What is the average income of writers

United States

Ok, here is a question that I am looking for an answer to. What is the average income (salary) of writers? And what are the general working conditions (hours worked and at what)? I know that these figures are collected by at least one group (government or is it guild) because a few years ago I saw a set. But for the life of me, I can't figure out who or where--so I am having a hard time locating actual numbers that would be acceptable to my microeconomics teacher (he likes to know the original source). Any help would be helpful. Thank you. Now I off to continue hacking around at homework.

Average income of writers? That surely is something that i cannot speculate. but i know that it is really a very reasonable amount. Books are becoming very popular, many are buying them, so their income would definitely raise to a great extent though i am not able to say in any amount terms.

I've heard it's about $25,000 a year, but I don't really know. It depends on what type of writing the person is doing. Is it journalism/writing for newspapers & periodicals? Is it writing novels? Or poetry? Or is it professional writing? You can probably find out in a book geared toward how to write professionally. It's been awhile since I read one, but they usually include it in those books.

I don't really see how there could be any set of figures that would be accurate or useful. Most writers work for themselves, and probably don't keep track of hours. And it's known that the majority of writers make very little and don't write for a living. The only statistics that would be possible is if they're limited to writers who work for companies that pay them for set amounts of work and set hours.

I can't figure this out too. But I would love to learn the average too. It is a very helpful idea for others to know, specially those who love writing. Some professional writers must be earning a lot, while others are not that much. It can also depend of the publication where the writers are writing for.
