Don't worry, I'm not asking for any social security numbers in this discussion! Do you have your own social security number memorized? If not, why? Do you think it is important for each person to have that information memorized? Do you know any other social security numbers other than your own? If so, whose do you know and why do you know it? I believe it is fairly common for a spouse to know his or her spouse's social security number as well as parents knowing that of their children.

I know my SSN, my husband and my ex-husband. I don't have my sons ssn memorized. I know my husband has no clue what mine is, I am not even sure he knows his own ssn.

That's interesting that you still know your ex-husband's SSN. It's also a very good thing that you know your husband's SSN since he may not know it himself! (That made me chuckle. That's what wives are for, I suppose.) LOL It seems like when a person commits something to memory, it stays there permanently in some cases depending on how long you've known about it, so it makes sense that you would still remember your ex's. Sometimes I find myself bringing something to memory that I really wish I could forget!

I have mine memorized, as well as my husbands. I don't know my kids, but then I don't really need them except at tax time. I also have my driver's liscense memorized, along with my bank account numbers.

I know some people who are over 18 and don't even have their SSN memorized, which I think is dangerous. They always have to call their parents to find out. It's also dangerous to carry that information around when it's written on a piece of paper or something. I know I should have my DL number memorized, but I don't. I always have it with me, but the day I don't I'd probably need to have the number to write on some form or something! I used to have one of my bank account numbers memorized, but since I opened another account, I forgot all but the last four digits. I also don't have my credit card numbers and PINs memorized. I guess I should start studying! (LOL)

I know mine and my husbands. Being in the military at one point and time, you have to know it because that's how they tell each person apart. Then when I married my husband that's also in the military, so for me to do anything like doctor's appointments and such I had to use his social. Wish my husband would take the time to learn mine, ours are very similar to each other's it's not even funny.

It would be nice of him to learn mine, but first I need him to learn our home phone # first, lol. We been here almost 3 years in our new home and he still doesn't know it. Our social is only familar with the last four, our's is just different by 1 number. The other numbers are different because we are from different states. In the military, they only care about the member's social that's in the service. After I got out, it's like mine didn't matter anymore.

That's really neat to hear. I know that's really important for spouses of those in the military to know their social security numbers. I think your husband should take the time to memorize yours also especially since they're so similar! It's ironic that you mentioned that. I'm requiring my fiance to memorize mine before we get married. (LOL) Ours are exactly the same except for the last four numbers, which is great. I already have his memorized because they're only four numbers off. Of course, the more ironic thing is that the last four numbers of mine are actually the same as his, only in a different order! It's the weirdest thing...I just take it as another one of those signs that we're meant to be together! (LOL) Thanks for your input.

Yes, I have mine memorized as well as my husband's and 2 kids. Though with both of my kids I have a hard time remembering whose is whose! LOL I even get mixed up sometimes and switch some of their numbers! When I have to give this information out I'm okay at remembering which number belongs to which kid, but I am always second guessing myself. I should probably practice up on it so that I do not have to rely on looking at their cards.

It's funny you would have to practice something like that, but I agree. I should probably brush up on some of the numbers I've memorized (or haven't memorized) also. That must be hard differentiating between your kids' SSN's sometimes! Of course, that's what mothers are for! I have my boyfriend's memorized for no particular reason other than the fact that they are so close. It's very strange but really neat. I need to memorize my driver's license number as well as my bank account numbers. I don't know if I'd go so far as to memorize my credit card numbers and PIN's, but it might help when I don't have them! Thanks for sharing.

I agree! Memorizing names or something else that consists of all letters is one thing, but numbers are so easy to mix up! If you get one number in the wrong place, you've got the wrong person (SSN or DL) or the wrong bank account. (LOL)

I think it is good to have your ssn memorized,it saves you the trouble of having to grab your wallet everytime you need it.I have mine,my son's and my mother's memorized.Mine and my son's for obvious reasons, and my mother's because when she got into her automobile accident and I moved in to care for her, it was something I had to write regularly at her doc's appointments.

You probably noticed already, but I guess myLot has been having issues with responses posted duplicate times. It happened to me with another discussion I responded to and also another friend who responded to this discussion of mine. I just wanted you to know just in case myLot deletes one of your responses to this discussion. You may see your points go down too. I don't know how exactly it is that they take care of that, but I just wanted you to know! Thanks again for responding to this discussion. :)

I have my husbands and mine memorized. If I used them more I would have my kids memorized as well. The reason I know my husbands even better than my own is because he was military so they used it to identify him in the millions of peices of paperwork they had us sign.

Writing it down so often definitely would help you memorize your husband's better than your own. I can understand why that would be so. Have you ever accidentally written his down instead of yours because you know it so well? Just curious. That would be kind of funny!

Yes I've done that plenty of times. Especially since some of our numbers are similar. Occassionally I have to show him the paper work and make sure whther its mine our his that I wrote down.

