JK Rowling feels Betrayed

As the creator of the Harry Potter books sees it, her kindness to fans might come back to haunt her. In papers filed for a lawsuit in Manhattan, J.K. Rowling says she feels betrayed by a fan, Steven Vander Ark, for his role in trying to publish an unauthorized reference work, "Harry Potter Lexicon."Rowling said she was especially irked that the site's owner and the lexicon's would-be publisher, RDR Books, continued to insist that her acceptance of free, fan-based Web sites justified the efforts. What do you think?

I think she has a good leg to stand on as far as the suit, but then again, I am not an attorney. But, I really wonder if it was just a fan site, why was she so offended?

It's her hard work, effort, and creation. Not to mention her property, to which she owns all the rights. Why should someone else make a profit off of the work she's done? How would you feel if you put all the time and effort into creating something, only to have someone else make money from it with very little effort on their own part. How much money she's made makes NO difference.

she has the right to be angry like that, Harry Potter is her property basically, copyrighted to her and the company she published through and without her permission someone tries to get money off of her work. I'd be angry and betrayed as well if it was something i wrote.

Harry was her idea, she owns it, she has the right to stop the author of the book. As for the internet sites, it is easier for her to accept them, since they are so numerous and I am sure the monetary returns are much less then a book. People on the internet exchange ideas and have fun, there is no interchange of ideas in a hard print book.

I wish I had her problems! She is the New Shakespeare of the 21st and 22 centuries! She has already made a Great Contribution to Child Education to say nothing of the illiterates who learned to read her books! Why does she care? How many Millions does a once penniless woman need?

What does money have to do with it? If you were to work hard for something, wouldn't you be upset if someone else was trying to make money off of YOUR hard work?

Fan sites are a completely different ball game. Just because she isn't one of those authors going on "witch hunts" shutting down sites left and right, doesn't give someone the right to use her work for a profit. If she sold him the rights, or gave him permission that is one thing. But for someone to say that she allowed fan sites to operate so she is obligated to let this guy make money off of her work, that is another story!

I really think they should respect the author's feelings. She shouldn't be left out of the loop.

I think it's awful that a "fan" would try to publish a book based on her stories. It's one thing to write for a fan site, for free, twists that you think of or alternative story lines. I've read a fair number of stories created by fans, and some are great stories & very creative. But the authors aren't trying to make money off of someone else's work. In a technical sense, those stories too are infringing on the copyright but JK seems a reasonable person & I would assume she's flattered & happy she has so many fans. But just because she doesn't try to stop those sites, doesn't mean she has to allow someone to publish something that steals pieces of her work.

I read that in the papers too. But the thing is the report gave precious few details and from what I read, I find Rowling to be in the wrong. I don't see what is wrong if a fan want to publish a lexicon for fans. This will help the harry potter fan community at large, no? I suspect that she is mad because he either did not offer to pay her the profits to be or they have talked about it but discussions broke down. But like I said, I know very little about the real state of affairs and it is just my silly speculation here.:P

I know there are a number of fan sites that publish unauthorised stories, and Rowling has done nothing to stop them. I think I read somewhere that Rowling or RDR were going to write a Lexicon or factual book to explain the myths or details of the novels, therefore guess they don't want to lose out on revenue to a rival lexicon
