A Sunday like a Monday

Last night at work was horrendous! I was in charge and had to deal with snippy little staffing issues. Then, a patient with a picky family, her nasogastric tube got clogged. Yes it is what it sounds like. I spent 45 minutes getting it free flowing again. Then my aide gave her a bedbath and wasn't careful enough and the tube became dislodged. I had to call the family. I got yelled at, called incompetent and hung up on. I had to call my boss because this family is always threatening to sue. He was nice about it and told me that accidents happen and not to get upset. When I got home, I was way to wound up to go to sleep. I also couldn't settle long enough to read. I finally just went to bed and layed there.

Sorry to hear about your night. I used to work as a CNA and hated it when I had days like that. It seems like it never is just 1 or 2 smaller things that go wrong. It's more like 1 little thing goes wrong and then snowballs from the pt., to the family, to the aides, to the supervisor, etc. Hopefully tonight will be a better night for you, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I sure hope your retirement plan makes up for the abuse you get.

Wow Trace, you really had an aggrevating time at work! It's too bad when families are like that, they don't realise so much about all that. Unfortunately, some people are just sue crazy, never seeing the reality of things as they really are. Doesn't seem fair that they hollered at you for the aide dislodging the NG tube! Don't worry about them, the best thing you did was talk to your boss, and it sounds like he's very understanding of that family. Don't take it to heart either, there's always going to be patients families who are demanding perfection in imperfect situations. (Wouldn't you love to see THEM have to cope with doing all that for a patient just to see how hard it all is?) Then to have staffing issues on top...I feel for you. No wonder you had a rough night! I hope all goes much better for you tonight.

That does sound ghastly. You deserve better, but at least it sounds like you have an understanding boss. I've learned the hard way that incidents like this can pretty much only be cured by time. Your myLot friends love you and I promise that in just a few days you will be feeling much better. Just hang in there, kitten!
