Tahquamenon Falls - This is a picture of the lower falls. The Tahquamenon River is also known as the Dark River or the Golden River. It plays an important part in Longfellow's poem, The Song of Hiawatha.

This may seem old but I'm doing some research for a project and am looking for information from the people who have been there - places to travel to or visit. I've lived all over the US but my area of expertise is Michigan. Just a few of the wonderful things to see in Michigan are the Great Lakes (Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie), The Mackinac Bridge, the Straits of Mackinac, Mackinac Island, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the locks at Sault Sainte Marie, Miners Castle, and Chapel Creek. Mackinac Island was featured in the movie "Somewhere in Time" staring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour - the hotel that is the main setting for the movie is on the Island. At Greenfield Village you can visit the pasts of Henry Ford and Thomas Edison. My favorite place is Tahquamenon Falls which includes one of the largest falls in the eastern United States. The Upper Falls are about 200 feet wide and 40 feet high. The Lower Falls are made up of a series of rapids and cascades divided by an island. So, tell me about some of your favorite places and/or if you have ever visited Michigan and been to any of these places on my list - did you enjoy your visit?

I love San Diego - san diego
I have never been to Michigan. Don't even think I've ever even passed through it but it sounds very nice with the falls and all. My favorite place is San Diego. When my ex was in the Air Force we were stationed in the Mojave Desert and visited family I had in San Diego to get out of it and I fell in love with it. Many years later I finally got to move there and it was the happiest 10 years of my life. The weather is always perfect and the people were great. I'm hoping some day I can go back there to live.

Oh yes, I actually lived in San Diego for a time - I was stationed there while going to school for the US Navy. I'm afraid the only 'sights' I remember though are the great zoo and the beach. Can you think of any particular places you visited there?

I have also been to lovely San Diego. I imagine that it must have been a fantastic place to live. It seems so warm and sunny there all year and it must hardly ever rain. I liked the water front feel of the place. I enjoyed a trip on a tram and went to Mexico for the day.

I do not care much for over touristed spots though I have been to many. I prefer out of the way little known wonders.... one nice place is letchworth state park in upstate new york. there was a book put out years ago by reader's digest called "off the beaten path" those are the places I like best.

Yes, I like the less populated areas and have actually read "Off the Beaten Path" if I remember right there were some beautiful pictures in the book also - unless I'm confussing it with another book. I've actually been to New York but I was very very young and as far as I know only went to New York City. I would love to some day visit upstate as well as Maine and Vermont - two of the few states I haven't been to.

Too funny, after reading talking about "Off the Beaten Path" I got thinking and I actually think I have the book. I friend of mine was moving to a smaller place and didn't have room for all of her books and gave me a bunch. I then in turn had to move myself and most of my books are still packed away in boxes. I'm going to go look later today to see if I can find it :)

I also am from Michigan originally. You did not mention Iron River which is a great area s well. I've been to all you mentioned. I also worked at mackinaw island for 2 seasons back in the early 70s. You forgot to mention there are no motorized vehicles allowed on the Island. There is a ferry to take across the Mackinaw Straits to get there. Fort Michimillimac at the same area is also a Historical site to visit. I am not sure but in the UP is an area that has the Stations of the Cross. I want to say iron River but not sure. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I did know you were from Michigan Bob and you are correct there are a lot of places and details I didn't share about our home state but then there are books and books and books written on the topic. A couple more of my favorites are Holland during the Tulip Festival and Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes - afraid there are tons of people at both but certainly worth the visit and crowds. Although the dunes during the off season are spectacular also. "Stations of the Cross" - that's one I've never heard of, I'll have to check into that.

I didn't travel to US at all, but I have a lot of favorite places one of them is Luxour and Aswan in Egypt because I like the pharonic temples and the great history, I like the sun set in the Nile and the other place that I really liked is London, I liked the museums there like the National Gallery because it has a huge number of original picture and I like art very much.

Oh all of those sound wonderful. I too enjoy and appreciate fine art and although we have some terrific museums here I've only been to a few smaller ones - nothing that had works such as the National Gallery which I have heard of.

I only passed through Michigan, and I will have to look at some photos to see if I was in any of the parks. We went on the interstate and all we saw were motels, etc. I wish we had driven through some small towns, and I did see the Great Lakes, and part of Lake Superior, and we went though Sault Sainte Marie but we were on the interstate. I guess we were not supposed to see the beautiful sites.

Oh the small towns are wonderful, it's a shame you didn't get to visit some. Lots of historical homes and buildings, lots of history and good old fashioned country life. I have some great pictures of Lake Superior, the kids (2 youngest) and I went camping in the UP one year and one day took a trip up there - I was born in Michigan and had actually never seen Superior until then. We spent most of the day, rock hunting, the water was tooooo cold for me but the kids went wading. For those who don't know Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes and also the furthest north - middle of the summer it's very very cold.

I have not visited Michigan yet. I have been to California three times. I loved seeing San Diego, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz and San Francisco. I liked the view of the Pacific Ocean, the beach communities and the trams. I also like waterfalls and overseas I have seen some lovely ones in Samoa, as well as white palm fringed beaches.

Oh Samoa sounds wonderful - I've been all over the continental US, Canada, and Mexico (both just across the border from US but never deep into the countries) I've never had the pleasure of visiting other countries though. There is just so much to see in America I'm guessing I never will leave even for trips.

