Blue Heron?

Blue Heron - I think that's what this bird is known as. I caught this along the banks of thre Mississippi River near downtown Mineapolis.

I was out and about near and in downtown Minneapolis Wed. evening for the purpose of getting ideas and photos for discussions. Boy have I done it today starting discussions. Anyhow this was taken at Boob Island on the banks of thre Mississippi River near downtown. This was right after it landed on the rocks. I have a shot of it's wings still slightly opened as it landed to do some fishing. I also have a few shots of it fishing and having it's prize catch in it's mouth. I am not positive but I think it's called a Blue Heron or crane. If anyone knows this species for sure please let me know. I'll add the other photos to responses also. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Great Blue Heron - Stunningly graceful and beautiful bird.
Yep it's a Great Blue Heron for sure.. No doubt about it. They are so gorgeous. We have a pond on the next street over and the Great Blue's and White's come over from the Mississippi (about 3/4 mile away) and sit along the edge all the time. I've seen as many as 5 sitting over there at a time. Good catch and fantastic pics Bob!

Did you take this photo? Where are you at? Statewise I mean? I live about a mile from the Mississippi in Minnesota. A northern suburb of Minneapolis. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I didn't take this one, it's one of those public domain pictures from wikipedia. I'm in Illinois, but still a fellow river rat... LOL

Great shots Grandpa Bob! I have a view of my local river (The Tyne) from my office window and often see a family of swans that live nearby. It looks funny as there are industrial buildings on the opposite bank (the place they build challenger tanks actually) Most people panic when they see herons around here. They're an endangered species, but lots of people hate them because they steal fish from garden fishponds (easy pickings I guess). In fact my dad had a 'visitor' recently who ate about 5 of his Koi (huge goldfish things). He'd kept them for almost 15 years so they were getting real big. At a guess I'd say to replace them with similar sized ones, you'd pay about £150 (300 dollars -ish) EACH!

Wow. it ate your dads fish in the pond. That's a dad exspensive fish isn't it? Herons are just so graceful as big as they are.

Where does the name Boob Island come from? I am afriad I can't identify a bird that is not Australia. It does remind me a lot of the birds we have here with their long beaks, poking around on grass near water sources.

I am not sure what it is called but it is sure pretty. We have the egrets, crains, and white herons here in the Central California. They are pretty. I would love to see other parts of the Mississippi river than just New Orleans. I went with my son 8-9 years ago. I loved it.

It's so varied all over the states that it runs through. Downtown has done some great things along the Mississippi River. That's another discussion though. Hahahaha! Thanks for the response. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I'm sure you've already gotten your answer by now, but I asked hubby anyway and he told me that it's a blue heron. We have a lot of them around here as there is a huge wildlife sanctuary not too far from us where there are all sorts of water fowl and other critters. There's actually one blue heron there that loves to block the way of anyone driving in and he waits until the last minute when the car is only a few feet away before flying up and out of the way. Then after the car passes, he lands right back in the same spot. And he gives this look like "Do you MIND?!" LOL

The dark topknot is throwing me off a bit, but I think it is a blue heron. I believe immature birds do have a dark topknot. Great picture. Looking forward to others!
