Does anyone NOT like onion???

My husband really doesn't like onion, with a passion. He knows even when I cut it up really finely and cook it well that I have added it. We have been together now for 6 years and I am really missing onion in my foods and recipes. I use alot of garlic but don't like the smell I know is coming out of my pores in the following days - ewww. So is there anyone else here who really can't stomach onion? Or someone else who has a family member who really loathes onions too? What do you do to disguise the onion or what do you add instead? Any recipe ideas?

Maybe try some onion powder or dehydrated onions? The dehydrated don't have the same texture when they're reconstituted. I don't like raw onions, but I love cooked onions. I was married to someone years ago who is allergic to peppers and onions which was difficult. I couldn't put them in anything I cooked.

It'll be in the spice section. Sometimes it's listed as onion flakes.

Me and my family really like onions because it is a rich source of nutrients, including vitamins B, C, and G, protein, starch and a series of essential elements. The chemicals contained in onions are reported to be effective agents against fungal and bacterial growth; they protect against stomach, colon and skin cancers; they have anti-inflammatory, antiallergenic, antiasthmatic and antidibetic actions; and they treat causes of cardiovascular disorders, including hypertension, hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia while also inhibiting platelet aggregation. Our family has history of diabetic, hypertension and cancers that why we eat the foods that we know are good against those diseases. It better to prevent than to cure.

Oh that is interesting information - thank you very much! I now will HAVE to make sure myself and my children get all the onion nutrients even if hubby really cant stomach it. Will have to find out which other foods are high in these nutrients so he isn't missing out on them in his diet. I never knew onions were so good for you - just knew that they were yummy!

When I first got married my b=husband complained and complained sbout my cooking. He thought I used way to much onion and garlic in it. I just began adding a tiny bit and cut so small that he didnt know it was there. He caught me a few times but he would be amazed how much onion he eats now.

Yes well I try to trick hubby but he always knows! He doesn't mind as much if I just add a little - I buy pickling onions instead of normal sized onions and use them instead if I really can't go without onions. He eats the first mouthful and smiles at me 'I know there is onion in here, but it is still nice food!'- cheeky man! I am glad you have been able to trick your hubby - big meanie I am haha - maybe if you keep feeding it to him he will get subconsiously used to it and end up liking it in the end - we can only hope!

I love onions and we have plenty of it because we are producing it. We use it in cooking, garnishing salads and even ate it fresh. It may smell and taste somewhat but it gives a pleasant aroma when cooked. It also used as medicine.

Well that sounds very interesting, I would like to know how to medically use it, what ailments is it used for and how do you use it? I have heard of the health benefits for garlic but not for onion. I agree cooking/ed onion is very aromatic - yum! Nothing like onion cooking on a BBQ mmm

Nope i love opinions. Yeah i have a family member who hates onions and he made everyone very aware of his opinions! What about adding the onion just to yours? Like add it to your plate(s) of food. Or maybe you could get your husband to compromise. You eat something he doesnt like and he eats onions. Its worthy a try, maybe he'll do it.

Yes this is true, compromise is the key. See I think I am already compromising - I cook the meals so I get to choose what I cook .... right? haha - cheeky me! Hrmm it seems the onion-haters are opinionated people.... maybe they in fact need onion to make them less opinionated! Or maybe they are just showing their fussy side!

I am the person that doesn't like onion in my relationship. I have found a couple of methods that work well for me. Depending on whether your husband can handle the flavor as an enhancement to the food but just doesn't like the taste of the onion itself... Dried Onions are not as bad as fresh. The taste is milder than fresh, so that helps. Another way would be to cut the onions in big chunks that would be easy to remove from a plate. That way you could get the flavor of the onion in your food, but be able to pull out the offending vegetable before he sees it on his plate. One other way I have found to appease my husband is to cook the onions on the side either with a little juices from meat if that is what you are cooking or in an oil (sauteed) or however you are preparing the food. That way those that want the onion can add them to their food if they choose to. Doesn't always work, but at least some of the time, you can work it in and enjoy.

I am guessing that dried is the same as dehydrated? My poor hubby doesn't like onion taste at all... so I am thinking that I am going to have to cook my onion seperately and then just add to my dish at serving time. Thanks for your ideas :)

Can't relate. I don't know if there's any replacement for onions, although onion powder could work. I love onions and garlic and I don't care what others think. I just bathe a lot, use mouthwash a lot, use perfume, and continue on my merry way.