Yes, America is a huge country that you will never tun out of great places to visit. It is wonderful that you have been to Canada and Mexico. If I lived in the USA I would take advantage of cheap airfares to the Caribbean islands and Central America. The amazing wildlife of Costa Rica might be a wonderful thing for you enjoy seeing one day. It would probably be exciting for you to see the Panama canal.

Costa Rica has sparked an interest in me a few times but not enough to actually go there, yet at least plus money tends to keep me closer to home. My parents spent 5 years in Bolivia and from what I've heard and seen in pictures a beautiful place also but don't think I would want to go there.

Well, over my lifetime, I have lived in a lot of different states. I have also been Lucky enough to visit a lot of different areas as well. Some of them I do consider very good vacations, and have put them on places I need to go and visit again when I have the money. One of my most favorite places to visit, had to be New York City. For anyone who has never been there, if you like people, and just being able to get a chance to see History, and places they show on TV everyday, I highly recommend someone going there and visiting. We had so much Fun. One of our Best memories there was either going to Ground Zero and Staten Island via the Ferry, or seeing a lot of famous stars right outside of Radio City Music Hall. My husband even got to shake hands with Cuba Gooding Jr. But truthfully, there is so much to see and do there that you almost need a week to be able to do so, and I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who has the time and money.

I would have to agree - New York City is not a one day trip. I did a series of articles on the city last year and could have written something new each day and not run out of matterial. The Empire State building and Statue of Liberty would be the top of my list also. I've been there but not as an adult.

I have been to many of the places you mentioned. As you know I live in Michigan also. However, I like the western United States. Especially the mountains. I have lived out west in Oregon and my son lives in Montana currently. Every time I visit the west I also enjoy the mountains and miss them when I come back home.

My favorite place that we went and visited is in South Dakota. We went to see Mount Rushmore. The pictures you see of that place do not do it justice. It is a place that touched me right down into my soul. It has a place under it that you walk into it and it has all the particulars about how the monument came about and what went into it coming into existence. Than eight miles down the rode there is another monument that at the time we went to see it was in progress. A most inspiring place. It is the monument to Crazy Horse. No one but Indians are allowed to work on it. That was almost ten years ago. I plan on going back and seeing how far it has progressed. Those two places are all inspiring!

I too have been to South Dakota - afraid it was March and I wasn't impressed for the most part but you are right about Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse very moving. We were there for #2 son's wedding, he was stationed in Rapid City for 7 years and they got married at the hotel near Mount Rushmore. That was 4 years ago we were there and it's still underconstruction but it's neat to think what it will be when it is finished. I posted some pictures under South Dakota some time back, I should check to see if their still there.

Hi Faith! I was in Michigan one time when I was singing in the youth choir at the church I was going to but it has been so long ago I really don't remember a lot about it. I do know it was a nice city though and I enjoyed the trip and being with my friends. My favorite place that my family and I have ever got to visit was Honolulu, Hawaii about four years ago. I had seen lots of pictures, of course, but they didn't do justice at all. We took a Circle Island tour and got to see a lot of the beautiful scenery and plants and flowers. It was absolutely beautiful!!!

I've never visited Michigan... although a friend studied there and she sent us photos of her walking in deep snow and the like. My favourite place at present is New Zealand. the mountains and the scenary is to die for. And it's such a liveable place, with friendly and funny people, and so many adventure activities. I hope to go back there again soon. Especially to see the wonders of nature like the MOeriki boulders which are like perfect spheres in the ocean.

Grandson and Snow - This picture was taken New Years Day 2008 in Michigan - it shows just how much snow we got over night.
Yes, we do get our fair share of snow - I've added a picture of my 5 year old grandson that was taken New Years Day this year - we got almost 2 feet of snow over night. I've never heard of the Moeriki Boulders but am going to have to check into them sounds fasinating.

I've been to Makinac bridge a couple of times and that is amazing. Not only the bridge, but the story of its construction. We visited the Grand Hotel, but unfortunately could not afford the price. The 'Somewhere in time' movie is also quite interesting. I've been to Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village as well - both wonderful places to visit with so much to see. Even though I live in Ohio, I have not seen too much else in Michigan. djbtol

I would love to visit the site of Somewhere in Time its one of my favourite movies. Three years ago I went to visit a friend in sout west virginia oh my gosh how truly amazing the evenings were, the lightening bugs giving me a personal display before it went pitch black. My friend took me to The blue mountain Park way and we toured round Mowbray Mill, this was also truly inspiring and so wonderful to go back in time. I have to say its one of the best weeks of my life. I love New York city as one of my favourite places. Michigan reminds me of the film Message in a bottle and I would definitely love to visit, also chicago too. Where I live here on the Isle of Man its a tiny isle.I don't drive; My son and daughter, took me to a beautiful little country hotel called Glen Helen hotel and restaurant for my birthday. I had been there a few times for fun days with a company I worked for and the country side around this little place is truly amazing and very picturesque. A couple of years before that my son and daughter took me to another part of the island called Glen May waterfall, oh my god its so absolutely amazing.

I just returned from a family vacation to Michigan that included stops at Mackinac Island and Frankenmuth - two of my favorite places in Michigan to visit. I also love, when driving across the Mackinac Bridge, to see the two windmills that they have in Mackinaw City... which manage to power some 500 homes! (Some think they are an eye-sore, but I can't help but be impressed by the use of clean energy... especially with rising oil prices...) And how could you talk about Mackinaw/Mackinac without talking about the fudge! ;) Thanks for the post!
