Should teachers be allowed to smoke on school grounds?

At my kids school, the teachers have an area at the back of the school where they go and smoke. This area is out of bounds for the kids, but if kids are coming or going to and from school they can see the teachers smoking. I feel they are not teaching kids the right thing and they should not be allowed to smoke anywhere on school grounds. Do you think this should be allowed?

Cigarettes - Teachers personal business.
I think kids need to know that teachers are human beings too and also have faults like everyone else. If a teacher smokes that's their personal business. I personally think the whole idea of smoking bans is getting too out of hand. It's everyones right to smoke or not.

For me they are not allowed in public area specailly in school. It's really bad for the health of our kids. :(

I do have to say they don't do it close to the kids, but where they are the kids can still see them. Thanks!

Hmmmm Seems like it wouldn't set a very good example if they did smoke on campus.

no...here smoking on school grounds at any time by anyone is illegal. Even if you are an adult and it is after school hours and no one is there. I think it should be that way,. =) But that is just my opinion!

I think it should be this way too, a school is meant to be a child friendly place and as far as I am concerned that means a no smoking area. Thanks!

In this state. . .all of our shools are 100% smoke free. That includes teachers, janitors, office workers. In my oppinion what they did here is awesome. By setting an example for kids to follow. The students watch every move adults make and if they do it. Then they think well it's not hurting them so why not? I just wish this kids would recognize and understand the long term affect that smoking has.

I think it should be like this too. Schools are a role model place and they do need to do the right thing. Students do watch adults and they do take in what they see. Thanks!

Kids see people smoke all the time, so I dont think that banning teachers from smoking will change how the kids view smoking. They are just as likely to be influenced seeing a teacher smoke as they would seeing some random person sitting on the sidewalk smoking, so i dont really think there would be a point to ban just teachers.

Teachers quite often do the talk about how bad smoking is for you, I feel that if we want the kids to take that seriously then they shouldn't see someone that has just said how bad it is go and have a smoke. It would probably confuse the kids. Thanks!

I am a Vice-Principal, and I totally think that teachers should NOT be allowed to smoke anywhere on the school grounds. Teachers act as role models to their students and the students are very impressionable. They have to lead by example. cheers,

Thanks for this, I agree with you completely. It's good to have some input from someone that works in a school. I agree that teachers need to lead an example. Thanks!

I think all schools should be smoke free. I feel you can't teach a kid not to smoke if you don't set a good example. We all know some parents smoke. In some households both. I don't smoke but my husband does..I can't teach them not to smoke when my husband does. Right now...my kids don't like it..But my teen is around it enough that peer pressure just may get to him.

I think schools should be smoke free too. Peer pressure is a big deal and that is why a lot of teens will start smoking. I hope your son will decide not to do it. Thanks!

Nope. It used to annoy me. Personally I don't see how they can expect "teens" to stop if you have a teacher lighting up. There supposed to set an example and they could always be professional and wait for the right time. ~Joey P.s Just my views :)

I agree or if they can't wait for the right time, then they should be made to go for a walk or drive somewhere away from the school. Thanks!

I do think that teacher's should be allowed to smoke in an area that you are describing. Teacher's are already scarce enough! I think that we would lose even more if we tried to take away even more of their rights.

Maybe if they really needed to have a smoke then it should be somewhere where no kids can see them at all. Thanks!

No. I dont think they should be able to smoke on school grounds. In nsw they are not allowed. They must go outside the school grounds. I am fine with them smoking outside the school. Best wishes to you

Hi,supercook! In my high school, teachers aren't allowed to smoke on school grounds. There are very stick rules for teachers and if a teacher is found smoking in campus,he will be "knicked out". I don't think teachers should be allowed to smoke on school grounds,if they want to,they can go to the smoking room for them.

I think this is the way it should be too. I feel that it is almost encouraging kids to smoke by doing it in front of them. Teachers do need to set a good example. Thanks!

Yes they can but don't let any other people catch them and know about it. Which is quite hard i guess. So it better not to smoke. ... http://pay4effort.blogspot.com http://cool2share.blogspot.com

If it is allowed then they should find a better spot than where they are going now. It is so obvious at the moment. If I was a teacher I wouldn't want the kids to see me because I can just imagine the questions they would ask. Thanks!

You are right they are not teaching right things. Teacher should be a model and a good example for the students. I dont think its allowed for the teachers to smoke in the school. In our school where i went too smoking is prohibited. If somebody can be caught they will face something in return for their behavior.

I am not sure if they are really allowed or they just think they will get away with it. I know other schools are not allowed to do it. I definitely think they should be setting a good example. Thanks!

I think that is a good idea. I am not sure if they are really allowed to or they are just breaking the rules. I don't think they are teaching the kids the right thing though. Thanks!

Here where I live in Rockford, teachers are not allowed to smoke on school grounds. If they do they get fined and a suspension and possible jail time. I personally believe that smoking in public should be banned but many people would say its a violation of rights??
