Do you TIP? When you got out to eat or order delivery do you tip the server?

January 17, 2008 8:54am CST
I have recently started ordering food from random places at lunch time with several of my coworkers...and that aroused this question in my mind. One person claimed that the prices were already raised in order to provide the delivery person or waitress a tip, another person said she never tips because she can't afford it. In the end nobody tipped but me, and because there was 60 dollars worth of food ordered I felt bad that I could only tip $5.

I waited tables for a long time and the only place I ever worked where tips were included, and not in the price of the food - but as an added percent to the total bill, was a 5-star resort hotel. I always liked getting at least a 20% tip, anything less then that and I felt gypped! But I gave excellent service and I was very friendly too. Plus I always threw in extras, like a free soda for the kids or whatever. But there's a difference between people who just can't afford a hefty tip, and people who are just chintzy tight-wad a$$holes! And a server can usually tell the difference! One time we had pizza delivered and the guy had had to go through some sh!t to get it to us, I don't remember exactly what, but he had definitely provided above and beyond the call of duty service, and we had miscalculated our funds or something, because we had to end up tipping him with phucking change!!!! I think he got maybe a buck. I felt like such a jerk, but we hadn't done it on purpose.... what can you do in those circumstances? And certainly feeling bad doesn't fix it! I haven't seen you around lately... What? You have a life outside mylot or something?? (Hehehe.)

Yeah, I'm very glad to be away from that work-a-day world sh1t. I know the feeling of spending more time at work then in my real life. Hehehe... I bet that delivery guy was damn glad for the day you 'gypped' him after that!

Yeah...upped my hours at work...bleh. Now I spend more time working than anything else and I feel guilty plopping my butt in front of the puter now... I know what you mean about the feeling guilty deal. One time I ordered a pizza with my debit card and I didn't realize until after I had already placed the order that I only had a dollar on me and no way to go an atm, they wouldn't let me add it to the bill or even order breadsticks so as to fit a tip in there, I felt horrible for days and always tipped that guy 4-5 dollars after that. Heh.

Unless I am in an establishment that doesn't allow tipping, I always tip. Well, not ALWAYS...there were a couple of times when our waitstaff was downright terrible. Not because they were new or overly crowded either. Those times, I didn't tip. I usually tip well too, I even tip the person at the doughnut shop and the coffee shop.

me too, especially the smaller businesses because I know their employees don't make much.

I only give what I can, especially when I'm satisfied of their service. I don't consider how much tip to give, as long as I feel generous!;) I have also worked on restaurants, so I know how these servers work. There's also this method in some restaurants in which they refer to as, "centralized" tipping. Where they get to put all the tips they get in a box, then spread it to every service personnel and receive their fair share. In my case, I go to only a few restaurants that I am familiar of giving their good service and quality of food they offer.

I have worked as a waitress in the past, and I wished they would've done it like that, although it still wouldn't have helped any. I made less than two dollars an hour, and sometimes, on holidays like Christmas, when only a total of 4 people would come in to eat the whole day I'd go home with 15 dollars in my pocket hating my job for having to work Christmas for nothing, practically.

Hehe! Well we have a different situation here, especially working on holidays. People would go travelling and go to malls, where most of the restaurants and other establishmensts are jam-packed with hungry corwds waiting for their turn to dine in!;) But you are right, such tips won't help any other way and that's the reason why I decided to shift from a food server/waiter to a kitchen staff!;)

ha. Then when the waitress doesn't get a tip because the food took too long and she chews on your @$$ you can say "hey, I've been there before, man, I know what it's like!" :) I just worked for a small restaurant in a small town. Thank god that's over, I don't like people enough to kiss-@ss for a tip.

If the prices of the food are high, that has nothing to do with the servers wages, that has to do with the owners profits. In most places waitresses and servers are paid below min wage because they are expected to get tips. When they dont get tips, I doubt its really worth their while to work there. I always give a decent tip cause i have worked in resteraunts, and if you eat in the same place often and dont tip.. i wouldnt expect you will get good service, or maybe good service with a side of spit in your meal lol. its sad but true. there ARE people like that in the world and as you may have guessed, you dont have to be very well educated to work in most resteraunts! I would always tip if i were you! When you tip and are friendly to your server/hostess, you ALWAYS get good service. Tell your colleges to put their selves in those poor peoples shoes for the day. If that one lady can't afford to tip, then she probably can't afford to eat out, after all waht is an extra 2-3 bucks on top of your meal price, not a lot to us, but when everyone gives them 2-3 bucks then at least they have a decent wage!

