Familiarity or variety? choices from the menu

When you go to a restaurant, do you like the comfort that comes from familiar food? i.e. something that you've tried before and know that it tastes good? Or are you adventurous, preferring variety each time you go to a certain restaurant? Personally, I like variety and can spend quite a bit of time enjoying myself looking at the menu, or pictures and deciding which new dish to try. I have a friend who loves eating exactly the same thing at the same restaurant everytime they go. And they don't even need to look at the menu. What's your preference?

that's great! I think I wouldn't like certain foods, esp if they are from mongolia or something. :)

My preference is variety, I like to try out new things everytime. I too like to looked at the menu to checked out the pictures and dishes then figure out which new dish to try out. Even if i've been to the same restaurant many times I will order not the same one I had before but a different dish everytime I eat there.

i like variety but it depends on where we go. if its somewhere new, i usually ask the waiter/waitress for suggestions, or if i know the place i try something new once in awhile!

ummm. I might be the friend you describe. At a couple of my favourite restaurants, I don't even look at the menu to order.

I would say that I prefer to try a new item that is different from the norm as long as it is prepare according to my diet. I'm sort of adventurous on trying new food. But sometimes, looking at the menu or the pix of the food can be very deceiving, so the best is too try them out. I remembered ordering a prawn dish in one of the restaurant when I went to Songkla, Thailand. It looks ugly on the menu but turn out to be very palatable. We even went back to the restaurant the next day to try more of their food in the menu. But there are occasion when we just order the food thinking it will be good by looking at the menu and pix, but the taste sucks. If I knew of any special dish that the particular restaurant serve and I like it, I will always order the same if I patronise them again. So you can say that I'm both of trial and error person and comfortable with my favourite dish if the restaurant do serve one.

It all depends on where I go. Some restaurants offer only limited choices, and so often, I would order the same item if I go to the same restaurant again. If it is a new restaurant, I will look at the menu and order what I prefer to eat. I am not an adventurous person, and so, I would not be the first to try something new... I have being a guinea pig before and ended up discarding the dish simply because it does not suit my tastebuds.

usually i go for the specialty of the house if it's the first time i have been in a particular restaurant, but if restaurants i have been several times in the past i go for my favorite dish.

I go out to eat basically becuase I tire of the same foods. So I choose to go with something different most times. I like adventure and surprises. Now my wife is a stickler as she never tries anything new. When we go out depending on where we are ate I can order for her as she has the same thing everytime. Ugg!! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

that's just like me. that's convenient for you to be able to order for her, and her food probably comes faster than us picky folk.

I spend a lot of time looking at the menu to see if I can find something new and different that looks good. I often end up getting the same thing though. I like to try new foods, but I have to be at least pretty sure that I am going to like it, or else there has to be someone with me that I know will like it if I don't, especially if it is something that is a bit more expensive. I would hate to spend more money on something and then not like it. I would also hate to get something I didn't like, then have to order something else so that I had something to eat that I did like.

For me it depends on where we are dining out. Sometimes I have the usual and add a few ingredients and or change it and the other times I order something completely different. All depends on what I feel like eating at the time. I like the variety too especially if we are dining somewhere new.

i'm kinda adventurous when it comes to food. there's no food that i dislike except all raw food. :D as long as the dish is considered well done in that cusine's standard, i'll love it. there are certain dishes that are must-have when the cravings hit. but most of the time i'll look at the menu and see what catches my fancy. i eat what i feel like at that precise moment. :p

i've stopped eating beef coz it's not environmentally friendly. the amount of carbon waste produced by producing a kg of beef is :o. it's equivalent to driving three hours while leaving all the lights at home switched on. sashimi is a no no coz i didn't enjoy the taste that much. so why waste the money on something i don't enjoy? i'd rather take the money and spend it on a good tempura or shabu shabu. have you tried the shabu shabu at cuppage plaza? it's really good and the ponzu is to die for. talking about it makes me hungry liao. :D

I like the comfort of familiarity. If I'm going to a restaurant where I go often or they have something on the menu that I really like, I will almost order that. Today I met a friend for lunch at PF Chang's and he was laughing at me because I always order beef lo mein when we go there. I order it every time. He always orders something different but when I get a craving for beef lo mein I have to go to PF Chang's. I don't know why it bothers him so much. Most of the time I only glance at the menu to make sure it's still on there and then I close it. If it's a new restaurant that I've never been to I will look at the whole menu to see what catches my eye.

I like to try something different. I would only eat the same thing if what's on the menu has ingredients I do not like.

I usually spend quite a bit of time looking at the menu too. If there are some items I really like, I might have them most of the time. But occasionally if I can resist, I would want to try something new too. Having too much of something good may be boring too.:P

I would say I am a mixture of both the adventurous and the conservative. Most of the time, I go to the restaurant that I am familiar with, is to satisfy my craving for that something nice that I have tried before. There are days where I would try other stuff on the menu, but always with a side of what I originally came for when sitting down at my favorite restaurant. Unless of course, the place I go to is new, I will then look at what the other tables are ordering before making my choice. If the food is good, then it will go into my book for a second attempt at the other foods... else, no way would I go back to torture my palate. ;)
