Recall After Recall

I don't know about everyone else, but there seems to be an ugly pattern developing recently. I can't turn on my TV or radio any more without hearing about some recall or other. Today I have heard of two: Cold medicines for babies and young children, and Banquet Pot Pies. All of this seems to stem from a much larger problem that we are currently facing. We should all be asking ourselves, "Who's minding the store?" I know that mistakes are made and an occasional recall is to be expected, but this is ridiculous. I am worried over this situation that I question all of the food items I purchase now. I long ago began questioning the medications. Sadle, we are living in a world where nothing can be assumed to be safe anymore.

I didn't hear about the pot pies, but I did hear about the cold medicines for babies and young children--I thank my lucky stars that 99 percent of the time I make all my own meals..no short cuts, all from scratch...but even our so called fresh food is recalled like spinach and lettuce. I was just watching one of those late night shows..and they were kind of making a joke about the recalled cough medicine...in a sarcastic way...they showed how to make homemade cough syrup...a small part Cool Aid, a small part Maple Syrup and the rest Vodka...so yes, a chuckle there...but gee, maybe we DO have to go back and rely on home made cures and remedies..seemed to have worked for my great-grandmother and she lived to be 98!

This is most readily available for ppl in the souther us states, but a great homemade cough remedy is dr pepper syrup warmed up with a slice of lemon squeezed in, its good for upset stomaches too.

Having grown up in the south, pyewacket, I am familiar with many home remedies that actually worked. They were used on me and some I used on my children with no ill effects. Like I said before, we have reached a point where we need to take our care into our own hands, and that means some people will even have to learn to cook, lol. Most impurities that come in foods can be combated by thorough cooking. The rest we will have to pray over.

The cold medicine is being pulled from the shelf by the makers voluntarily because parents are giving the children too much. But the rest of the itmes are becoming ridiculous. It is crazy that this is happening. We should be more careful about the things that go out to the public. Especially with cribs and items that are intended for children.

although I do respect the fact that they are pulling the med voluntarily, I still hold that regardless of weather or not parents were giving their children too much, the companies were making them too strong.

Naturally, tammytwo, they are going to bear as little of the blame as possible. Most mothers that I know follow the directions on the labels religiously when they are dosing their children. I don't for one minute believe that mothers have become so careless that they will deliberately overdose their own kids.

A couple of days ago, I heard that a brand of toothpaste at one of the dollar stores contained antifreeze! Our food is contaminated, toys come with lead paint to poison our children and even the medications to make us well, will make us sicker or worse! This epidemic can be pointed right back at the manufacturer's who have chosen to move their plants out of our country. I'm not in favor of importing all our products. Even some of the "trusted brands" have labels indicating that the product was made overseas. One of the main reasons that so many CEO's decided to take the manufacturing out of our country was to get away from all the rules and safeguards we have here in the U.S. to try and keep our products as safe as possible. Getting away from the FDA and OSHA and environmental laws may save them a ton of bucks to pass on to the stockholders, but it has been proven that the general consumer does NOT save that much more money, especially with the risks attached. I suggest that we start watching the labels even more carefully and refuse to buy brands made overseas. When it comes to our children, we must put our foot down. Perhaps we can have a homemade Christmas this year! Give your loved ones something made with your own hands and heart.

Just like you said though read the lables. Some of the "trustes brands" that you are reffering to include companies such as Herseys. Now I dont know, Ill have to go to some specialty store to buy just baking chocolate, its nuts!! (no pun intended, lol)

Yes, surfette, we must all be more vigilant when purchasing anything from now on. If the institutions that were put in place to safeguard our health have fallen down on the job, then we have to oversee our own safety. What you suggest is a very good idea-no more purchasing of foreign-made products. Maybe that will send a message to these companies.

I'm finding this kind of scary too. I had always thought that everything was carefully tested, and of course some things will come up that weren't thought of, or only became problems after a lot of use, or something, but this seems like a lot, lately.

I'm thinking it will only get worse, cutepenguin. There is a lack of love for ones fellowman and a lack of respect for human life that is steadily growing. We must all look out for ourselves.

It is getting to the point that I can no longer remember what I'm supposed to buy and what I'm not supposed to buy. Everytime I turn around I hear of another recall. I think my Dad has the right idea...he grows all of their own fruits and veggies and butchers his own meats. They actually buy very few things from the store. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

That is the type of environment I grew up in, twoey. We had a small farm and raised chickens and a few hogs. We also had a nice garden, and my aunt canned vegetables and fruit every summer to have plenty for the winter. We bought very little from the stores.

The best thing for all of us to do, 3lilangels, is to be vigilant and check everything as if we are the inspectors. Many times when products are tainted there will be something about them that doesn't look right.

