Letting your personal computer open the whole day does it contribute a big amount of consumption for electricity?I posted this because i just want to know if letting my pc on the whole day like 8-10 hrs a day contribute the big amount of power consumption or it does not? My computer is always open everyday 8 hrs is the shortest time, sometimes someone is using it and sometimes no one using it, just leave there open. How about you, is it your habit to leave your computer open so that when you come back you dont have to turn it on? Or you turn it off before you leave or do a household chores and turn it on again when you come back?

If the monitor is off then you don't need to worry cuz da CPU doesnt need much, if u r using an AMD processor then u can also turn on the AMD cool n' quiet feature too for enhanced energy misering. moving over to an LCD will also reduce power costs greatly, when i go to hav food i put the computer on standby and when i go out or something i put it on hibernate thereby i save time and money from these habits.

We leave our 3 PCs on all day every day unless we are going out of town for more than one day. Here is an article about how much power your PC actually uses and what you can do to reduce the amount of power: http://www.microsoft.com/smallbusiness/resources/technology/hardware/do_you_need_to_turn_off_your_pc_at_night.mspx

XP is still the best. - Xp is the best operating system.
One better option to minimize the electricity bills is to turn off your monitor off as the monitor is the one part that uses a lot of electricity. This way your computer is also remans switched on. When downloading just queue in the downloads in a download manager and just switch off the monitor. When you are not working it can really help cut down on your bills.

Dear archer1811, During the office hours I use my office computer and internet. When I reach home I use my personal computer. On Sundays I use my computer more than 8 hours. Whenever I go out I put off my house computer. As far as I am concerned the computer does not consume much electricity because it runs on transisters. Therefore it consumption is of electricity is very less. My office computer kept opened for more than 13 hours per day. Therefore nothing to worry about electricity consumption. Have a nice day.

I think it will depends on your pc, i mean the higher pc you are using, the higher voltage of electricity it consumes, and it also depends weather your monitor is on power saving setup, but if you had setup your pc on auto power saving mode, i guess electric consumption is not that bigger, however it is still wiser to turn off your pc if you will not use it for long hour.

In India it costs less than 10 cents (if it is home computer - installed at home) and may be 20 cents a day if it is installed in commercial or business area. It is negligible. If the computer is attached with printer and if printer works for a long time in a day, then your bill will shoot up.

That is better. The bill not increase enourmously, just because you play for whole day. The consumption of power supply for computer is negligible compared to other gadgets at home.

My computer is on all the time. But if no one is going to use for more than 10 minutes the screen gets turned off.We received a letter from our electricity company and this is one of the suggestions they had to save energy...I just make it habit to do now. Because the screen alone draws a lot of power.

At one point I didn't think it did, however I do have a friend who had to deal with this issue for school he works with the school district it seems that each and every item you leave running in your home does add up by the end of the year. Computers take a lot of power even when they are not being used but just left on, so it is better to turn it off. Same for other electronic equipment, people may not even be aware of how much they have plugged in and using power during the course of the day. Just unplugging or shutting things off that are not in use can add up while it might not seem like a great deal over time it does cost. It now has me turning off computer monitor, as well as the cable box, which often was left on when tv was turned off, and when things are not being used the power is not shut down.

i have been using my pc for several months now and i got amazed by the increase of my monthly electric bill. there is an increase of about 30% compared that time when i was not using any pc. the ontuinuous use of the pc for straight 8 hours a day contributes muh for higher electrical consumption. one saving tip to minimize the use of electricity is to switch off the pc when it is not in use. i always do that also to avoid overheating of the machine.

Use of a PC does use electricity, especially since most power supplies are 350 watts or often much more. The newer and more highpowered your system is, likely the more power you are using when it is actually in use. A good way to lessen the usuage, is to use an LCD monitor instead of a CRT tube monitor. The LCD's use much less energy. One other thing I would like to point out: If your computer is on but not in use, it will probably go into energy saving mode and will not use nearly as much power as when you are actually using it.

I often let it work for over 10 hours, although sometimes no one use it . I have to pay much money for my P.C. every month. So now I let it work only for 4 hours, then I can afford my electricity. You will use 1 degree electrity if you use your P.C. for over 3 hours.

I have a new computer now, it eats 520 watts. that is considerably more than my old machine. So I shut it off. My electric bill is high enough as it is. It is a lot faster than my old computer and so I hope the bill will stay the same.

Did you notice a large increase with the higher wattage? I was a afraid of that when my husband go his new PC. I think his has a 600 watt power supply (he went a bit above and beyond so he didn't have to replace it when he upgraded) and I didn't notice a change at all. We even decided to keep his old PC and my son uses it. We went from 2 emachines, to 2 emachines + a 600 watt PC.

I have been told it doesn't cost all that much at all infact I was told that it is starting up of the computer as in many electrical things that costs the most. So I don't woryy about how long I have mine on.

It does not contribute that much to the electric bill by leaving it on all day. However, you should turn off your monitor at least as that will save you quite a bit of on your electric bill as well as help the monitor last a longer time. I turn my computer off at night because I can not sleep because of the sound of it running and the fan going and also if I go away on vacation but otherwise the computer stays on and the monitor off when not in use.

I too leave my computer running 24/7. I have programs running all the time. However, I turn off my monitor and speakers to conserve energy. * Maintaining a well run computer is important for power consumption, keeping it dust free and all that. The less heat it generates, the less the fan has to spin to cool the thing off and that is good for the computer and the electric bill. * This website has good info about computers and their power consumption. * http://www.hardwareinreview.com/cms/content/view/33/

i read this in a magazine.Modern computers are rated to handle a maximum of about 300 to 400 watts. Normally, your computer may only be consuming around 100 - 200 watts. For example, if the rate of electricity were .05$ per KWh, it would cost (200/1000) * .05= .01$ per hour. So if you ran your computer 8 hours per day, it would cost you 7.2€ per month. monitors use a lot of electrcity, so just turn them off when your not using your pc. you can also set your pc to automaticly shut off your monitor when not in use for so long.