I didn't think of onion powder - somehow I think that hubby will think it tastes too much like onion for his liking! Unless you mean to sprinkle on my dish - now theres an idea!

Me, I don't like onion. Your case is totally different with my case. My husband loves onion, he can eat raw onion. I even can not smell of onion. I hate to cut onion, smell onion, and eat onion. I can not tell you why but I don't like the smell. That's all. Even my husband encourage me a lot that onion is all kind of good for health, but I'm deaf about that. I still use onion for cooking on my husband dishes, and i cook my dishes without onion. So it is fine so far.

Hrmm yeah, I should probably just cook two meals, one with onion for me and the other without for him.... but I am already cooking two meals (one for the kids and one for the adults) already. In the morning it sounds like such a great idea but as the day wears on I don't think I can be bothered cooking three 'dinners' and washing up all those pots and pans - how lazy of me! Well I am glad that my hubby is not the only one with the onion dislike!

I will only eat onions if they are cut pretty small and then fried, until they are really done. I want them to be completely translucent. I even fry them first before I put them in something that is going in the oven. My husband thinks it's crazy, but when they are just cooked in the oven, they come out crunchy and still have too much flavor left. I don't like that.

I love onion and have kids who just see it as a vegetable. So to sneak the onion into food, I put the onion in the food processor. By the time it comes out, it is almost a pulp. Then I mix it with other flavors such as garlic and mushrooms. Since onion isn't part of a daily meal, I make a hoagie sandwhich for lunch and add some onion to my sandwhich. Also if I want the onion flavor, but using onion isn't an option, I use onion powder or onion salt

Hrmm I hadn't thought of mixing the onion pulp with the garlic before frying it - that might be a more palatable taste for hubby! thanks :)

I hate onions. I can't eat onion. Fortunately, I'm 18 and still live with my parents, so my mom knows me and doesn't use too much onion in my food. But I have a really hard time everytime I go somewhere else, because most people love onion. For example, I went to my grandma's house and we ate pizza. But I almost didn't eat because she adds onions to the sauce. BTW, my brother and sisters aren't big fans of onions either.

Hrmm yes, it does make it harder when you go out - we order chinese food without onion and pizza's without onion - hubby even orders maccas without onions - now I am not even sure their onions even taste like onion, well I guess they do as much as their cheese tastes like cheese1 - but thats another story! Glad to know we aren't the only family where someone detests onion with a passion1

Well this certainly takes things a bit too far. Cooked onion doest smell at all but adds thickness and consistency to the gravy you are cooking. I am fond of my onions and can eat it any way…raw in salad, inside sandwiches, as an accompaniment to savouries or cooked in my gravy. Though my mouth smells after eating raw onion, but I just can’t resist its flavour!

My son, he just cannot stand onions. But I am very clever, I grind them into paste and add to his food and he does not find it out and eats his food, but if the size is a bit bigger and he sees it , then there is a big noisy atmosphere till he cools down, but I still keep trying because onion has its own benefits, specially for astama, and my son does have a little effect of astma, though not severe.

I neither like nor hate onion. Though my mother always told me it's good for healthy. I found a lot of Southern Chinese don't like onion for its smell. Once I always had LanZhou Lamian as lunch with my colleagues, one of the popular food in China now, for about a few months. And the boss was so good and he always cooked the noodles with a lot of onion. After a few months, I found my stomach can't fit for onion. So I seldom eat onion now. In addition, Southern Chinese alway cooked onion as a dish, and they don't think onion is a kind of spices.

My husband and I both really enjoy onions in our food. Everything that can have onion in it does have onion in it. We have 17 grandchildren that come over to visit. Several of them do not like onions in any shape or form. Some like the flavor of onion, but not the feel of the onion pieces in their mouth. For these times, I use powdwered onion to their food. A few of them like onion, but want them cut up in very fine pieces, so these I put in the food processor and chop fine. There are a couple that will eat an onion like an apple, like their grandfather. They add a little salt to it and munch away. Sometimes, on a very busy day, I will forget who likes what and just cook as if no one extra is there, and the food gets picked through, onions removed, and food eaten anyway. For people that do not feeling the onion in their mouth, or the smell of an onion, I recommend using the onion powder for the flavor. That is if you like the flavor of onion.

My son hates onion, or so he says. Little does he know he eats onion several times a week.. I love onions. I love to peel them, cut them in half and put them in a foil packet with some butter, salt, and pepper and toss it on the grill. My sister will only eat them if they are cut up really small and cooked.
