For the love of flippin pete!! DO NOT FEED YOUR DOGS GRAPES OR RAISINS..I was just in a thread about feeding pets human scrapes and I have to say that I was SO disturbed by some of the replies...The occasional treat of certain human foods is ok (I wouldnt recommend it myself but ppl will do it regardless)...HOWEVER Grapes and raisins are TOXIC to dogs please please please DO NOT let your dogs eat them!! ALSO! DO NOT feed your dog CHOCOLATE!!! Again, like the grapes and raisins, chocolate is TOXIC to dogs... Look ppl I know you love your animals etc etc but the cold hard reality is THEY ARE NOT HUMAN...their digestive systems are VERY different to ours and though you may be giving them these yummy treats with love you could very well be putting them into an early grave!! Other things to AVOID giving your dog CAT FOOD (particularly for larger dogs) POTATOS NUTS RAW EGGS, POULTRY ETC Do your research ppl seriously...I'm sorry but I get SO bent out of shape when ppl do things like this WITHOUT getting the facts first..You wouldnt feed you INFANT CHILD something he or she shouldnt have right?! http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pets_peoplefoodtoavoid

I already knew about all these dangerous foods and I think it is unfogivable for pet owners not to make themselves aware of these foods. I saw the discussion you were referring too but I did not respond as I do not approve of what some people feed their pets and I was afraid I would piss some of the responders off. Thanks for making a point and sharing this information.

Actually making your own dog/cat food and snacks isnt necessarily the best bet either...Simply because by doing that what you make lacks certain things the animals need..

Another thing you don't ever want to feed your dogs is chicken bones as they tend to shred into smaller pieces as the dog chews them up and it leads to cutting the dogs throat causing bleeding into the belly. It's mostly the smaller bones like the legs. After going through the whole dog food thing a few months back I clearly make sure to stay updated on all this stuff. It helps in the long run and saves your dogs life (lives). Thanks for posting this though. Most generally if I feed my dog scraps it's usually a cooked egg or piece of sausage. He is very finicky on what he eats anyhow.

I'd actually read some time back that ANY raw bones can be harmful to your dog or maybe it was cooked bones...either way I was totally shocked to find that out because I'd always though that bones were good for them (minus chicken..I knew about that since I was a kid).. I really wish ppl would be more aware ya know....I mean I understand and appreciate the fact that ppl love their pets as if they were their own kids, part of the family etc..I do too!! but the fact of the matter is, they are ANIMALS not humans...and many of the careless mistakes that are made when feeding our animals can cause them serious damage and even kill them..so why not be safe rather than sorry ya know... thanks for posting btw :-D

It is cooked bones that you do not feed your pets! They become brittle when cooked. Chicken & pork bones tend to splinter more. Small sawed bones|like those from T-Bone, Chuck steak) splinter easily, too. My wonderful vet suggested soup bones, 3-4" long, popped into boiling water for a FEW SECONDS,just so they are not bloody! They love the marrow inside.

I didn't know about grapes and raisins. oops. I don't purposely feed my dog cat food either. But, we do have 2 cats. I keep the cat food in the master bathroom and i try to keep the door closed so that Misty, my beloved dog, doesn't get in there. With kids, a husband, and sometimes my absent mind, the door ends up open and she sneaks in. she eats it as fast as she can before she gets caught. She gets scolded and all that, and for the most part she doesn't get it often. I've tried putting the cat bowl up high, but my cats like to knock on the floor. lol. I guess that's where they want to eat it.

Good information to know! I recently found out about the grapes and raisins thing and I stopped giving them to my dogs, but she ate them for years and she was fine. I guess we were lucky, huh! I also just recently found out about cat food being bad for dogs. I always assumed that pet foods were sort of interchangeable, and that the worst thing that could happen if your dog ate the cat's food would be that he'd turn into a cat! Lists of foods that should not be fed to dogs should be put on flyers and made available at pet stores, vets, and internet forums about pets!

Great idea.... but do you actually think that BIG BROTHERS like Purina, etc., would allow that? We were all brainwashed into IAMS, only tofind out the downside of that great product.

I think that dog food companies have done a great job at brainwashing us into believing that we should only feed the food they make and everything else is bad. What did dogs eat before commercial dog food was invented? and yet dogs are still around today and not extinct so we must've been doing something right (Dogs are considered omnivores - just like us - so perhaps they are not so different) I don't think cat food is necessarily bad for dogs, the only "problem" with cat food is that it's higher in protein and fat. Too much protein fed to large breeds can screw up the body during the growth process and too much fat (for any breed) can cause pancreatitis. Other than that, dog and cat food is about the same (cat food has more taurine) You can feed your dog cat food, but you can't feed your cat dog food. (not going to get into the "why" now) There is some research that might suggest dogs' bodies would prefer more protein than is available is most commercial foods such as science diet or iams but vets are still debating about this because they think too much protein can cause renal failure. Dogs also do well on a variety of foods and feeding the same food over and over again year after year might to be linked to allergy development so don't be afraid to give fido new things. I change my dogs' food often (different protein sources) for that reason and also because I want them to have sturdy stomachs. I want them to be able to eat something new and not get runny stools like I see at work every day. In conclusion, make sure you know which human foods are dangerous for your pets, but don't be afraid to give them table scraps (just don't make that the major part of their meal because without proper supplementation you won't be feeding your dog quite everything he needs) and as a rule of thumb, if the first ingredient in a dog food is grain (like corn), stay away.. make sure the first few ingredients are meat-based before grain is listed which as you will realize will rule out 90% all the dog food sold in places like walmart, etc.

You are definitely right LadyJ people treat their dogs better than people sometimes, I think that that is totally rediculous. If they were children and you kept feeding them anything that they wanted regardless of whether it is good for them or not, they would come and take your child away! People need to treat their pets appropriately for their type, breed, and size. Besides giving a dog table scraps is a good way to end up with a begging dog who won't behave at mealtimes.

Thank you for that information. I hadn't heard about grapes and raisins before. My dog is pretty picky, and I dont think he would eat them anyways, but its good to know. Also feeding your dogs raw meat every once in a while is great for them! Before we domesticated dogs, they ate raw meat all of the time, so its good to get that meat into there system every once in a while.

I knew that chocolate was bad for dogs but I would never have thought of grapes or raisins as being harmful. I don't think i've ever even come across a dog that ate fruit of any type. I did have a collie that liked green beans though. :) Thanks for the great info! I would have never known about this if not for your post.

Thank you for the reminder. Onions aren't good for them either, as well as a few other things. I know people who feed raw, but, I don't have the inclination to do that. People can kill their animals with kindness. People have this misconception that dogs need variety like we do. That couldn't be further from the truth. They are fine if they eat the same thing everyday.

dreadful, isn't it. that and the poisonous chemicals some of the big brand companies think it's okay to feed our pets.

he human food thread was probably the one I started. I have known people that all they ever fed to their dog was people food, and the dogs lived long, happy normal lives. Of course, the owners talked with their vets about what's ok and what's not. But, yes I see what you're saying; there are definately foods that are not ok to give to dogs no matter what.

WOW! I didn't know that at all but I've never given our dog Grapes or raisins. But it's nice to know not to for sure! About the only scrapes we give our dog is meat and it's a treat for her. BUT I did give our oldest cat a grape yesterday. Now I feel guilty!! Now I know better and won't do it again! Our oldest always wants what ever where eating and I don't mind giving him a bit of fruits and veggies. :( Bad GG!