I just received a notice in the mail from Honda that my Honda Fit and other Fits have been recalled due to a safety defect in the passenger side airbags caused by wetness from a drivers foot that gets on the carpeting. I will be taking my car next saturday to have the work done. It was surprising that there was a recall with Honda as they have safe cars but you never know when a car or other product might go wrong.

There are millions of products in the world and the vast majority are safe. So a few items are being recalled and everyone goes off the cliff. Why is it that we over-react to the few and fail to see the many that are just fine? Is it human nature or are we taught to look for the negative first and live in fear? Why waste precious time worrying about anything?

I guess "everyone goes off the cliff" because a "few items" are being recalled because one of us could buy one of the few items and be one of the very unfortunate few who end up being harmed or KILLED by it! It's touching every aspect of our lives from medicine, toothpaste and lipstick with lead in it to fresh vegetables and frozen foods to toys. The number of items being recalled is rising dramatically and it is something to be very upset about. Annie

I have to disagree with you on this, sigma, because the number of recalls are steadily increasing. This was not happening even a few years ago. I will not put blind faith in these tainted products that are becoming the rule rather than the exception.

Worldwise I completely understand where you are coming from! I have voiced the exact same sentiments this week to my hubby. Started with the pet food recalls, and just today we were checking out the dry cat foods again, our tomkitty has been throwing up his dry food again. I have the banquet pot pies in my freezer that are also under the recall, now I've got to go to the trouble of taking them back to the store, wallyworld naturally! And the TOYS!! Toothpaste, I don't want to buy another thing that was made in Japan, China or the orient anywhere. These jobs should be in our own country, you get what you pay for!! And don't tell me that with what Mattell and Conagra and all these other companies charge US for all these recalled items, that they can't afford to pay more for the labor. It's ridiculous and something needs to be done. You know it's not just what's going on now, but years down the road, how many of our children will be developing cancers and other bad health injuries b/c they wanted cheap child labor. Exactly, WHO is minding the store? Great and much needed discussion my friend !!

I am seriously beginning to think that the only safe foods are now the fresh foods from the farm shop, and I am less inclined to buy processed or pre-prepared convenience foods now, I would rather cook meals from scratch and be certain exactly what has gone into the foods we eat.

We sure can't assume anything to be safe anymore and it's a darn shame. It's not as if we didn't have government agencies who are supposed to be looking out for us! I'm definitely paying close attention to where a product was made but that doesn't solve the problem when it comes to the vast majority of the food recalls. It's impossible to know what is safe to get and what could kill you...I don't mean to be overly dramatic here, but it's the truth. Annie

I agree. With the holidays coming up, I dont want to buy my kids any toys, because of all the recalls. We will probobly do arts and crafts stuff instead. I stopped buying premade foods after the spinache thing last year, thank goodness. But I still triple wash everything, even meats I let soak to get all the blood out because I dont know whats in the food anymore. And really its not a big suprise about the cold medicines for children. I have know that they have been overdoing it with that medicine for a few years now. I was out of some cough meds when I had a cold one day and so I took the recomended dosage for a 6yr old of some childrens cough syrup that I had for my son and it knocked me out for almost 5 hours. What the heck! And thats not the only medicine that they make super strong, others are just less "harmful" but take orajel for example. Baby orajel is stronger that the adult maximum strength, found that out when my wisdom teeth came in inpacted. I think that the FDA itself needs to be reevaluated, because they are not taking the time to keep the people safe anymore.

I think we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg, lanfear, because with all the new scares coming out on a daily basis we have to assume that there are many more products that place us at risk on the market. I used to be leery of eating from fast-food restaurants, but I never thought the day would come when I could not trust the products I get from the grocery store.

We are doing a toy free holiday this year for Christmas because of all of the recalls. It's very scary that they just can't seem to get a handle on this situation. It should be a no brainer that lead and kids do not mix. I don't think they should even allow these toys to get into the country if they are made in a way that could be dangerous. Food is another thing that I'm very worried about it seems like every week there is another bunch of recalls and it makes me worry everytime I pick something up at the grocery store that this one will be recalled. I went to the meat department this week and just stood there going over the list in my mind of what had been recalled recently. I settled on pork chops since I couldn't think of any recalls for pork recently. We try to use as little medications as possible anyway so that is one area that I'm not as concerned about for our family. It does worry me for all of the people who are on numerous meds. It seems like they have a pill for everything these days. I just don't understand why there aren't higher standards and why the companies aren't held up to these standards. Hopefully toy sales will be low enough this year that they will get the hint that we aren't going to just sit around and let them poison our children. Good topic!
