Gleeful Storm Forecast

The top story on our local newscast this evening has been about the storm predicted to arrive sometime later tonight. The one thought that kept running through my head was: These reporters are actually looking forward to this storm with glee! They are so excited they've even announced on one channel that the morning newscast will start a half hour earlier. Maybe I'm just getting old, but I cannot find the prospect of a coming storm anything to get excited about. Does it excite you when you get news of an approaching storm?

They must lead boring lives then if an approaching storm makes them excited! They should get out more (preferably in a force ten blizzard) then they won't be so cheerful! I hate storms, any storms and storms always spell trouble in one way or another! It's like they are laughing that it won't affect them. Give em something to wipe their smiles off their faces! Grrrrr... Gales worry me because they do so much damage.

Right, wolfie! I'm thinking all the time they are so happily talking about this storm that they must be nuts. As you say, storms never bring anything good.

Excited in a gleeful way? No definitely not. I do think it's important for people to be "excited" in a preparation kind of way if that makes sense. But there's nothing about a storm to be happy about. I hadn't heard about this latest storm. Is it something that will affect northeastern Pa? I'll have to see what I can find out.

I looked it up and didn't see anything besides possible flurries and snow showers in the forecast for here this week.

I live in Ohio, foxyfire, so I don't know if it will affect your area even though we are close. I do know they have the snow plows, etc. ready and waiting.

I get concerned this time of the year because I do work away from the house and don't like driving in bad weather. Maybe they are starting the news early to announce any school closings or government offices that will be closed as a result of the bad weather. I know sometimes they do this where I live when a snowstorm is predicted.

Snow is beautiful as long as it's on the grassy areas. Maybe it's the excitement of the holiday season and the first snow.

I think these reporters were a little too joyous, carolbee, to just be putting out alerts. Maybe it is the prospect of the first real snow of the season, but I don't find it appealing.

Um the only people who usually look forward to storms are storm chasers and weather people, since it keeps them from being so bored...lol I've never looked forward to storms, though have a little this year since Kentucky is still under drought conditions. So any that may come this way, as long as it isn't an ice storm I'll be perfectly happy with it.

Worldwise ~ Ice storms are my bane in life. I never get out of the house when those do occur here. Simply put people around this area think it's ok to drive faster in icy and stormy conditions. So if I see things covered in ice, I stay put inside. Although even than I'm not really safe, since last year when an ice storm hit here nearly had a new decor item in the shape of a car in my living room. Sorry to hear that you hurt your ankle during an ice storm that occured there. Oneandonemakesix ~ Once upon a time, in a galaxy far away I too had a dream of being a storm chaser and going after tornadoes, but that dream ended the moment I moved to a tornado prone area. I now dread severe storms and the thought of a tornado, sends me running with my tail between my legs to the storm shelter. And all it took to put fear in me, was to actually see with my own eyes the aftermath of tornado in a town only a mile away from me.

The last big ice storm we had, jeweled, I slipped and fell and broke my ankle in, so I don't want to see that either. Hope you get some rain though.

To be honest, the forecast of an approaching storm usually fills me with apprehension. The early warning is a signal for me to make sure I have my emergency supplies in the cupboard, and anything loose in the garden safely secured. I really don't like storms much, the damage they do and the aftermath of floods and winds is often quite devastating.

Yes, recycledgoth, the early warnings do help to get the word out so people can be prepared, but they do go overboard sometimes.

No...I am not excited about any storms at this moment in time...as I am spending my day sopping up the flood in my basement from the last "exciting" storm that blew through Seattle the past 2 days...Mine is not nearly so extensive and damaging as some..but mine is backbreaking and tedious and extremly messy!!!!! So let those reporters delight in the pending storm damage....I'm looking forward to a few days from now when I'm done with my clean up and hopefully in a better mood!!!! I am blessed I will say...to not be cleaning sewage or 2 feet of water out of my basement...mine was an inch and just wicked up into all my storage boxes and clothing ready for Christmas donations and such...I'm on my 9th load of wash today...and must head back down for a few more hours....:)

I sympathize with you, rx4life. My friend who has a basement had a similar job to do following a storm awhile back. Maybe those news reporters don't have to clean up a mess caused by any storm.

