I am so mad at myself!

Last night I made a big pot of yummy meatballs and sauce. I used the crock pot, and when we were done with dinner I turned it off and waited for it to cool before I put it away, like I always do. Except this time I forgot. I got up this morning and found it sitting there on the counter. I am so mad. I can't believe it. Not only is it wasted food and money, but I was really looking forward to having leftovers today. What would you do if you left it out overnight? Would you throw it away or eat it anyway?

No, I have never had food poisoning, and I plan to keep it that way. I threw it out.

I would throw it out. Even though I would be sad. It's better to throw it out and be safe than take a chance and get sick. I have done this before and I was so mad at myself.

I'm with the "throw it out" crowd. Better wasted food than a sick family. I just hate it when I do things like that. My memory is so bad anymore (or I'm just so distractable) that I've started using the kitchen timer to remind me not to forget to put the food away. For a situation like yours, I'd set the timer for an hour and go put the food away then turn off the timer. My timer keeps going off every 30 seconds until I stop it, which is good in case I don't hear it the first time - or get sidetracked on my way to the kitchen.

That's exactly my problem, my memory. Plus with a million things on my to do list, I don't get to it all.

Throw it out! It has hamburger in it which collects germs as it sits at low temperatrues that can make you sick! Better safe than sorry! I always take my food out of the crock pot and put it in a container then leave the crockpot to cool. I am sorry you lost your leftovers and wasted your money hopefully next time will be better.

I think you're right. Where meat is concerned, better safe than sorry.

It depends on how many hours it was left out. If less than 9 or 10 I would eat it anyway (unless it took on another odor) . But really, once you heat it up - you kill anything nasty that might have grown on it over night. Then again, I am a man and we'll eat anything.

I forgot about that- reheating kills bacteria.

LOL. I to am a member of the barbaric gender. I was going to recommend eating it also but for different reasons. If it was a tomato based sauce then the acidity would keep any of the little varmits from growing. Have you ever seen how long catsup bottles sit out on counters in your seedier restaurants? Same reason.

I have done that before and I get so mad at myself. My husband does it too. It's just a good thing that we don't do it very often. But, we do toss it away in the morning. We don't want to take the chance of getting sick or getting our kids sick.

Yeah, I would feel so bad if my son got sick- and just to save a few bucks.

Yea, I have done that too. I would throw it out. Although when you think back before the invention of electricity cooked food including meat would have been stored overnight and re-heated the next day, and even today in many countries there is no refrigeration for the majority of people. I suppose when you re-heat it it kills a lot of the bacteria that might have grown overnight. I would not have a good feeling though in particular since there is all kinds of chemicals and hormones added to our meat these days.

It does happen. We may not like it to happen. But i have done that a few times. i hate it when i do it though. I would cook something the night before and forget to put it away and go looking for it only to find it on the stove from the night before. I usually just throw it out. I do not want to take a chance on getting sick from food that has gone bad.

Luckily I don't do it often, because I can't afford to keep throwing food out.

Glad this has worked for you. I'm not sure I'm ready to try that yet, maybe if there was no meat in it.

I would probably eat it. I am so bad about leaving food out on the stove overnight and I always just package it up and eat it the next few days (unless it smells or has magically grown fuzz overnight or anything.) I haven't had food poisoning yet. Fingers crossed right? :)

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who forgets things like that once in a while. I did that a few months ago with a really good pork roast. I was really upset when I found it sitting out the next morning too. I didn't take the chance of eating it because I had food poisoning once a long time ago and it was awful. I was upset about the wasted food and money too. Roasts are really expensive now days.

Much better safe than sorry. Pitch the thing. Sad to say it, but it is what needs to be done. I haven't left anything out in quite a long time. And if I did, I'd have to gauge how long ago things were.

First don't be too upset. We have all probably done this a time or two. It is a bit upsetting, but hey you'll remember next time right? I'd throw it away. No use in risking getting sick. Then you'd really be angry with youself.

Well, though it a waste of money, you shouldn't eat that meatballs. You can't risk your family's health on it.

I have done that before as well. I would toss it especially if it has meat in it. Its not worth the chance of getting sick from spoiled food.
