I was just thinking about how one sided the portrayal of fat people are on tv, I notice the men can be fat, bald, cute or unattractive but they all have pretty young and slim wives, example the john balushi show, the king of queens, and so on, yet when the star is the woman and she is fat, if she has a husband he is fat too, or she is portrayed as a single mother, example rosanne and monique, why is it that hollywood does not seem to see that fat woman can have sexy husbands too, what is your opinion on this?

You are right. I think the reason is that characters from TV shows tend to be clichéd. We like to see characters that we can somehow identify with ourselves. We like plots that follow a certain pattern that should meet our expectations. Trust me, a movie where a fat lady is the queen of the prom, the muscular guy is a geek, a white guy can fight kung fu, and the lady driving on the convertible is poor. Pair that with a story line that there is no supreme ordeal, no happy ending, and a bunch of twists that lack logical explanation. This movie could not possibly be a hit, unless it was released as a comedy by Monty Python. Because nothing would make sense for the common public. Just like the black guy is a thief, a rapper, a rebel, or a sports player; our stereotypes are most often prejudicial. Follows that the fat lady IS unattractive and unwanted. Obviously, she was not successful neither, because one of the many qualities of the alpha female is being physically pretty. What makes it not true for males, is that what makes a successful male are different parameters. Guys are expected to be confident, independent, decisive, strong, adventurous, risk takers, lazy, loud, masculine, progressive, severe, reserved etc. Girls are expected to be shy, sensitive, weak, small, fussy, dependent, talkative, curious, attractive (!!!), charming, emotional, dreamy, etc. I dont know how those stereotypes arise or fall. Some say its the media fault, but I personally disagree. Do the media dictate our tastes, or our tastes dictates what is shown in the media? I think its the latter. If you check renaissance paintings you notice how the female model of beauty was a chubby girl. In some regions of Africa, a fat lady is regarded as better fed, therefore healthier, and attractive. I read in a book by Sigmund Freud (if I recall right), that our sense of gender attraction might be strongly related to our sense of health. Because, right now we see obesity as a disease it has a HUGE negative impact on our perceptions. Somehow, woman were more affected...

Actually, I hadn't noticed that. I don't watch much tv and so don't know the names of alot of the sitcoms but I have seen some where the wife was quite heavy and the husband was quite hot. Actually, hollywood is just hollywood and I don't really pay that close of attention to what it portrays....it is never "real life" anyway. I don't expect tv to portray real life so I guess I don't have an opinion really....its just occassional entertainment.

I smell prejudice! There's a definite stigma about being overweight, and some unwritten rule that says fat is undeserving of a sexy husband or boyfriend. My opinion is that fat women ought to have sexy men in their lives on the screen just to show that appearance isn't everything there is about a woman. Sexy man loves the woman even though she's heavy because she's got personality, charm and loving heart. As far as the real world goes, being fat really is a health issue.
