Do you make your hamburgers from scratch or do you buy them already

Made from the freezer section of the grocery store? I usually make them fresh, and use an egg plus bread crumbs as fillers. I find that even though they say on the package that the hamburger paddies are low fat, that there is still a lot of grease coming off of them, and they put too much salt and spices in them. Now I love spices but I am more into herbs, and the only flavorings besides that are pepper and a little salt free or not as much salt and I use lean round rather than hamburger meat. I am part English, and the way we had hamburgers was with brown beans or with mashed potatoes, not with a bun.

I have to convince my wife to make hamburgers from scratch, they,re far tastier than the bought ones. Unfortunately she is very busy, so mostly it's the frozen variety.

It's easy to make from scratch, and then you can freeze them and just take out what you like.

I have to disagree with you when you say they're just as good. Home made are much better in my opinion.

i've only made mine from scratch once, it takes too much time. the one's from a store are just as good and much more efficient.

I do not know what they put in them, but the ones you buy are greasy and they have this sort of orange fat.

I like mine made from scratch. I usually have ground beef in my freezer from the split quarter I buy from a farm near here. My husband makes the best burgers on the grill, and I finally got him to make them the way I like them best, which is a little crunchy on the outside, and pink on the inside. We use different spices or fillings for variety, like sometimes we have chopped up mushrooms or diced cheese mixed in with meat.

I sort of like mushroom burgers, but with the mushrooms on top as well as fried onions, and crisp bacon. Do not care for cheese inside though.

I like them made from scratch. I cannot stand the frozen patties because there's not as much flavor and they're a bit um...chunky. I don't want to bite into my hamburger and come away with a chunk that's hard to chew!

It's the spices they use that I cannot stand. I like a little salt, lots of pepper, oregano, and maybe some garlic powder.

OUr Foreman grill does not work, but it could be because of the plug going out. I will have to test it though.

Whenever possible I make my own and add cheese, fresh minced parsley, eggs, breadcrumbs and a few spices. I have a metal hamburger press (and a few plastic ones) that form nice nice burgers then I use square wax paper sheets to separate them and freeze them. Whenever we want burgers on the grill I'll pull them out the night before and let them thaw and then have great burgers the next day.

I did have some tupperware presses but not anymore. I love oregano so I use that instead of parsley and I do not use cheese unless I am making meatballs. I love meatballs and spaghetti. What kind of spices do you use? We use salt or no salt, pepper, and garlic powder.

I make them both ways; however, scratch are healthier with less fat. I don't serve hamburgers often any longer, but sure love to eat them.

When we have the store freezer burger, we have to pour off so much fat it is not funny. Home mades are better.

I rarely make hamburgers cause i dont have a bbq and i like my burgers on a grill! hehe But when i do i make them myself, i dont like teh taste of those crappy steakettes or whatever you call them. They dont taste like a real burger of any sort that i've ever had. I like to add bits of onions and bbq sauce in them, i've never done the egg thing but i think my mom used to do that. And when i worked in a donair place we used to use breadcrumbs as filler so that the cones would stick together without falling apart on the spit. mmm donairs. They do not really made them here, at least not the same way.

I always used bread crumbs. I hated eating the crusts. And we did need an egg to make it moist. It does work. I also heard that the onion soup mix does as well. So maybe I might make some tomorrow, rather than the sausage and potatoes that i was going to make.

We use our bbq in the summer, but not that often, so I usually pan fry them on the stove. I use breadcrumbs and eggs to make the meat stretch a little farther. I am a cheap skate.

I must admit to having taken the "lazy" way out a time or two long ago, for cook-outs and the like, but for years now I've done nothing but make my burgers from scratch. There have been too many recalls of the pre-made patties, for one thing, and as you said they're so full of fat and they don't really taste like beef at all I don't think! That's why I don't care for McDonald's hamburgers, you just can't taste the good beef flavor. Annie

I do not like the buns and the added stuff on McDonald's. I think they use beef, but it might not be the good kind, like it is not grade A.

