be punished for their parent's sins. So therefore if you are descended from a plantation owner, you should not pay.

Hi there Yes Slavery has been around since the beginning of time. That is not the point really. I think what the issue is about is that it is not the beginning of time and we are now supposed to be intelligent civilised people. The trouble we have because of slavery is what the effects are and what could be done to make things better for thos that have been affected by slavery. Debnise

Slavery of any kind is of course not OK. Unfortunately it is still happening today. But I assume your second question refers to American descendants of African slaves in the US. No, they should not be paid now for their grandfather's or great grandfather's suffering. Our country should have made good on their promises at the time- which I believe was that each slave should receive "forty acres & a mule". But it's long past any reasonable statue of limitations and long past the point were any one can reasonably claim to be suffering from slavery. Which is not to say that some Americans aren't suffering from inequality & bigoted practices. When those situations arise, they should be addressed through whatever channels are appropriate for the case.

it was wrong and inhumane. but paying the decendands is a bit extreme. why not pay the europeans for building some african countries. my best bet is to let it be what it is. the past. all have learnt much from their mistakes. slavery is still somewhat active in the east but if the west had their way, it will also resolve.

Then why not pay the jews for their suffering in ww2. or the south african boers for their suffering. or the indians in america for their suffering. the list is endless.

Nope. Not OK. God made men. men made slaves. Men are equal in the eyes of the Lord and are not a higher level than any other race created by God. Slavery of any kind is not good among men... We should only be the slaves of the Lord.

That is so true

Paying someone who was (or is) actually a slave is something that should be done. Just who would be responsible for paying them, anyway? Not the government; they had nothing to do with it. The slave masters would be responsible for paying their slaves. Paying the decendents of slaves is ridiculous. The decendents did not suffer the indignities of slavery. If anyone is still harboring ill will for the slave masters, it is their own doing. This is in the past, not the present. We are free people and can do what we want. We make our lives the way we want. We determine our own destiny. How about the Egyptian slaves who built the pyramids? I would not pay their decendents for what happened so long ago. My mother was doing the geneology of our family. There were no slaves in our history. If the decendents of the slaves were to be paid, it would come from taxes collected from everyone. Why should I have to pay for the slaves of 200 years ago when we had no slavery in our family?
