Pet Peeves: It's addictive! Not addicting!

I can't stand when people say the word addicting. It's incorrect. Anybody else share these feeling? Does anyone else have any similar annoyances?

How about this mistake which is always used. When you say PIN number, you are saying Personal Identification Number Number. It drives my husband nuts but it's on all recordings and every where you look. Maybe they should have called it a PI number.

You will be annoyed again and again and you will never be able to correct anyone because everyone is wrong! Majority rules in this case, I guess.

Wow. The realization that I just got may in fact throw my entire life off track. I never thought about that before. Wow. Thank you for that piece of information that might either make me smarter or annoy me every time I hear that for the rest of my life. Very clever!

I don't like when people say conversate instead of converse. I also don't like when people's grammar is not up too par. I notice that a lot of homophones are misused (their, there, they're) as well; this irritates me. I've always been good with grammar and spelling though. Maybe I do something that irritates people as well, so we're all in the same boat.

Corrections need to be made here; I did not proofread well enought. Too should actually be "to" in the second sentence!

I'm worried about posting comments here now as I may get a bashing for misspelling something or not using the appropriate punctuation!!! lol

Also, strictly speaking, it is bad form to say, "I don't like when..." better would be, "I don't like it when..." or better still, "I dislike people that..." but we all make mistakes, what is important is that the meaning is clear and unambiguous. Those for whom English is their first language should, however, endeavour to write correctly in order to assist those here that are learning. all the best urban

There are some good ones pointed out here and I thought it was me being petty and picky. I have a couple. If you're fed up with something you say ..'I couldn't care less', meaning you care as least as possible about the matter. Lots of people say "I could care less"....GRRR! The other one is an expression my family often used and I've heard others using it as well. It's what you say when someone or something is working above the expected level..."that tractor is going 19 to the dozen" or "Look at that bloke there, working 19 to the dozen". How many times have I heard people say 10 to the dozen...just doesn't make sense. I wish people would think before they speak and also read their post before they submit it. I'm terrible at proof reading my work.

Oh course there is the dreaded "Hot Water Heater." If your water is already hot, you don't need a heater. In my business, you have to be very clear with your communication.

That's a good one, unless you are making your hot water hotter.

I see a place for both forms of the word. I say that I find mylot addicting. That's incorrect? I didn't know that. Thank you. I'm with the poster who doesn't like conversate. Me neither. It's converse! Ebonics annoys me. It's "ask" not "ax" okay?

I hate it when people try to be clever and use words that they clearly have no idea what it actually means.
