I did it for the first time yesterday, after our big boy got his forclaws into serious trouble. They were sticking into everything, and he almost tore em out. Too bad I didn't come away unskathed. He managed to dig his pre-clipped claws into both my arms. Took siix bandads to cover the damage.

I have always done my cats and dogs nails, I never thought about not doing it or getting someone to do it...I hope you are ok, It does get better over time he will get used to it.

I have tried to clip my dogs toe nails before and that didn't work out so well because he wants to get away and leave..he has never bitten or anything but he has whined..but i wouldn't ever attempt to cut the cats toe nails that i live with because i would probably wind up in the hospital with that cat..he is mean...

Yes, I think leather gloves and claw proof clothing would be in order if I tried to clip my cats claws. I have never done this, they seen to manage just fine keeping them in trim on the furniture, carpets and occasionally, me.

I find that the earlier (younger) you start clipping the nails and make it a habit of doing it every two or three weeks, then the pet is used to it and it is no problem. I have always trimmed my own dogs, cats and rabbits' nails. I have tried it with a full-grown cat that never had it done -- um, next time it had it done at the vet's while anesthetized, thank you. Most vets will trim them for about $10; or if you happen to be at the vets' for some other thing, they might throw it in for free while the pet happens to already be there . . . if you ask them.

Yeah, he had them done when he was there. Thing is: 1) He was an abused kitty. Not sure how bad, but when my sister got him he had been thrown out of a car window while the car was on the move. No idea what else was done to him, but he was terrified when we first got him. 2) His nails grow fast. Even though the vet did clip them last time we were there, they grew to the point they were a safety hazard for him. We've seen him hanging by a nail before because it got caught when he jumped, and we always figure he'll tear one of them out. (He's a BIG cat.) 3) He's TERRIFIED of car rids. Most likely due to issue one. He cries and cries when we have to take him. And we have to crate him or he goes BERSERK! So taking him to the vet when not needed isn't really an option for him. He's not good in cars at all.

I think his issue is he's just jumpy. I suspect that if we tired that he wouldn't like it. He's getting better about not freaking out at everything, but it's hard to judge how he'd react to anything as it's not known how he was abused. I ended up with him in a pillow case, with one paw and his head out, and he seemed fine with that.