I generally buy the hamburger and make it into patties. I have bought the frozen ones before but that was back when we were foster parents and I was rarely home enough to actually cook. **AT PEACE WITHIN** ~~STAND STRONG IN YOUR BELIEFS~~

We usually get the lean or extra lean ground beef and make the hamburgers from that and because I am cheap, I will add bread crumbs and an egg to make it go further, plus the salt and pepper and garlic powder. Sometimes I will add some mince onions, if I want some extra flavor and I might add worcestershire sauce or hp sauce.

They do turn out quite well. I just like to have a variety and sometimes I just put salt, pepper, and minced onions and garlic in them. And sometimes I make them into meatballs with oregano, fennel seed, etc. So it depends on what I use them for, but for straight hamburgers, since I do not usually like hamburgers with buns, that is the way I make them.

I sometimes make our hamburger patty from scratch - ground beef, spices, egg. My daughter prefer it than those we bought frozen from stores. I also like it that way because I know how the food was prepared.

I often make hamburgers from scratch. My son loves eating egg, brown beans, cucumber and cheese. So I always prepare hamburgers for him using bun, fried eggs, brown beans and cucumber plus chilli sauce. Sometimes I use only bread, smashed potatoes mixed with cheese and eggs and slices of cucumber topper with sprinkle of peanut and chilli sauce.

That sounds interesting, I mean hamburgers not in the sense of the buns and any fillings, but made with either ground beef, pork, turkey, veal, or chicken --the pattie itself, not as an ordinary sandwich.

We do not get much venison here. It is mostly the Native Canadians and the farmers who do hunting who have it, so the only time we had venison was when a friend of my husband went hunting and got some for us. I wonder how it tastes, mixed up with the ground beef. I heard of mixing pork and veal with ground beef to make meatballs. It must be good.

I add egg and bread crumbs to mine, but I think you have to press them hard and I heard you have to make the outside larger than the middle.

a cook friend was telling me something about wrapping the meat in plastic wrap first to knead it supposedly it mixes better.i suppose it's worth a try..it'd be less mess anyways;)

I've never made a hamburger from scratch. I'm from a big family (six kids), so my parents always bought hamburgers at the store either in the frozen patties or a frozen hamburger that included the bun. I know it may seem easier for a family like ours to do it that way, but I'd love to make our own hamburgers because we would know what's in it! That's the thing about going to all of those fast food places too. You never know what you're going to get! (LOL) The biggest reason I wish we made our own is because I'm allergic to milk and have other food allergies as well. I'd rather make my own than have to read a mile-long ingredients label, if you know what I mean! And the print on those things is so tiny like they don't want you to read it or something! (LOL) Just about everything has milk in it, so I've pretty much given up on staying away from it. Eating it won't kill me just because I have the allergy. It's just more annoying than anything else. Great discussion. I never even thought about making my own or what all goes into making burgers. Thanks for sharing!

I know about allergies, I am starting to get phelgm everytime I drink milk, -yogurt is the exception. I do not like fast food, because I feel that they are not that healthy. They are starting to become healthier and offering salads, and that, but they never did when I was at that hamburger eating stage and I saw so many people going in those places who were fat, that it made me not want to go there, but make my own. We go there once in a while, but I prefer to make my own and avoid getting all that fat in me.

I know exactly what you mean. I went through that "fast food burger" stage myself when I was in my teens. You would never know that I loved fast food by looking at me (LOL), but I try to stay away from greasy and unhealthy things as well. It's just better to cook at home and make things from scratch because you know exactly what's in it and don't have to worry about "hidden ingredients." My milk allergy is very annoying, but I have hope that it'll go away...that I'll grow out of it because I grew into it. They say it's entirely possible. I surely hope you're not developing food allergies either, although it's just a fact of life that no one person can completely and painlessly digest every single thing there is to eat. I wouldn't wish food allergies on anyone, but I love your cooking and eating habits. I'm sure you're saving yourself from gaining extra pounds and staying healthy at the same time! Great discussion and thanks for your input.

I beat that your ready maker burgers taste better over there than here in Canada. For some reason, the only way you can have a good burger is to make it yourself. Most people like their's on a bun but I like mine separate and with a side dish, usually potatoes or fries. Some time I will be trying them with sweet potatoes. We bought some last week and they were very good. Only my husband does not want to try them.
