Wattle Bird Nests in our Carport

Wattle Bird - A wattle bird is a native of Australia. This one is very similar to the mother bird that nests in our carport.

Last year a Wattle Bird nested in our carport. She choose a crate full of camping kitchen equipment for her nest. When the eggs hatched, a rat got to them & ate the babies. Later, the mother Wattle bird made another nest in exactly the same spot. Just as well we hadn't planned on camping at the time. Previously we had laid down rat baits, but one of our cats caught a rat anyway. The eggs hatched & little birdies could be heard cheaping. A few days later hubby decided to climb up & look at the babies. Tragedy struck. In fright, the baby birds flew up & careered off. They couldn't fly properly. One of dogs caught one & killed it. The others got away, but they wouldn't have survived, as they were too young.. A few weeks later, we spotted aattle bird in our carport again. It appeared to be injured. The next day we found it dead on the ground, caught by the dogs.. Out of the blue, a Wattle bird came to our carport again a few weeks ago. We presume it is the same Mother. The dead one must have been another, maybe it's mate. This time the mother bird has made her nest on top of my hubbys stereo speakers! There are three eggs, & hopefully no rats around. Hubby found out that Wattle birds love watermelon, so he has asked me to buy some tomorrow. I have attached a photo of a attle bird.

It looks like a member of the dove family. Is that correct? I'd say try not to disturb the nest this time. I would love to see a photo of the one in your carport actually. It does sound like mamma wattle is very determined to have babies in your carport as oppsoed to elsewhere. Leave it be and set out some watermelon chunks for them is all. Keep away from the nest if possible. Good luck and keep us informed. Rated & commented as well. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I am fairly sure that Dave has a photo of the three eggs. I will get it loaded on the computer. I bought the watermelon & Dave can leave a bit out for her. I agree, keep away for the Mother & babies this time.

I hope they are able to have their babies in piece this time. I can't believe it keeps coming back.

I don't think we get these birds in the U.K. its a shame if they don't survive, but with 3 eggs perhaps at least 1 will. Hope they really do like watermellon.

They may have got their namr from the Wattle Tree, which is common in Australia. We have a wattle tree in our front yard. The Wattle birds eggs have hatched now, & we can hear them cheaping.
