Cocoa? Hot Chocolate? How do you like it? What do you call it?

I call it both. I like Swiss Miss hot cocoa or any of the mixes that come in a little packet. A couple of years ago, I decided I wanted to try a more home made version so I looked up some recipes and tried a few variations. My conclusion? They're ALL good! Anything with chocolate is GOOD. lol Do you have a favorite hot cocoa recipe or brand? I've heard that some people use condensed milk as a sweetener intead of sugar. I think I had some made that way once. It was good. Do you put marshmallows or whipped cream on top? Winter is coming (i live in Miami). I imagine for most of you, it's already there. Do you look forward to your cocoa in the winter months?

Oh yes, I like the hot cocoa during the winter months, and with the marshmallows, I especially like cuddling up near a log fire, and just letting the warmth soak into my body! Are you familiar with the version of homemade cocoa, and they put a touch of cinnammon in it?

Neither. Here's my favorite hot chocolate. And from other friends family and etc it's the best ever. Take a regular sized 3 Muskateers candy bar. Freeze it solid. Boil a cup of water. Break the candy into small pieces while it's in the wrapper by slamming it against the countertop. Add tro the water and mix completely. The best hot chocolate ever. Try it. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Just one bar is all. It's plenty rich as it is. Just water not milk. Milk makes it too gunky tasting. There's enough dairy in the candy as it is. HAHAHA!! The whipped chocolate and whipped creme is plenty rich and that's what makes it so good. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I call it cocoa and I like to put marshmellows in it. I dont really have a favorite one though. Here in Houston it is not always cold enough to make me want to drink cocoa. Last winter we actually had a light freeze which we rarely have here.

Hi Miami, I've already had about four cups of hot chocolate/cocoa this year! In the last week actually. lol I call it both too, but mostly hot chocolate. Hubby likes it too so in the winter we do drink a lot of it. I havent had cool whip in mine yet, I've been using marshmellows to sweeten mine. I dont use a packet or any special recipe really. I use a half milk half water mixture with some powdered Nestle Quick. I've been known to make chocolate milk and then heat it up in the microwave too. Only if I'm in a hurry though and dont feel like waiting for the milk to heat up on the stove top. Cant just put some full fledge flame to your milk it will scald in the pan so you have to heat it slowly. lol I dont like to heat it to where it gets that film over the top. Yuck! lol So thats how I make hot chocolate or cocoa if you please! :) Bay Lay Gray xx

We used to boil the milk and then scoop the film off before we added the chocolate. More recently I've done the milk in the microwave then adding the Nesquick (formerly know as Nestles Quick) As I said, I like any form of chocolate or cocoa and milk.

I found that adding a little bit of water too it keeps the film down, and plus I swirl it around in the pan not letting it just sit over the heat. lol The art of making hot chocolate! Oh yea, it is called that now isn't it!? I don't pay attention, I just know its the yellow container with the bunny on it. If they ever changed it, I'd be in trouble! LOL Bay xx

Paula Dean had a recipe involving some type of peach hot chocolate. It looked pretty interesting. But Rachel Ray made a hot chocolate with a heath bar. Yummm that sounds good.

I love a nice hot chocolate before I go to bed, but I don't like it with milk, I find it too creamy and sickly, I always make my chocolate from an instant jar and make it with hot water, I don't add anything to it because it is sweet enough. Throughout the day I have coffee, but at night I have chocolate otherwise I can't sleep. It also warms me up inside especially at this time of the year when it's cold and damp.

I don't have a home made recipe, but Swiss miss is really good. I'm such a chocolate addict that I put two packs in a 8 or 12 oz cup...and add some mini mellows...it's soooo goood!

Well here in Philippines we got a recipe where we used cocoa... it is usually prepared during the colder times or rainy days. We add cocoa powder to the pooridge we are making. It is then served with milk. I usually like it with powder milk and its best eaten when still warm.

I actually call it both hot chocolate and hot cocoa, depending on my mood. I'm more likely to call it cocoa if it's powdered though. I've been known (occasionally) to actually melt down chocolate in cream with some sugar and vanilla -- that I call hot chocolate every time. My mom used to make hot cocoa mix every year. I don't remember much of the recipe, except that it involved quik powder, powdered milk and coffeemate. It was SOOOO good. SO much creamier and chocolatier than the packaged powder. I love the powdered stuff with marshmallows or whipped cream. When it's made with chocolate, only whipped cream will do.

We use the mixes here too. I usually just add my own stuff to them. I don't drink much hot chocolate but my husband loves it! I like it but it always gives me a stomach ache. He likes whipped cream on top of his. I chop up half a Hershey bar and melt it in a sauce pan, then I add a little milk and stir until it mixes together. Then I add water and a couple of packets of mix. You will want to add more water than the mix call for. The extra chocolate makes this very rich. When everything is at a low boil, I add a scoop of French Vanilla ice cream. Let it melt and stir it altogther. Now it is ready to pour into mugs. Add a dollop of whipped cream on top. Yum!

For some reason I always call it Hot Chocolate. I guess to me it sounds better than hot cocoa. Or maybe it's just a habbit...I've never really thought about why I call it hot chocolate instead of cocoa. I like mine with marshmallows in it. I just use the packets of hot chocolate. Maybe I will look for some recipes this evening. I never thought about looking for different ways to make it until I read your discussion. Have a great day.

I call it Hot Chocolate ..but about 23-24 years ago, I stayed at a hotel in England that looked out at the WInchester Catherdral and they had the absolute best instant hot chocolate I have ever had. It was thick like it was made with cream. It was so good. Affirmative on the marshmallows and whip cream.

My favorite is Nestle. I like to have a cup at bedtime in the cold months of the year. I don't need the marshmellows, but I like what they put on top of the hot chocolate at Starbucks.

Here in Oz, they are 2 different things because cocoa is cocoa - if you eat it, it's yukky & bitter, hot chocolate on the other hand is usually made from chocolate :) (so the cocoa has already be turned in to chocolate & then it's been dried & crushed i assume) - if you eat the chocolate powders that make the hot chocolate it's sweet! I love to use Milo or Nesquik (not sure if you have them there or not), but the best one i have found is called Cadbury Velvet - it's like block chocolate that has been grated - to look at it, it's just little curls of chocolate - throw in some hot milk & sugar (if it'd not already sweet enough) & i love to put a little extra on top so it melts on the top & then eat it off! Marshmallows are ok sometimes but i haven't really known many people here to use marshmallows as much as TV & stuff show you guys use them. But yeah, no cocoa for me, it has to be chocolate powder type stuff & you have to use hot milk - i don't like it with hot water!

I usually call it hot chocolate. I will add some skim milk to it. I used to use marshmallows and condensed milk but now I try to be more careful. But sometimes I will make it really sweet with all the fixings as a treat. We love it after an afternoon of skating in the winter.
