I have just finished a book titled "The Name of the Wind" by Patrick Rothfuss. For those into the fantasy genre, this is one of the best books I have read - an absolute page turner - so you may consider checking it out. The book takes the form of a man narrating his life story. Though he is only 20+, he is already known as a notorious magician, accomplished thief, masterful magician and infamous assassin. Related website: www.nameofthewind.com But of course, that is just a story. Just fiction and is unreal in this supposedly real world. The protagonist in the story, Kvothe, was searching for the name of the wind so that he can command it. There are schools of thoughts floating around that believe each person or thing has a name - not just superficial names like lordwarwizard or Jerry Maguire but innate, secret and binding names that grant power to the one who knows how to use them. Imagine there is a typhoon right now and I know the real name of the wind. I can just say, "Wind, be still!" and the natural disaster that might have killed thousands will be gone in an instant. Imagine, if wind was yours to command, what would you do? And not only wind, If fire was yours to command... If water was yours to command... If earth was yours to command... If time was yours to command... Etc. Let's put on our brightest hats and toss our imagination around. Choose an element (you can do more if you are greedy :P) and imagine you can command it - what would you do for yourself and/or the world?

If time was mine to command, I would ask it to slow down a bit. This way I could get everything done that I need to. I could enjoy the company of friends and family a bit longer. I could spend more time with my children and husband also.

It could possibly be more complicated than that. By slowing down, what do you mean? Slow down time for you? For just your friends and you only? For your area? And does the time move naturally elsewhere? Or everything gets slowed together, etc. So many complications lol!

Oh no, I would slow down time for everyone and everything. What is the point of having command if not to use it to its full potential?

If water was mine to command, I'll run a carwash business and wash hundreds of cars at the same time with minimal effort.

Well, I thought about running a business producing mineral water but that would mean I would have to be selective about the water I'd be using. With the carwash thing, I thought I could just get water from a large natural source (the Pacific Ocean, perhaps), send it to a treatment facility (that's outside of my "powers," I could only command water), and just blast those cars squeaky clean with the water. Or I could offer my services to those countries who couldn't afford a dam and charge them a little less than what it would take them to construct such a structure and use my powers to control their waters. Or I could offer an artificial rain service to regions where drought is a problem and charge them just a bit for praying to the Rain King (that's me). Or I could probably set up an emergency hotline (kind of like the Bat signal) where people can call me if they're about to experience a flash flood, a killer tsunami, or a fatal tidal wave, and I can just charge their governments later for saving their precious lands.

The only hing I would use fire for would be to keep warm and cook. We have a song here that names rain fire and wind. The rain is Tess the fires Joe and we call the wind MAria pronounced like this Ma -rye -a. I would like control of water . for all things need water to survive. I would make it rain around evenly to all places that need it but not enough for flood. and Water can put out fire. The wind a differnt story . WInd is free untameable but I would like to throw a rope on a tornado and calm it down so it doesnt distroy things and people!

For myself - I think I would command fire to cook the nearest cow to medium rare. A combination of a tornado through a vegetable patch combined with water and fire should get me some nice potatoes and carrots on the side... I'm not sure about the gravy... this could get complicated ... needs more thought... Man, I'm hungry now!

I guess I must have answered your question at lunchtime.... I thought about the gravy thing, maybe if the cow ate a lot of onions before the fire hit.... OK, maybe I spend a lot of time thinking about food. I like food a lot, and I'm one of those lucky swines who can eat what they like without putting any weight on...

I am not really sure if I would like to have all those things in my command lordy. I wonder if it would be a blessing or a disaster and even dangerous. I know nature can be really destructive some times, but maybe it's the way it's supposed to be? Now as a story I find this interesting and even something that I will enjoy reading. I will check the link you give after answering.

I'd like to control the weather for starters,I'd like the Sun to be up everyday ,the temperature to be at a steady 20 degrees Celsius, light wind, and a beautiful scent in the air.I would purify the environment,so that means no more polution, or other problems.Actually I'll learn some of the stuff I mentioned at the University :)

Purifying the place is cool but as for fixing the weather, geez, if others don't like this weather arrangement, would you take their opinions into account?

Right, that's another thing. You don't know what people's reaction would be to your power (when they don't have it).

I could arrange some elections to see what type of weather the people want in my country, but it's best that they don't know that I have that kind of power,so my way it is.

Wow, Sounds like a awesome book that is right up my alley of reading. Have to check it out. I'm not sure I would want to command fire. I would possibly burn myself as accident prone I am sometimes. It would be great use though not just for protection but light, warmth and cooking. I think I would like to command time. Maybe bounce into the future get a few lotto numbers and use them to make some money. Or to help others go back and redo something to help them erase their mistakes even and undo wrongs. Or command water so that there wouldn't be droughts, so people and animals wouldn't die because of it everyone needs water, it would be a commodity that people wouldn't be able to go without. Be cool to power up a pool of water when I needed or wanted it also. Who's up for a swim?..

Now my mind is buzzing wanting to read this great book. I can't wait till I get to read it me and my brother will probably be fighting over it. He also loves books like this. He is the one who got me started on them. I ran out of romance books and he offered me a few of his books and I was hooked from then on and that was 6 years ago.

It is awesome, do check it out. He is a new author - this is his first book and it was published just last year. I can't wait for his book 2 and 3. And indeed, being able to command fire, or even just any element, is a big protection. No baby bunglers have hope of robbing you.

Believe it or it... this is a real life example. It could be coincidence, it could be just skeptics attracting proofs. A group of primary school students was getting ready for an excursion to the Botanic Gardens. 15 minutes before the bus came, the rain came, followed by thunder. The teacher-in-charge start praying... and to the wonders of many pairs of eyes, the sky cleared and the group was on their way to the Botanic Gardens. Whatever is mine to command, I wish to have the power to be able to command my wish, just like the teacher-in-charge. If I need the rain, the rain comes. If I need the wind, the wind will come. If I need the sun, the sun will shine brightly. If I need fire, fire will glow. If.... if only my wish is my command.

A very interesting topic/challenge, I will try to make my brain work on this one. If I were water, I would make myself free from pollution and plentiful for everyone's needs. I would have to preserve the ecological balance because rain forests and deserts do serve a purpose in balancing nature. I would want everyone to have enough water for their needs without worrying about quality. I would have to control flooding yet make sure there is enough water for necessities and natural hydration. But I do have to point out that control is not always good. No matter how good you are something will always be out of balance. I don't think you can achieve perfection, but maybe it is possible to reduce the amount of suffering. Even good intentions have to deal with the physical laws of the universe in that each and every action produces an equal and opposite reaction. So doing good for one may cause harm elsewhere.

I think if water was mine to command, I would try to make more fresh water available to third world countries who do not have fresh water to drink. If the earth was mine to command, I would get rid of all the inhabitants who cause havoc and disturbance to peace. I would make sure the earth rotated in peace and I would rid any group who threatened the peace. I would also make sure all inhabitants of earth would not go to bed hungry or underfed. If time was mine to command, I would switch my time back so I may be able to right some wrongs I may have caused. I would also turn time forward into the future to see what is about to happen in the future, then turn it to present time to avoid the situation from happening. -Feel Free to Disagree!
