Do you visit Tanning Beds?

tanning bed - they always look so space age to me.

my first encounter with a tanning bed was when I was 11 years old - we went camping in minnesota and the campground was really inclusive. they had a rec area with a swimming pool that was outside but you swim underneath the wall and you were now inside - it was so cool. they also had tanning beds and even though I was a kid I was permitted to get on and use it. I do not believe they even had goggles available, I know I did not wear any anyhow. :(

I was at the dermatologist office today and they had a patient information video going. it mentioned the dangers of using tanning beds - the increase risk of cancer, the aging and wrinkling of your skin and other things. It mentioned the affects to be worse if you use the beds and are under 35 years old. Sounded pretty worrisome to me. Do you use tanning salon beds? how long have you been using them, how many times do you use them?are you concerned about the ill effects, or is a golden tan worth the risk?

I am very pale/fair skinned. I have done my best all my life to avoid the sun. I never understood why people wanted to "bake" themselves just for a tan. We are what we are, black, white, olive, tan, whatever. I know that the sun/ UV rays are very harmful to the skin. My mom & sister tanned frequently and have many wrinkles, etc. My step mother looks as if she has leather for skin. I , on the other hand have clear, wrinkle free skin. My doc says it's because I stayed out of the sun for most of my life. I prefer to be healthy than to have a golden tan. Even if it means I look like Casper...lol

One of my best friends from back home owns a tanning salon. I worked there for a while right before I got married. I tanned a few times, but not many. And when I did, I tanned for a very short amount of time. I don't really think that a tan is worth all the risk. I guess the main reason I tanned was just because I worked there and people commented about how pale I was all the time. I don't really mind being pale, though. It's better than looking like I'm 50 years old when I'm only 30 I suppose!

I agree, tanning booths are very popular in this small town I live in, it frequently surprises me to find out how young a person actually is when their appearance made me think they were much older - with dry leathery and wrinkled skin.

I don't...I would rather be pale. I remember reading some years ago in a local paper about some poor girl was 18 and instead of going to her prom..she was being treated for multiple melanomas. This is what I seem to remember about it.. It seems that when she was 7, Dad bought a tanning bed for himself, and she used it regularly. So by 18, she was suffering with cancer.

definitely not. I prefer how my skin looks when it is pale, so I keep in the shade and wear high factor sunblock (30 is not high factor, despite that it is recommended - use a high factor sunblock, usually with a picture of 30. I use 50+ ) I don't like the look of a tan.

of course it was. in the times these stories were set, it was aspirational to have pale skin. it suggested that you were wealthy enough not to have to work manual labour on the land. noble ladies wouldn't have been out ploughing and getting sunburn ;p it's only in more recent years that a tan has been widely considered desirable.

I've noticed in fairy tales it is always the Fair Maiden, not the tanned dame.

I was wearing shorts once to a restaurant and a colleague saw me. He said "I have two words for you. Tanning bed." In those days I didn't have time to get out in the sun because of my job. Even with his suggestion, I have never used a tanning bed. I guess I have trouble paying for something that is free. I can get a free tan from the sun if that's what I really want. I have also heard of the risks involved. I don't think anything used excessively can be very good for us. Time will tell just how dangerous they are.

Being a fair-skinned redhead, I do not tan. Even if I visited the tanning bed daily, I would only get red. I too, was at the dermatologist yesterday, and he is having to do a complete peel of my face, chest and lower arms where there are so many little bumps and growths that are from sun exposure. (and no, I have never laid in the sun!) I am sitting here red as a beet and swollen. Next those areas will peel. I have to have this done 3 times to get to the root of all the little growths. He told me that these are from sun exposure years ago. The damage is cummulative over one's life. So despite the fact that I am a neurotic about sunscreen now, the fact that I didn't wear it as a young child, I have damage. (it wasn't invented then...we only had 'suntan lotion'...which was supposed to help one tan!) You better believe that I will now being even more neurotic about sunscreen, if that is even possible!

Absolutely not and I don't have the desire to do so either. It just seems like a huge waste of time, and I'd rather not fry my skin for some sort of fad like tanning. I don't see why tan is such a huge deal anyway, especially those artificial tans that all those people feel like is necessary to be attractive. I like my skin the way it is.

No, i never tried using one.. not that i need tanning bed. I can get my skin darker with no problems at all. A few minutes outside will do just fine. Besides,i got a natural tan. If possible i stay away from the sun so that i won't get any tan at all.

I actually own my own tanning bed. I do not use it that much any more, but I do not feel that they are any worse then baking yourself in the sun. People that have exema are recommended to use tanning beds. I guess each to their own, every thing seems to cause cancer these days, so they say!!!!

I used to use them and so far nothing has happened. I only tanned maybe twice a week. I know there are ladies out there that tan almost daily and are starting to look like leather necks. I am very afraid of skin cancer and I like to have a tan as well. I try to find a happy medium. Most often I do wear a tanning oil with an spf of at least 8, it is some protection from the dangerous rays. It is very important to wear sun screen most often when you are going to be out in the sun for long periods of time. You can still get a tan, it just takes a lot longer. There are also the bronzers, they have come a long way and are much easier to apply and much safer on your skin. So, if you really want a tan, try the bronzing lotions that have come out.

No ~ I've actually never been to one. I have a habit of falling asleep in strange places & I really don't feel like getting my ovaries fried. But I love how people look when they do ~ SUNsational!

NO I never go to those. It's really bad for you. I do enjoy being outside in the summer and swimming. I am tan but I always use sunscreen to block the harmful UV's. I also think that the tan that people get from a tanning bed looks fake. I like for a tan to make you look sun kissed not baked!

No. I don't plan on visiting a tanning bed because of all the risks that have been stated about it.

I have not used a tanning bed nor do I plan to. I cannot tan anyway since I burn more than anything. Plus I do not want to place myself at a greater risk for skin cancer.

i only have been to one about 3-4 times. i burn very easily and i don't understand why i did it in the past. I guess because i was a stupid teenager. I will never go again. the risks aren't worth it and i don't tan anyway.

I've never been to one, and I don't like the fake looking tan that regular users get from going to a tanning bed. I try to do anything I can to keep my skin from aging faster than it should.

I have never used one. I am concerned about the effects but I have this fear that what happens if you get stuck in one and can't get out. It may sound silly but it's just a fear I have. Maybe I watch too many movies...lol.
