Should One Expect a Reward When Doing a Good Deed?

China
December 15, 2007 5:50am CST
Opinions about whether one should expect a reward when doing a good deed vary from people to people. Some people maintain that there should be a reward for a good deed. They explain that more people may be encoraged to help the needed if they could be rewarded. Nevertheless,in the absence of proper rewards, those who have done good deeds may sometimes feel disappointed. However, others hold the opposite view, especially in China. It is an indispensable part of Chinese tradition to help the needed regardless of any physical returns. What do you think? Should one expect a reward when doing a good deed?

As far as I am concerned doing a good deed is very impulsive. It is never planned to receive adulations of any sorts.

For me i dont,im sincere in doing things and whats more doing good deeds.I love to do that..i dont expect any reward..just the magic reward for after life from God is enough. But,if there's any really rewarding purpose that comes to me without me expecting it or wanting it..but it does for me to take it.I will take it as a form of appreciation..=) Cause, its like gift from God to me..so i will not miss the chance.hehe!

I believe you will feel the reward in your heart for doing a good deed and helping someone out. I love to help if possible. My neighbor boy years ago, used to help me always. Sometimes I would pay him if I had cash handy and it was a big task. But he never expected it. My neighbors and I help each other out all the time, any way we can.

You should no excpect to be rewarded of a good deed. You should do a good deed because you want to help others, not because you want a reward.

It is not wrong to do good things. But ti recieve a reward without asking for is just fine. I don't believe or I don't agrre rather that a when you do good things you must be given a reward. It is an impulse says one friend here. If you give, better, if not...it's just fine.

Actually, if you think logically about it, expecting a reward would negate the intention behind trying to do a good deed. Helping others when there's nothing in it for you should be it's own reward. Our sense of avarice is sickening to me. What ever happened to the days when you helped someone out who needed it without expecting anything at all from them? My family and I still try to do that, but I've noticed that many don't anymore. And no, if you're doing a "good deed", you should NOT expect a reward. Knowing that you helped someone should be it's own reward.

Doing something good for someone is all about Helping the other person,unselfishly..the reward is how You feel having given your time and effort for whatever reason-If you Love someone, that's a part of it.. If they show appreciation in some way afterwards, that's an added bonus-It should never be anticipated or expected,as you're then "Only in it for the payback" which is contrary to the good Deed concept.. If You're in it for the payback, you may as well bill them!

If I "do a good deed" for a reward, then have I truely done a good deed? A good deed is it's own reward, if I do it for anyother reward then I have only done a good deed for myself and not to bless another. You must divest all concern for yourself and your ego to do a good deed. If you would run into a burning house for your children sake you have only saved your childern. If you run into a house on fire for a compleate stranger, knowingly risking your live then you have blessed another and not yourself. If I excpected a reward, then it was not a "good deed" it was a service.

Hello SEOGUY. if one expect a reward when doing good deeds, then good deeds become commodities. Thank you for responding. ^-^

i find it selfish to expect a reward for doing a good deed. doing a good deed is reward in itself. i think that if less people expected rewards for doing good, they would become more likely to do good. think about it, if doing good deeds were a regular part of your life and you expected nothing in return, wouldn't you be doing good deeds all day long? and if everyone did good deeds, it would be such a nice world to live in. sadlly, people are too selfish and caught up in 'what is my benefit' to do so... try doing just one good deed a day, even if it is opening the door for a stanger or saying have a good day to a stranger.. it is contangious

well if that is what in a persons mind then i am afraid to say its wrong good deeds done by a person is totally not for da sake of money but would show how nice a person is and not to mention da more good deeds a person would do da more chances for him to go to heaven

Your're right, it varies in opinion. But welcome back to reality. I'm a hypocrite not to say I would hope for a little something after doing a good deed. Most of the time a person will expect a thing, but that doesnt make a person materialistic of course. Especially when we are hoping for a prayer to be answered, or a miracle to happen, or thinking about a thing we want to have or needed. But if we notice that a person has got nothing to give but a mere "thanks", that should be ok. Also there are those rewards that the person cant give to you including thank you, w/c will make you feel rewarded. Happiness, being able to help and a feeling that you're a good person will be a token. So for your question if we should expect a reward? Yes, we should. Its not good manners if you cant say thank you at the least though. Hope "reward" in this article doesnt mean "material" (",)

I don't think that one should be rewarded for a good deed because if it is rewarded then to me it ceases to be a good deed. it becomes a sort of job. When I do a good deed I don't do it for a reward I do it because I want to do something for someone for my own satifaction of being a help.

no, an award should not be expected. One should give without remembering and receive without forgetting. We should hope to build our treasures in heaven, and not on this earth.

It is very natural and human to expect a reward when going a good deed but I think it is not healthy for the person do does the good deed. Whether to do a good deed or not you have the sole power to decide and you feel good after doing it (virtue is its own reward so goes the saying). But whether to express gratitude or offer a reward depends on the receipient - the power position had shifted. And to expect and yearn for reward without the power to get it totally negates the euphoria of doing a good deed.