In India, there is no such facility. Citizens are identified by their name counter checked with Voter's list/Food ration card/Permanent Account Number (PAN of income tax)/Insurance policy of a government company etc. When a proof of residence and identity is required, the authorities be it a private bank, mutual fund, insurance company or government agency, they ask for one of the above documentary evidence. There could be millions without any proper identity. It is difficult that if a mishap takes place, people die and it is difficult to identify the people unless someone close to that person identifies. The thoughts about system of introducing a number each citizen is in the offing.

That's very interesting how this issue is handled in India. Thank you for sharing. I think India does well to identify people by so many various personal identity items. It makes an identity more difficult to steal in some cases. I think each person having their own private number would be ideal, however. I hope that your country is soon able to use the number method in order to ensure the right person is identified in each case! Thanks for your most interesting response.

Yes, eveyone should have their SS# memorized. No one should be carrying their card around with them, it is too dangerous in the event it is lost or stolen.

You're definitely right. I don't trust myself to carry around important numbers on cards, except for my driver's license, of course. I'm usually a very organized person, but I still don't want to take any chances. Committing those types of things to memory is the best way to go. Thanks for your input, Howard!

Your welcome!! Anytime I write phone numbers, appointments etc down I remember them and I'm like "hm,I didn't even have to write that down",but if I don't write it down right away, pfft forget it....I would never remembera thing! That's very good of you to care for your mother. I know what you mean by always having to pull cards out of your purse with all that important information on them. I'd rather have it all memorized. I'd be afraid of dropping one and it getting into the wrong hands. I think it's very interesting how people remember things after writing them down so many times. They say that you actually remember things better when you write them down a lot...it's like your brain automatically locks onto it. Thank you for sharing!

I know I have things I'd much rather forget, but there they are still logged in my memory! Thanks for your response. It was fun to read. :)

Hi in the UK we have a National Insurance number which I should imagine is the equivelent of your Social security numbers. I know mine off by heart but I do carry my National Insurance card with me at all times anyway. I do not know anyone elses and do not feel it is my place to. I have a good memory for numbers anyway and years ago I worked for a stationery company and can still remember the product codes for the majority of items!. How sad is that? LOL Ellie :)

Thanks, Ellie! It's very interesting learning about personal identification numbers in various countries (other than the US, of course, since that's where I'm from and that's all boring to me - lol). You do have a very good memory to remember all of those product codes now several years later! I know there are many people (in addition to Wolfie and I) who wish they had your ability to recall information! Thanks for sharing, my friend.

I have mine and my husands memorized, but not my kids. If I need theirs I have to get them from the file cabinet. I should memorize them, because usually when I need them i'm not at home, but I figure they're teenagers now so in a few years it will be up to them to memorize them.

I definitely agree with you. Teenagers by the age of 16 should know their social security number. I think I learned mine by the time I was 18, if not earlier. Only a few months after I graduated high school and turned 18, I went to college a thousand miles from home. Obviously, I was really thankful I'd memorized mine!

I am hopeless remembering numbers! All I know is my SSN number or National Insurance as we call it in the UK is a mixture of numbers and letters the first starts with NW that's all I can remember! I can remember dates ok, but when it comes to numbers my memory is hopeless. I just about remember my pin number LOL. Mind you having said that it is very rare for me to use my SSN number or be asked for it, so there's no point in trying to remember it. Far more important numbers to remember like my mobile phone number LOL

You're so right. There are other numbers much more important that we have to write down more frequently than our personal number. Wow, I didn't even realize UK pin numbers have letters and numbers. That makes it a whole lot more tricky! I don't blame you for not memorizing yours. (LOL) I'm happy to hear you have your cell number memorized, though! Thank you for your detailed response. I agree with you that there are more important things to remember. :)

I know my own social insurance number which is the Canadian version of the United States Social Securtiy number, but not my husband's that much, but it is written down so that I can get at it, when we are doing our income tax. I think we should all know our own, but the only time we should know someone else's is if they have given us Power of Attorney in case they are too old or incapacitated to manage their own business affairs and of course, lawyers should know the social security or social insurance of their clients.

I've never even thought about having mine blocked from credit history! I have a couple credit cards, so that wouldn't be a bad idea at all. I know you have to have your ssn to get a credit report in the first place. That's a good move to prevent scams and fraud like you mentioned. Thanks for the excellent idea! How do you go about actually blocking your ssn from credit history? I should probably do the same. I don't want my important information floating around out there when it doesn't have to. Thanks again!

I agree that it makes more sense for you to have your ssn memorized before your own phone numbers. You probably use your ssn more even though it's still probably not that much. Of course, the only way you "use" your personal phone number is to give it to people. It's like you said, you don't call yourself. (LOL) Thank you for your great response.

I never thought of that. You're right. Personal ID (such as driver's license) is actually more popular and widely used because it has the person's picture on it. The social security number is much more specific since those simple nine numbers can hold a lot of information about a person...but, of course, not their appearance in the form of a picture! Thanks, Marketing.
