why do some kids prefer the floor instead of the bed?

Ok I have a 8 year old son that prefers to sleep on the floor than his bed.. I never understand why.. Could it be cause the bed is to soft for him or? But he moves all the time, I mean he sits up with his eyes closed and moves around I think he's half sleeping when he does this.. Or he'd he just sit up and lay back down.. I am thinking the reason he chooses the floor is because he has more room.. What do you think?

They don't as have far to fall...LOL...Just a guess. I really don't know, but I do know when my grandsons stay over night and want to sleep in the living room, I make them a nice bed with blankets so they are more comfy. They could give a hoot, and by morning I find them on the floor far away from where they started. I think it is because they have more room and feel safer knowing they aren't going to fall.

Yeah I think it is because of more room, Falling off the beds do hurt thats for sure, but yet sitting up and falling down quick I'm sure does too.. I don't know I don't even if I ever even done that when I was a child more than likely I did though.. My son does the same thing I'd put his blankets out and he's in one spot the next morning he's over on the other side of the floor.. HE just refuses to sleep in a bed.. Hopefully by the age of 10 he will...lol Thanks for your reply!

Have you ever asked him why he doesn't want to sleep in a bed? It is okay if he doesn't and eventually maybe he will. If he is comfortable and doesn't complain that his body aches all over than I wouldn't worry about it. My grandsons do it too!

Okay I don't really have an answer for you, but when I was a kid I LOVED to sleep on the floor!! I don't know why, maybe because nobody else did it and I liked being different =) If we had carpet in our house now (we have hardwood floors) I would probably sleep on the floor with my kids when my hubby isn't home (we always camp out in the living room becuase I don't like being in our bed without him).

Different is always good.. Maybe thats why he does it, I just don't know.. He just loves it he makes his own little bed and puts his pillow down and out like a light he goes.. What ever gets him to sleep right! thanks for your reply!!

I don't know, both of my girls downgrade by always wanting to sleep on the couch. I think it's doing something that isn't normal that is the appeal for my two. But I am not for sure.

Humm maybe so.. There has been a few times he's fallen asleep on the couch too and I won't bother him sense he looks so peaceful, cause I know if I were to wake him he'd be up the rest of the night or he'd get cranky and just want the floor again.. Thanks for your reply!

I have been asking myself that question for years now, and still haven't come up with anything for sure. I think though that they just like the freedom of the extra space. During the summer, it is also quite often cooler on the floor, or at least that is what they tell me.

my daughter does that but only because she wants near me, wherever i am, like i'm in front of the computer, she will lay on the floor beside me, but my kid brings her pillow and blanket with her, and fix it on the floor before lying down. but on her regular sleeping time, she prefer the bed.

Each child is different and they have different preferences. My older one would sleep just about anywhere and in the wierdest positions! My younger one will sleep nowhere but on a bed! He's not comfortable sleeping in my arms either. Maybe your son needs more room to feel comfortable. He feels he has the whole floor rather than a bed which restricts his movement..esp. the sitting up and then laying down.