I agree completely...I tip everywhere I go, and some people even think I overtip (sometimes I do) But, like you said, what is the big deal? A couple bucks isn't gonna break me, and if so, I wouldn't be eating out, I'd be doing my grocery shopping at the dollar store and livin' off of Ramen Noodles. :)

Absolutely, I always tip. My mom used to waitress, so I know waitresses depend on their tips. But I am very careful to tip based on service. I usually tip 20 perecnt, but if the waiter/waitress is not attentive then I will scale the tip back.

:O That's bad. In places where it is common to tip, the workers are actually paid below minimum wage on the basis that their tips will make up for it. Generally, for large groups they factor in a gratuity fee, in which case you don't need to leave a tip. It's usual to tip about 15%. But tips aren't required, especially if the service sucked.

Yeah, tips aren't required, and if the waiter/waitress was a jerk then I don't tip. If it sucked because they made mistakes then I try to notice if they are trying or if they feel bad for their mistake, or if they're just @$$holes about it. Very rarely do I not tip, and the waitress has to be an all out jerk to not get anything at all. But most waitressing positions that I am aware of pay less than 2 dollars an hour...

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. It just depends on how the server was, how timely they food was delievered, all of those things. If it doesn't seem great, and the server is just plain rude, they will not get a tip. And, even if I can't afford to tip, I like leaving a small tip on the table so the server at least gets something so they know that I appreciated their service.

I try to tip my server whenever I can. It all depends on how long it takes for them to deliver it or serve me. I also think about how they treat me or who ever I'm with.

I usually tip if there is small change left or the service rendered is very good. But generally, I will follow the cultural practices of that place or country about whether tipping is commonly practised. For example, in London, it is quite usual for taxi drivers to expect tips from their passengers, so if I am in London, I will make sure I also tip such drivers. Some eating places I've visited specifically have a "No Tipping Please" sign posted. Also many establishments already charge a 10% service charge in their bill, so to me this is in a sense a 'forced' tip already for the service, and I won't feel so bad should I not add a tip when paying.

i do tip always and I try to tip well. If I cant afford a decent tip, i just don't eat out. Still I don't understand why we are expected to pay for our meal and still pay the waitress' salary. It seems to me that her boss should be paying her much better. This is the only business that one can get away with paying far less than minimum wage.

I ssometimes give tips to waiters and waitresses. But it all depends on the situation. No matter how small the amount I have ordered if I get the right service, then I give them tip. But if I get irritated in waiting my order for so long, then they will not get a single cent from.

Wow, too bad that your co-workers wouldn't chip in for a real tip, but I'm sure that the delivery person realized that you were the only one tipping and was probably grateful for it, as he should have been. I absolutely always tip - I'll even order less, so I'm sure that I'll have enough money for the tip. Most of these delivery people don't get zip for pay, and come out in the worst weather, up stairs, down badly lit and unfamiliar streets, and somehow manage to find you. And since I do tip well, I find that the delivery drivers like coming to my address, and generally make a really speedy delivery. So it's a win/win, as I see it. I have also worked as a waitress and bartender, and worked really hard for my tips. Having to share my tips with anyone else wouldn't have set too well with me, except of course in a team bartending situation. I left one place, because they expected me to give them 20% of MY TIPS, which they used to pay the valets and other personnel that I was not responsible for paying. They were, as the owners of the establishment. I called the Department of Labor and reported them for it, and they were ordered to cease and desist with that practice immediately. Yay - small victories are still victories. Just keep doing what you're doing. You seem to have the right idea and a good heart.

Well don't usually tip unless they earn it. If I'm in a cafe or something and get poor service, well, no tip for you. If they do their job I tip a buck or two. Although if I recall rightly in some places you're not supposed to tip. But I could be wrong?

I used to tip about 10% of the bill except some extraordinary cases. With credit cards things became more difficult as you don't carry around lots of small notes. Only one restaurant in London asked me if I wanted to tip and included in the credit card bill. In Europe is changes from country to country: Spain tip is not well seen, waiters are well paid thou; in Netherlands is already included.

I tip when we go to a restaraunt if the service has been good. Sometimes you will get a waitress that never comes back to the table once the whole time you are there to see if you need anything then I don't tip. I am not the richest person in the world so I can't afford to tip alot but I do tip what I can. Some restaurants the tips are mandatory and already figured into the bill when you get it.

Me, I am not used to giving tips when I dine in restaurant, it is not that I am Mrs. Cheapstake, it is just that we are not use to it. But I did notice, people from US, Europe do give tips when they dine outside. Here in Philippines, some rich people to give tips to the delivery person or waitress, but ordinary person, like me don not.

Tips are not required and I don't feel bad when I don't tip. All companies are required to make sure the tips they report and their hourly rate is added to make sure the employee is paid atleast minnimum wage. Of course, if the server gives good service I'm going to tip, but I'm definately not afraid to leave without placing a tip on the table.
