I hated meatloaf when I was a kid!

When I was a kid, I hated meatloaf, but now it's one of my favorite dishes. Same goes for collard greens, salads, and lima beans. And, I couldn't stand black eyed peas, rice and corn bread. But, now it's a home cooking Southern favorite that you'll find on my table at least once a week. Isn't it funny how dishes that disgusted you as a child can suddenly become your favorites, when you hit adulthood? So, which dishes did you hate as a child, but love eating now? Did you hate certain fruits or vegetables, but now find it hard to live without? Do you remember arguing with your mom over not wanting to eat those dishes when you were a kid?

Many food items I hated and would not try as a child- A lot of veggies- Tomatoes being the top one- Now I can’t get enough of them- I love them fresh from the garden. Brussels sprouts- same thing now – love them Zucchini and squash- hated them and now love them. I used to be able to eat deer meat in sausage as a child- and deer jerky- now the thought of it sickens me- so it goes both ways

I have always been pretty picky about what foods I will eat. The only food that I can think of that I didn't like when I was a little kid, that I eat now is macaroni and cheese. But I still don't eat the kind with the powdered cheese, so maybe that doesn't count. lol I did like rice less when I was little, but I ate it. Now I love it and eat it at least a couple of times a week. Most things that I didn't like when I was little, I still don't like. I can't stand green beans or spinach. I hate anything on sandwiches that might make the bread soggy, etc. I liked eggs when I was little, though, and can't eat them now. They make me feel sick now.

My childhood aversion were tomatoes, mushrooms, and after my mother married a Texan, his mother ate boiled okra which to this day I still refuse to even try. I'll have them fried, but I've seen them boiled and I'm not putting that in my digestive system. Mushrooms were the first to be accepted - I probably got my cue from my big sister who didn't want to eat them, but my step-father had me try them (I was probably ten or eleven), and I've been a culinary daredevil ever since. Except for boiled okra. Tomatoes came much later but I still will not eat them plain - they have to be in a sandwich or a salad to accompany other things in my mouth while I'm chewing.

Funny thing is I loved meatloaf as a kid.. here's the catch.. it had to be raw. Yep I would eat the meat, eggs as raw as can be, I hated it cooked. I know it sounds gross and it grosses me out too now but I remember absolutely loving it and couldn't get enough of it as a kid. Mom would mix extra for me and put a big chunk in the fridge for me so there would be enough to put into a loaf pan for the rest of the family. The only thing I can figure out is I was anemic as a kid. The raw meat must have satisfied some kind of biological craving for iron. It's just truly amazing that I never got sick from eating all that raw meat mixed with raw eggs back then. Nowdays I'd probably get some kind of awful food poisoning and die. I ate a lot of weird stuff when I was a kid though. There was a guy down the street that would have all the kids in the neighorhood hunting for grasshoppers during the summer and he'd throw them on the barbeque grill and we'd chow down on bbq'd grasshoppers. Ate them like popcorn... ok I know I'm weird.. LOL. No I don't do it anymore. :D

I used to really dislike tomatoes, but now I really like them - I even eat tomato sandwiches quite often.
