Have you ever forgotten to pay your rent or house payment on time?

Today my rent was due, and early this morning I remembered it. But it's easy for me to forget. One time around 11:30pm on the day it was due, I remembered and ran myself over to the office where I could slip the payment into the slot. Nothing happened. But have you done that before and there WERE consequences? Did you forget to send it in, or did you think your spouse had already done it? What happened?

I have my rent come out of my account automatically each month..However, speaking as a mortgage consultant if a homeowner failed to make payments on there mortgage then there home just like an apartment can be taken back. Also to mention that when u are late it can go on your credit report and lower your credit rating alot and the derogatories stay on your credit for 7 years.

With a morgage once your payments hits 90 days late a lender can start the foreclosure process. For all my borrowers that I deal that are deliquent on there mortgage I and that I can't help I advise them to call there mortgage lender. Most lenders offer a program that will allows you to put the payments that u are behind in a repayment plan called a forbearence plan. Most lenders will work with you if call rather then having to go threw the process of foreclosure.

It takes more than a month before things can foreclosed though right? I was aware of all that, but was pretty sure you had to be late more than one time. I don't want to be late at ALL, but you know, I bet a lot of mylotters don't know most of what you just posted. Five or six years ago I wouldn't have known either.

I am lucky that I get it automatically withdrawn from my bank account on the same exact day I have an automatically deposited amount. So I don't really have to think about it at all. Auto in and out on the same day and I don't have to do a darn thing. Cool one less thing on my very long list of things to pay for GRRR. LOL Vicki

My apartment manager doesn't let us do that, but that's OK. I'd be paranoid they'd charge me twice or something. : )

Hi AmbiePam, I've forgotten my mortgage payment on a couple of occasions. It's best to have automatic deductions from your bank account when you can, but sometimes it just doesn't work. I once had the money tucked away in an envelope for over a week, until I got a call about the overdue account. I can't blame my wife for this one, as it's something that I always take care of. I've started making notes on my calender. Blessings friend.

I know..automatic deductions can sometimes backfire on a person..they are handy in one sense, but if you forget to put the money in to cover the deductions,...well, one has a problem..right?? :(

Hi Ambie, Im pretty lucky here, my landlord comes to pick it up. Now its due on the Frist day of the month, but there is this tenant who lives in the back apartments who she allows to call her when he has it, and she will come and get it. Im not sure why she likes this guy so much...lol hes ok but still, the rent is due on the first for other tenants, why is he so special. Im by no means complaining, lol I always have the rent on the first, and it sits in the drawer until she comes and gets it. Her offering when we moved in, I accepted! So there is no way I could ever be late with it, and sometimes I have to call her and say "hey you know are you coming to get it? Do you want me to mail it to you?" lol She will laugh and say "no Im coming round to get it". This is the neighbor of mine that was peeking in our front door the other morning, I started a discussion about it "Do you have the rigth to look" lol For whatever reason, my landlord really likes him. Bay xx

LOL I know!! The whole situation is weird, but thats how it works around here. Its really hard when Im low on money too, I have to fight the urge to dip in it and use some of it at times. lol I tell her this too, if she takes too long, some months I just might be short when she comes. I just never know though, so I leave it alone. I dont like getting behind on things to begin with. Bay xx

I haven't had this happen: My roommate usually remembered if I forgot. And right now, our rent is on automatic withdrawal on the first of every month, so we can't forget it.

I forgot to pay my rent on time about 8 years ago and I had to pay a late penalty fee, but that was it. I have our mortgage automatically withdrawn each month to help with the payments being on time.

I pay my house payment on the same day each month. I do it online. If it gets paid on the exact same day each month, it doesn't screw up the interest. I have a basket on my counter with all my bills in it. They are put in the basket according to the date I need to get them paid. Usually on the first of the month, I go threw and add all my bills for the month and with my online banking I can put in the dates that they need to be paid. I think that if you do pay your bills late that you get a fee added on. I know for most bills it will say right on there if paid after a certain date it is X amount added.

Yes, I see that on my electric bill every month. Fortunately I've never been late on any payments, and I'm glad.

It's not so much that I forget about the rent, but it just might be late getting in due to some bizarre circumstance..like when my benefits were terminated...I was able to pay half the rent then (this was back in May), with the idea that I should be able to make up for it and pay it next month..I was nearly having panic attacks as time kept slipping by without my benefits being reinstated...until they were on June 1st--if they hadn't I was willing to wait until about June 15th to then call up the landlord and explain the problem..thank goodness I didn't have to. In fact, back then I didn't tell anyone in the building I was having money problems...The only people I told were my close friends and I had done discussions here about my fiasco ...Just last month I was a little short on the rent money again, but was able to make up for it about two weeks later in September...Both times back in May and last month, I slipped a letter with the rent money to say I would make up for the difference the following month...so nothing happened Thank God!!

My husband and I almost have our house finished and I am nervous about the payments. I wouldn't forget to make the payment though. I'm too paranoid. I'm really good with bills, but my husband is horrible with that stuff and I end up managing the money and paying everything.

Yeah, it's better to handle it all ourselves than worry about someone else keeping track.

I have an apartment on campus offered by my school. Every month our rent for the apartment and electricity and water is deducted from our salary. So I don't have to worry about forgetting about paying for the rent. As to my own apartment in my hometown, we don't have to pay any rent for it because we have bought it already and it is our own property. What we have to pay is the water fee, electricity fee, phone fee and TV fee. My wife pays the rent on time each month.

I have a different situation. My landlord comes home once in 2 or 3 months and collects the rent. As such, I always pay it late. But he doesn't care. Our rentals are more than what he earns by other means and hence he puts up with it. He even gives us Royal treatment.

No, I can't say that this has ever happened to me. There have been times when I have intentionally not paid when I was young and reckless. But, I could never honestly say that I forgot.

Hi AmbiePam, Our Landlord lives right upstairs from us so I could never forget to give them rent lol. The first has been on a weekend sometimes though and once instead of getting it the Friday I forgot and it was a day or two late, but the Landlord understood as I didn't make a habbit out of it. I am usually pretty good with stuff like that! Love & Hugzz, Your Friend, PurpleTeddyBear

Hi AmbiePam, no, we haven't as it is written monthly automatically from our bank account, the mortgage payments, and many years before that it was the same with the rent. Certain things should be done automatically so that we cannot forget, and this is one of these, the others are electricity, gaz and water, and the phone and Internet. TheFortunes