Only time I ever got excited about a storm approaching was this past summer. It meant that we would get rain which we really needed and still need. The shortage of rain this year really did some major damage. Heck, even when I saw dark clouds, the wind picking up, the normal signs of an approaching storm, I really didn't get to excited because that didn't always mean rain. Is this storm front going to be bad, like with ice and snow? Maybe that's why they are broadcasting a half an hour early for people that goes to work, for an up to date road report. We had a snow storm come in and dump 12 inches in less than couple of hours, and no one knew it was coming at all one year. It was a huge mess, so after that the weather people try to keep a better eye out for these storms.

We don't get snow either, so when we do it's the most beautiful sight. Now we been having a lot of rain lately, I'm not complaining one bit. Just wished that the cold winds we get, we could have gotten them during this past summer.

We don't usually get huge amounts of snow in my area, chertsy, but I guess it's all relative. A dusting of snow looks like a lot to some. Hope by now you've gotten plenty of rain. I know that some of the southern states have been suffering from drought conditions lately.

I live in Reno, Nevada, which is in the desert and is very dry because of it. So when we get a storm of any kind, it's news worthy. And during this time of the year, it's even more anticipated because we're all kinda hoping that we'll end up having a white Christmas. I tend to tease my Mother because she's almost obsessive about watching the weather forecasts online. One day she told me that she's constantly amazed by being able to find all that information because she remembered being younger and not knowing from day to day what the weather was going to be like. She said that they never know from one day to the next if it was going to rain or snow and being able to look these things up was so amazing that she couldn't help checking it constantly. Looking at it that way, I guess I kind of "get it" now.

I've always been an avid watcher of the news, dutchess, and that keeps me prettywell-informed about weather conditions, but it is nice to have instant access via the computer.

Yes, I get excited about snornados and snow twisters. I could dig a three footer covered in ice, just to see if I can tough it out...lol. 50 mph winds would add a nice touch along with minus 10 degrees. What's not to love?

I try to give storms a wide berth, sigma, because they have always frightened me. The snow is not so bad as I have only been in one blizzard that I can remember.

I've always been amused by the fact that when there's any kind of weather related news story - a blizzard or ice storm, a tornado, floods, even a heat-wave - the meteorologists are in their glory because instead of just giving a small segment on a newscast they ARE the newscast! I don't know, maybe for some it's the overtime pay if that's applicable or for others it's the idea of being the star of the show, the one who's there to tell people things they need to know to prepare themselves, or to tell them of cancellations and closings. No, it doesn't excite me when a storm is approaching but my 91 year old mom gets worried if she thinks we might have a power outage or something like that. Sometimes I'd wish they'd just play it down a little so I don't have to keep changing the channel to keep her from having a cow! I mean, I know what has to be done in case of a power failure so there's no sense in her getting all upset about something none of us can control anyway, right? Also, I can't believe how in my area if they're even calling for a few flurries everyone rushes out and buys all the bread and milk! So then when I discover I need it, not because I fear being snowed in for a few months but because I need it now, there's none to be found! Annie

You said it, anniepa! These people buy up everything in sight over the thought of a couple of inches of snow. I'll never understand why. And, yes, they have the constant interruptions during regular programming that really gets to some people-like me. We are all pretty up on how to prepare for a storm by now, and should not need to be reminded each time there is the threat of one.

Oh, absolutely now, especially when my son has to stay home and is very bored..lol Now if I didn't have to go out into the storm and I had everything I needed, then it is comparable to when the lights go out. Especially when I am snowed in...I also don't mind if it was closer to Christmas time and I had everything taken care of, that would be cool.. So I guess it depends on the circumstances...

Sometimes, storms can be amazing. I love watching lightning strike. It's "stalks" go in many different directions making lovely patterns. I also enjoy watching rain and snow. Thanks for reading ~R-X~

I'm kind of excited. This is the first storm of the year, which means winter is hitting here a lot earlier than it did for last year and I'm excited. I like snow, so that probably could be why I'm so excited.

I don't know if it excites me so much as worries me. Storms in Arkansas may mean tornadoes. But here in Southern California we get excited about rain because we haven't had any in so long! I do miss watching the lightning in a storm though. I always thought it looked pretty.

Worldwise...Have you ever noticed that local forecast or news outlets whichever you prefer, give us various weather forecasts at least three times within a half-hour broadcast.obsurd.With the advent of so many cable news broadcasts available the locals have nothing else to report so if something big is going to happen with the weather they get excited because it's something to report.sad, sad state for the little local guys.

Of course you're right, pismeof. Between cable and the web people hardly need the local news anymore.
